Audio Edition - January 4th 2006

Welcome to the LONGEST Audio Edition in History! Over 50 minutes! Today Doug, Darren and I discuss Oscar hopful actors being negitivly effected by bad films they put out in the same year, our most anticipated films of 2006, the buzz about the upcoming He-Man film, Overrated films of 2005, we spend WAY TOO MUCH TIME talking about the Tom Hanks in Star Trek whispers and finally the upcoming horror flick Hostel. All this and a whole lot more.

PLEASE TAKE A MINUTE AND LET US KNOW WHAT YOU THINK OF THE LENGTH OF THIS AUDIO EDITION. WAS IT PAINFULLY TOO LONG? OR DID YOU LIKE IT?

As I understand it, it's not so much about length as it is about width.

I don't mind the longer audio editions. But for practical sake, keep it at one, 50er per week. I'm on dial-up. Other than that, it's cool.

Hey guys, haven't listened yet, but dammit, good job. If you've got material to cover the time, talk all you want.

Do you know what I mean?

That Casanova trailer includes my most hated Hollywood cliché. You all know it - the masked figure comes in, kicks twenty kinds of ass with super kung-fu skills, then pulls the mask off and the long hair cascades down and GOOD GRAVY IT'S A CHICK!!!

This ceased to be a surprise shortly after the Pink Panther movie back in like 1970. Yet still! Every damn time the masked tough "guy" takes off the mask, boom, the long hair comes down et cetera. IT'S A CHICK!

What kind of halfwit audience is still fooled? What kind of halfwit director still thinks it's clever? In short, WTF?

When they did it in The Brothers Grimm and I threw popcorn at the screen.

And in general I despise these films where modern attitudes are plunked down in a historical setting like that. 17th century Venice precedes grrl power. Go ahead, look it up!

And Heath Ledger is a charisma vacuum.

There, I'm done.

Great Audio Edition - Doug was on fire!!!! i was enjoying the daily edition when that was around - but 50 minutes of you guys talking movies & dicking around... totally fuckin awesome!

i've read comment in the past complaining you don't talk enough about movies, or do enough reviews in the audio edition - bullshit! the audio edition is great, always has been, keep it up!

Hey could anyone please tell me what the top 10 lists they gave for the last audio audition where?

In it, did they announce the winners of reader's choice?

Thanks a lot.

(Not all of the last audtio edition worked for me)

imagine if they had Bryan Singer directing, and Tom Hanks co-starring in Star Trek XI with the Next Generation crew! It should be the biggest Star Trek hit ever, I smell a 200+ million dollar hit! This should revive Star Trek on TV, and reintroduce a whole new generation to ST. The most important thing is Bryan Singer. I hope they make the next ST movie involve more of the crew not just Picard, Ryker, and Data. I'm sick and tired about Data and his story. They've spent too much time on him already. And, I hope they don't do anymore android/DATA humor.

If you have the material for a 50-minute show, go for it. I don't think there should be a minimum or maximum length for each show...it revolves around the news, so just vary it depending on how much news there is.

Oh, and that Kevin Costner western was Open Range. It wasn't great, but it was so-so. Certainly the first serious western to come out in a long time, which is kinda sad. I don't understand why Hollywood doesn't do any more westerns, unless they're afraid of getting 3-hour ones like the epic Sergei Leone spaghetti westerns.

Have to say that you all seem to be blaming the failure of sci-fi TV series firmly on the doorstep of the shows...there's plenty of blame to lie at the doorsteps of the studios and channels who throw them around their schedule and discourage viewiers, don't market them anywhere near enough (even on their own channels), and purely rely on dated demographic figures for ratings.

Just a small mention....I liked Hidalgo!!! :)
but I'm a horse person and it was based on a true story....
Aside from that, I think that the show was great! I actually got it downloaded, blah dialup!!!!
Doug was hilarious as usual :)

I haven't listened yet but after I listen to every audio edition I always fell like I wish it was longer. I think it's great that you guys have made it longer. I listen to it at work and it helps to pass the time. Thanks a lot.

I've never liked your time constraints so let me say yes, longer is better. If people don't like it, they can stop listening. However the majority of the people listening, I'm sure, are fans.

Doug was fantastic on this episode. A little hyper is good.

In the end you mentioned having Darren on for more. My favorite Audio Editions are the roud-table discussions and I think, if possible, you should have him on more. Three people discussing isn't too large either. It's perfect, and I think brings a lot of humor and insight into the show.

On the topic of the He-Man movie. It has apparently been shut down in the rumormill. But one thing I do wonder is if the Transformers movie does well, are we going to see a resurgence of nostalgia movies from Hollwood having to do with the 80's children. I mean, these are the people who are going to the movies now, so why wouldn't you capitalize on it if people are going to see it. I mean, even though Dukes of Hazzard was utter and complete crap, it still made serious bank. So I just wonder if Transformers tests the waters and does well, then are we going to see things like He-Man, Skyhawks, stuff like that in movies in the coming years? We had a resurrection of the 70's shows recently, so I would think that 80's cartoons wouldn't be that far off. And if done well, then Transformers could completely explode the marketing for these things. Me personally, I am waiting for the A-Team movie still after Miami Vice does well. Just a thought.

I say talk for as long as you guys want. Make out your list of topics, and crack on! If it takes an hour to cover everything, then let the fucker run for an hour. Down with these time constraints!

1)I thought Hildago was really good too. Wished more people had seen it.

I also loved Open Range, but I'd rag a little on Costner for interfering on his former pal Kevin Renyolds twice- once on Robin Hood Prince Of Thieves, then on Waterworld. Upside of Anger was Costner's best work since No Way Out.

2)Now, I do think Star Trek had gotten some new fans. But with the rise of Farscape, Stargate SG1 and now Battlestar, there simply were more new stuff to see and watch. When Trek is the only house on the block, that's one thing. When sci fi fans look for something new, fresh or something like the rekindling of Galactica, well there you go. Even Firefly, who the network shoved around and nearly killed, turned into a fairly decent sci-fi flm Serenity, which sadly, no one went to see, but with the DVD making money hand over fist...I could see a new revival of the series as DVD/TV movies. Point is, fans will sample other shows if they can find them. This will take away from Trek. Not a bad thing overall.

I also think, as many others do, that as far as Trek goes, Brannon Braga and Ron Moore had run the ship to the ground. When Manny Coto took over the sinking Enterprise, it was great. But the Hail Mary, if you will, wasn't enough to save it. Is it any coincidence that the final crappy Enterprise ep was not in the hands of Coto or Fred Dekker?

I would like to see one more TNG (with Q), and then hand the baton to a New Crew, one made for the movies. Cast familiar genre faces (Lance Henriksen, Bruce Campbell, Bill Paxton, etc) in lead or supporting roles. Bring back Michelle Forbes as Ro. Expand the ST universe, don't constrict to a past timeline.

3)I don't think an actor being in a film that doesn't get as much critical notice negates an exceptional performance in a better film. Shit all over Aeon Flux if you must, it isn't going to make me forget Charlize Theron in North Country. Same goes for Heath in 'Casanova' and 'Brokeback'. However, there's something slightly alarming, John. You hadn't seen 'Casanova' but you go on and on about it...and not every critic hates the film. Not that it matters, John. "Brokeback' will be the film pushed for Ledger.

Now, one more thing. You guys wasted a lot of podcast time ranting and ranting. If you got to the point you could have come in at 45 minutes.

I have just had the best hour of my week!!!!

-You don't have to always make it long, but when you have a crapload of topics to cover and you can fill the time well (which you did) I say go ahead and do it.

John, I can live with the length of this audio edition, if only the first hour of Kong was this much fun! ;-)

Posted by: Simone at January 5, 2006 08:16 PM

My first listen to the audio edition and I liked it a lot. Not concerned about the length at all, if you guys can keep talking for that long I will keep listening :p .
