De Niro returns to hard man role

RobertDeNiro.jpgI never cared much for Robert De Niro in comedy, I don't know what it was but he just didn't fit well for me. Then there's the whole "is De Niro overrated" bit, and I'm not sure about that, sometimes he most definitely is and sometimes I'm on the fence. However things might change my mind as the news comes that he's returning to a Mafia role.

From Variety through Coming Soon:

Robert De Niro is attached to star in the adaptation of Don Winslow's yet-to-be-published The Winter of Frankie Machine, reports Variety...De Niro would play a Mafia hit man who has given up the game to become the proprietor of a bait shop. When he finds out that he's been targeted for a hit, he gets back in the business. No writer is yet aboard to adapt the book, which is expected to hit stores in 2006 from Knopf.

Sounds like a similar story to one we've seen before, but I genuinely am interested in De Niro again for this. It'll be a good role to see him in, perhaps he'll get to be a little angry and unhinged too.

I thought "The King Of Comedy" was great. De Niro is my favourite actor of all time. Overrated? Hell no. Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, The Godfather Part II, The Deer Hunter...

Yes, he's made a few turkeys to fund a few new restaurants, but the man is a legend. One of the greatest actors ever

All his older movies...there's nothing of note in his later career.

Within the past 5 years, "15 Minutes", "The Score" and "Men of Honour" would all be considered as good movies, and good performances by De Niro. He has made some bad movies on auto-pilot, but to say he's overrated though is excessive.

OF COURSE he is over-rated!!!!

Is he bad? No; but I hate it when he is constantly mentioned by so many to be one of the greatest (if not THE) greatest actor of all time. That is such crap, and this post proves it. All he plays well are mafia roles. His comedy is laughable; and I mean that in the worst possible way.

"Taxi Driver" was interesting, but also pretty damn boring til the very end. I'll give him "Raging Bull" and "Deer Hunter," but other than that, nothing really great. And again, his comedy is SOOOOO bad!

And to the guy above me who says that "15 Minutes," "The Score," and "Men of Honor" are good movies...well, I'd hate to see what you consider a bad movie.

"Good" movies? Well good to be classed with the many other good movies we see ranging from a 5 to a 7 out of 10, but nowhere near the class people suggest.

I'm with you Drewbacca.

well, anyone who is to be mentioned as possible "greatest" would be instantly considered overrated.
