James Cromwell Joins Spider-Man 3

James CromwellActor James Cromwell has joined the cast of Spider-Man 3. Cromwell is set to play Captain Stacy, who is Gwen Stacy's police office father (at least in the comics). As we mentioned a couple of weeks ago the role of Gwen Stacy has been filled with "The Village" star Bryce Dallas Howard.

I know this sounds lame, but I've been a big James Cromwell fan ever since I saw him in the original Babe back in 1995... and lets not forget all his stellar work in the Star Trek and Revenge of the Nerds franchises (hehe). But seriously, I find him to be a terrific actor who brings a real separate dimension with him to just about any project he's attached to. The good folks over at CHUD give us the following:

Last week Rich Johnston’s semi-reliable comics gossip column Lying in the Gutters revealed that Theresa Russell was playing the Black Cat in the movie, before changing his tune to say that she is playing the mother of the Black Cat. Somehow this led to speculation that Gwen Stacy, being played by Bryce Dallas Howard, would be the Cat. It seems unlikely, but possible, I guess - Russell could be Captain Stacy’s ex, now getting it on with Sandman. It sounds overly complicated.
Yikes! Well, I'm not going to worry at the moment about what Captain Stacy will be doing in Spider-Man 3... it's just nice to see Cromwell in the film.

Well, this is *wonderful*news. Great casting.

The weeks starts off great--will this make it two weeks in a row where nothing but good news comes out of Hollywood?

And, whether it is 'Babe', "Star Trek First Contact", "Green Mile" or "LA Confidential", James Cromwell is one of the best character actors around. No, nobody thinks you're off the mark with 'Babe', John. "That'll do".

Now, as for this nonsense with Russell being the Cat then the mother of Black Cat which makes Gwen the Black Cat...I don't think there is a law that says Gwen (in the film version) might be a half-sister to Felica Hardy; I don't think it's a good idea, and I'm sure it's false info that Sam is cracking up over to throw folks a slight detour.

But it makes sense that if Gwen was killed off in the Comics by Goblin [movie villian one] (or accidently by Spidey if you debate it) and her father (comics) was killed during a battle between Spidey and Doc Ock [*2*] then both could live to be in Spidey 3. This was where Sam Raimi said he would stray away from the source material earlier on before casting commenced. It could go a step further with Venom, but in all honesty, I don't **see** much more liberties than that.

Besides, with possible inculsion of Black Cat, screen time is already chewed up by Church's Sandman, followed by a "would be" Venom, and *maybe* the appearance of Harry's Goblin.

No, folks. It's a smokescreen.
There is no Black Cat. There is no mother of Black Cat.
Just like there was no Chamelon or Electro.
