Cronenberg drops Painkillers

Weird manTo be honest I'm not really interested in the rest of the article from Coming Soon, but I am particularly interested in this quote:

Meanwhile, Cronenberg revealed that he has abandoned sci-fi thriller Painkillers, his original screenplay. He said, "One finds one doesn't like it five years later. It feels like it's from another era." The film would have focused on a police detective who is sent undercover to save humanity in a future where surgery is the new sex and pain the new forbidden pleasure.

The film certainly sounded really intriguing, and followed in the same vein as some of his recent movies. I don't particularly think some of his movies are fantastic, but they are exceedingly original and make your emotions and senses do something both in the cinema and afterwards, his movies affect you, and I really like that. This looked set to be another one of those movies.

However, the plastic surgery debate does seem like it's passed, and perhaps he's right, perhaps it would have been a dated movie at the time of its release. Would you have preferred he made it?
