Audio Edition - October 3rd 2005

Time for your daily dose of Audio Edition Goodness. Today, due to technical difficulties I'm flying solo. Yes that's right... the very first Audio Edition in history that Doug Nagy is not a part of. Today I cover topic such as the idea being floated by Microsoft of a Single Play Dvd (how stupid), the format wars being waged between the Blue-Ray and HD-DVD camps (how stupid); Kevin Smith getting dropped from the new Fletch film (also stupid) and the rumours going around of the exitance of an early X-Men 3 teaser trailer. All this and a few things more. So download this installment of The Audio Edition here To subscribe to the podcast of The Audio Edition on iTunes copy this link and then paste it into iTunes-Advanced-Subscribe to Podcast. SHOW NOTES: Running Time: 23:20 File Size 5.3 megs

HD-DVD is backwards compatible. Looking around the net, some people seem to be under the impression that blu-ray is not, but according to this web-site it is:

http://www.blu-ray.com/faq/#2.4

As the site mentions, backwards compatibility is way too popular for either format to not feature it.

Technically blu-ray is the better format (single-layered it can store 25GB vs HD-DVD's 15GB, for dual-layered discs it's 50GB versus 30GB). HD-DVD isn't a big enough step forward; all it has going for it is the name. Thankfully, I think Sony will win out this time. Why? The Playstation 3 features blu-ray discs. Many people got PS2s just to play DVDs. Many people will buy PS3s just to play games and then, hey look, they've already got blu-ray playing compatibility.

One potential problem may be whether or not we're ready for a new DVD format. Obviously movie-philes like us will be excited about high definition DVDs, but I wonder just how excite the average consumer will be.

I think the high definition DVDs could take (and we really need them too, since HD-TVs are becoming more common) if 1) there's a unified format or a single format wins out early on and 2) companies emphasis the backwards-compatibility of the new players. If you tell consumers this can play a DVD or an even better blu-ray/HD-DVD disc, I think they'll eventually be willing to buy it.

Do you guys still do reviews??

Posted by: Ray` at October 3, 2005 10:12 PM

Hey there Ray,

Yes we do. Just 2 shows ago (on September 29th) we reviewed FlightPlan and Corpse Bride.

We usually do our "review" shows on Sunday nights... but the last 2 weeks have had schedule problems... but yeah... normally we'll have our reviews on Sunday nights.

Cheers.

Good!!.. but I wanna hear you opinions on Serenity, A History of Violence, and Into the Blue(which I hoped sucked).. you should do a show for just these reviews :)

Disposable DVD's just sound stupid, I can't even comprehend what would make them think this was a good idea,If I were of any authority in microsoft I would fire everyone who even thought this was an alright idea.. let alone a good one.

Hey, John...

When can we expect the next Video Edition?

Is there a pair of movies your waiting to review via Video?

NOTHING IS BACKWARD COMPATIBLE! Stay with me: Even common DVD-lasers cannot play ordinary CDs. CD, DVD, DVD-HD and Blu-Ray all have individual individual lasers. A regular DVD player has two, one for DVD and one for CD. The ultimate player would have four lasers, one for each format. Samsung has announced that they are working on just that.

Just my two cents.
