Around The Web - Friday September 30th

Around the Web is a daily feature where we highlight some of the days movie related stories from across the internet that we think you may find interesting. If you come across something that you think we should share with the rest of the world, please contact John with the link.

  • Wrecking Crew - "based on his story as a former drummer of the rock band ‘Bad Religion’. The memoir details his after-fame experience playing on an amateur baseball team made up of what he describes as members of “the Hollywood underclass”. While the team of castoffs and has-beens finds success on the baseball field, off the field they struggle with their own battered, damaged lives" This sounds like a great idea fora movie to me
  • Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz in a new romantic comedy called 'Holiday'
  • I know What You Did Last Summer 3 and xXx 3 coming stright to DVD
  • NYTimes say Serenity is better than Star Wars
  • Albert Brooks new film "Looking for Comedy in the Muslim World" - In "Looking for Comedy in the Muslim World," he plays a comedian sent by the State Department to India and Pakistan with a couple of minders to find out what makes Muslims laugh, so everyone can get along better in the post-9/11 world. I think this is a killer idea for a film!
  • The new Robert Iger era at Disney - It's about bloddy time
  • Broken Lizard's "Nutcracher" - a film about a big, mean linebacker who starts to lose his football skills and turns to ballet to get his edge back
  • Luke Willson to get castrated - Don't worry ladies, it's only for his new movie "Barry Munday"

This has nothing at all to do with my being a Star Wars fan and all but with regards to that comment made by NYTimes comapring Serenity to Star Wars, oh come on, pleaseeeeeeeeeeee!

Simone, the NYTimes is actually comparing Serenity with the recent Star Wars films which many people were very disatisfied with, particularly with the characters which many people did not find engaging. (Particularly Anakin)

If Serenity is as good as the TV series then no doubt it will give those films a run for their money. The original Star Wars was basically a western in outer space which is what Serenity is. It's good fun and it doesn't take itself too seriously!

Posted by: Morbius at September 30, 2005 03:13 PM

Morbius, I know that, but Revenge of the Sith or shall we say the rest of the prequels IS still Star Wars.

Posted by: Simone [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 30, 2005 04:35 PM

Well there's Star Wars and there's the Real Star Wars!

As one person online said recently when compiling a list of 10 reasons why Serenity was better than Star Wars, unlike Han Solo the hero of Serenity will always be able to Shoot First!

The rest of the list was pretty useless but that was a good point. George has tinkered so much that nobody knows what the real deal is any more?

Well the prequels are still Star Wars for me. Loved all of them just the same. ;-)

Oh actually, loved Revenge of the Sith the most. *winks*

Cant help it, I am a geek.

I'm one of the disatisfied guys Morbius mentioned. For me, the Star Wars prequels were crap. I tolerated the first one, disliked the second and totally hated the third (I can't understand why so many people liked it). I am still trying to forget they were made. And George Lucas should NEVER be allowed writing dialogues again.

Anyway, I can really imagine Serenity being better than that.

And Simone, I hope you're not saying you love the prequels just because they're Star Wars. Meaning that if Uwe Boll was directing episodes 7,8,9 based on Lucas scripts you would love them just the same, no matter how bad they were.

My biggest problem with the prequels was all this silly stuff about midecloroians and Anakin being a virgin birth. It's like Darth Vader started out as a henchman in the first film and ended up being a Jesus Christ figure by the time we got to the prequels.

There are many other annoying things like Padme dying after giving birth when it is clear from ROTJ that Leia remembered her. It was very sloppy. (Clearly dealing with Padme dying sometime after the twins were born would have been dramatically difficult to fit into the storyline so Lucas took the easy way out and had her die early.)

Star Trek has also suffered from this kind of tinkering with the most recent show "Enterprise" set before the original series but not fitting neatly into previously established continuity.

T-Jax & Morbius: I am very rarely passionate about things, and Star Wars including the prequels is one of those. So yes, I know many disliked the prequels and you guys are entitled to your views on it. But I guess that's how we have to accept things, because film as John always says, is subjective, we can not all like the same movie, or we can not all dislike them. That's my take on it, not just on Star Wars but on most films, and besides, I have made my peace with the many disgruntled fans, no more bickering on my part.

MTFBWYA. *winks*

P.S. T-Jax, never heard of Uwe Boll, lemme check him out. LOL

Uwe Boll...

(I'd never heard of him either.)

Morbius, youre a gentleman sir, and "youve got a bad feeling about what"??? *winks*

You never heard of Uwe Boll? Well, I guess that's OK considering who he is, but don't you guys read The Movie Blog? ;)

And Simone, I have a problem with people that are so passionate about something they are almost blind. For example "OMG, it's Star Wars!! I love it because of that and I don't care about dialogues, acting or anything similar!". Or "I love it 'coz it's Star Trek!!", or "it's made by Joss Whedon!!". Or "it's SciFi!!".

Me, I'm a big Joss Whedon fan, but he sometimes misses. The last Buffy season was weak, in my opinion. So were one or two of the Firefly episodes. Also, I am very fond of the old Star Wars movies, but I totally disliked the prequels. And I really don't understand people who are eating all the crap somebody is feeding them just because it happens to be related to something they really liked or because it happens in a certain universe and so on.

You just described me perfectly there T-Jax, but I can't help it!

I love Star Wars, flaws and all. I guess you can say I am blind, oh, and I am deaf too. *winks*
