Top Critic Rated Films In Wide Release for 2005

The thing that I love about Rotten Tomatoes is that it's just the best site on the net to get your pure reviews of films. I'm not that thrilled with anything else they do... but they do this better than any other site. You don't just get one Critics opinion... you get dozens and dozens of them... and then Rotten Tomatoes averages them out. To me, this is far more objective than just getting the thoughts of 1 or 2 critics (even if it's me).

With that in mind, the sute put up their 2005 top rated films list. This particular list is only for films that had wide release in 2005 (so Capote and Good Night and Good Luck arent' on there). Still, I found the results to be really interesting. Take a look at the top 10:

1. Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit 95%
2. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire 89%
3. Batman Begins 83%
4. King Kong 83%
5. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory 83%
6. Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith 82%
7. The 40 Year-Old Virgin 84%
8. Cinderella Man 83%
9. Tim Burton's Corpse Bride 83%
10. Walk the Line 82%
I won't go into the scoring system (because as you can see #7 has a higher rating than #6, but trust me... the scoring works out). Hmmm... more critics liked Revenge of the Sith than Walk the Line... sweet sweet justification!

Now seriously folks... this list doesn't really mean anything... but as a wide scope look at what the top 100 critics thought I found the result to be pretty damn interesting. You can take a look at the whole list here.

Metacritic.com is far better, imo. Not as many reviewers, but the "right" ones. They also know a thing or two about presenting statistics. Statistics are sexy!

I am glad Serenity made the list. I m just finishing off the last few episodes of the Firefly series loaned to me by Morbius and I raise my hands up, I have been converted. It's a shame we will no longer be treated to a gem that was Serenity.

Sith at sixth? Not bad at all. (Pun intended)

Yeah -- Rotten Tomatoes doesn't really hold up for me in comparison to Metacritic.com. Their coverage isn't neccesarily as wide as Rotten Tomatoes in terms of numbers of critics they factor, but they factor in all of the more "important" critics as well as limited released movies, which is an excellent bonus.

Metacritic's Top 10 reviewed:

1. The Best of Youth
2. Capote
3. Nobody Knows
4. Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit
5. Brokeback Mountain
6. Murderball
7. Grizzly Man
8. Turtles Can Fly
9. Kings and Queen
10. Cache (Hidden)

What do they see at Wallace and Gromit? I don´t think it´s so great, is it?

Peter, I despair sometimes too. But what can we do eh?

Saying that, I do love Wallace and Gromit.
