Audio Edition - September 26th 2005

Your daily dose of Movie Blog Audio Goodness!

Today Doug and I tackle just one issue. The upcoming Halo Movie and a list of reasons why we feel the movie is destined for a long stay in suckville.

Now before downloading the show, let me preface it by stating I love video games and I really really really hope I'm wrong. I hope Halo The Movie turns out fantastic... and I'll come on here and be the first to admit I was wrong if that's how it turns out... but it won't. It will be terrible and the show explains why.

So download this installment of The Audio Edition here... then by all means please leave your comments and tell me why you agree with me... or PLEASE tell me why you disagree with me and change my mind (honestly folks... I really do want my mind changed).

I like that Bungie is keeping creative control.

I want to see Halo, not some director's vision of the Halo universe. I don't want a love interest included, I don't want to see any characters have any emotional development.

I think Bungie understands this. They know who their audience is, it's me, and i want to see things explode. And i want aliens to get chopped to bits with energy swords.

We have all seen what happens when a movie studio get it's hands on a license, they bastardize it to make it fit into the hollywood movie mold. Look at any video game movie ever made, some writer or director or studio always thinks they can improve on the original concept by changing things, and it never works.

And the reason it never works, is because the concepts and world of the game are very much ingrained in us from hours spent playing it, and that is what we want on the screen, not some liberal art fag's vision of a game's story and how he can improve it, we want the game, only bigger and prettier and cooler. With energy swords.

I think you are putting these movie makers on a pedestal. Fuck 'em, they are just people. What one man can do so can another.

I think this movie is going to be great. Why do I think that? Because they are making the movie for me, and they know what i want to see. Master chief, looking cool, kicking ass. Hopefully with hilarious dialogue.

John, I think you're misinterpreting what Bungie means when they say they are keen on keeping creative control. I don't think they're going to try to order around a big name director, otherwise, what would be the point of hiring one? All they want to do is prevent another Resident Evil situation where a director and screenwriter take the game's characters and pen a completely new story. They want to make sure the movie has continuity and stays within the established world of Halo, and that's a good thing. I think (unlike you) it shows that they do care about more than just making money, that they want to do their creative property justice.

Also I think Bungie deserves more credit than you're giving them. They do have the talent to come up with a decent story concept and to oversee production on a big budget movie. They have writers who have come up with the background for the game and written dialogue. (I'm not saying they are screenwriters... that's why they hired Alex Garland.) They also have artists and animators who have directed animated cut-scenes and developed all of the concept artwork. When it comes to CG effects for the movie, these guys are going to have a huge range of knowledge to draw from. They will be a valuable resource, not a pain in the ass for the director.

That said, I do agree that there's no way in hell Peter Jackson specifically would be interested in this movie. They will need to convince a director that there is a story worth telling here. Is there one? I'm not sure. Don't get me wrong, this movie still has a LARGE probability of suckage. I just think it's a lower probability of suckage than any video game movies we've seen so far.

Because Bungie and Microsoft are not selling out to Hollywood gives this movie hope. That way you don't get some jackass director screwing with the story and screenplay. Plus, and this could be BS, if you read Bungie's weekly updates at www.bungie.net, they are saying the short list of interested directors is a whos-who among Hollywod. I'd go for anyone except George Lucas and Paul W.S. Anderson.
