Wonder Woman revealed

WonderWoman.jpgOver at Comic Book Movie Joss Whedon is talking up his plans for Wonder Woman:

Will Diana be able to fly under her own power, or will an invisible plane be involved? "I do not believe she will be flying. I think we have a guy who flies. I don’t see her flying. She might jump. There could be some hopping. And there may in fact be an invisible plane. But if there is, it will be because it came out really cool. And I have theories about how to make that work."

You’ve said there will be 'no star-spangled panties' like the ones Lynda Carter wore in the old TV series. Are you ruling out star-spangled miniskirts?
"Not exactly. The look that she’s sporting in DC Comics right now is closer to where I’d have her than the TV series, or the old look. The color scheme and the silhouette have to remain because they’re her. But the American flag is not what she’s going to be wearing."

You’ve also talked about her being very young. Are you thinking college-age? Teen-ager?
"I’d say that’s a pretty flexible thing because it’s her first time setting foot in the world of men. But that doesn’t necessarily mean she has to be a teen-ager. So, yes, they are thinking of a young woman. They’re thinking, I expect, of something franchise-able."

Please let's not see it be another Buffy-esque heroine. Still there's some positive things in there. Possibility of no cheesy invisible plane and star spangled pants, which probably wouldn't go down too well with a modern foreign audience anyway. Oh, and another requirement for a franchise-able hero...

He also goes on to say that the chances are the the villains won't come from Wonder Woman's past rogues gallery, that they just don't fit the new idea. What are the thoughts out there from the Wonder Woman fans?

jessica simpson. write it down.

A far fetched choice would be Uma Thruman.
But it would be cool to see a hardcore martial arts Wonder Women with a samuri sword.
However Josh Whedon is directing, so anything is possible.

Posted by: Sebmc2 at August 2, 2005 07:36 AM

From all the possible options I've heard so far, I think the best choice would be Kate Beckinsale. However, she is over 30, so I don't know if she still fits their "young woman" profile.

Posted by: T-Jax at August 2, 2005 08:11 AM

I think one actress could wow the audience and impress us with acting skills we haven't seen from her yet. That actress is of course Lauren Graham. She looks like Lynda Carter, just not as hot. Jewel Staite would be good, I haven't seen her act since the days of Flash Forward and Space Cases (both shows that I miss dearly). And she's cute and looks young. Maybe she has some projects coming up that will get her better prepared for the role of Wonder Woman, maybe she could surprise us?

I can't picture any other actress right now.

Posted by: lizardfreak12 at August 2, 2005 08:25 AM

Oh, and Bond, somebody should give you a good hard slap in the face!

Posted by: lizardfreak12 at August 2, 2005 08:27 AM

Yup, I just looked up what Jewel Staite has been up to latley. Joss Whedon, other than creating Buffy and writing for it, has made a movie called Firefly, and a movie adaptation of his show called Serenity due out sometime in September. And Jewel has starred in the show and stars in this movie as Kaylee Frye. So will we be seeing her as Wonder Woman, I think its the strongest possibility! So it seems Becca Fisher is all grown up and is ready to kick some ass!

I'm not familiar with the show Firefly, but I have to check it out now! And I have got to see Serenity.

Posted by: lizardfreak12 at August 2, 2005 08:50 AM

*show called Firefly, my mistake

Posted by: lizardfreak12 at August 2, 2005 08:51 AM

Well, Jewel Staite would be an interesting choice. However, her link with Joss Whedon doesn't necessary imply that she is a strong possibility. Morena Baccarin (Inara from Firefly/Serenity) already showed interest in the part and Joss might choose her.

Posted by: T-Jax at August 2, 2005 09:01 AM

I'm still hoping Whedon chooses me. I've got the girlish figure for it. :P

Posted by: John Campea at August 2, 2005 09:41 AM

I just think Staite is a good actress and has the right looks to play Wonder Woman. But now there are rumors that John will play Wonder Woman. Either way we can't lose right?

Posted by: lizardfreak12 at August 2, 2005 09:55 AM

Charisma Carpenter is who I believe he will look at first. She is tall and has a strong body. She looks kind of like that amazonian look that Wonder Woman is. Plus, she has the background with Joss on Buffy and Angel. And she looks absolutely killer in whatever she wears, or nothing. :) That is my choice and I think it is Joss' as well.

Wow... After reading that quote from Whedon again... I'm amazed how little has been done for the project so far. He doesn't even now for sure if she's flyig or not? He doesn't even know yet if there will be an invisible plane or not? So... exactly what HAS been done on this project so far? Anything?

Posted by: John Campea at August 2, 2005 11:11 AM

> So... exactly what HAS been done on this project so far?

From the complete version of Joss Whedon's interview:

"I’m still working out the plot. But I’m finding the moments that matter; I’m finding the things that make the story really resonate; the things that I just can’t wait to film. I have great big questions to answer, but I’m in that beautiful, free-form poetical place where you just get to think up moments and see if they fit in your movie. And that’s almost more fun than anything. And that work, which is a vital part of what got me interested in doing the job in the first place, is being done.

But I do have to see “Serenity” through. I’ll be finished with the movie within a month but I have to make sure it gets taken care of all the way through release. I have, in the past, found that I was able to do more than one thing at a time."

Posted by: T-Jax at August 2, 2005 11:53 AM

Seems a bit odd that Whedon hasn't focused much on WW lately. I imagine he had to wrap up and help promote Serenity, but you would think he'd have a moment to hang at the Starbucks or Coffee Bean for an hour or so and throw together notes for some ideas??

I'm thinking it's going to be a relative unknown who will be cast. I doubt it will be Charisma, as much as I like her as well. Not to sound mean, but she is a bit long in the tooth herself (she's over 30 but hides this).

Posted by: Franklin at August 2, 2005 01:02 PM

Denise Richards would be interesting-she's hot and not too old or too young and she was a bond girl.

Posted by: pitbullbaracuda at August 2, 2005 02:26 PM

Hides it? IMDB, the lying publicists' friend, says she's 35. I remember a magazine putting her at 32 in the first or second season of Buffy, which would make her 38 or 39. Either way, not at all the young woman type Joss's talking about. Morena Baccarin has my vote so far, though I'm sure the studio will pressure him to cast a bigger name.

Posted by: Aaron at August 2, 2005 02:29 PM

Yeah, i forgot about the whole age thing he was going for. I read that article a few days ago, so I have already forgotten certain aspects of it.

Posted by: Aaron M at August 2, 2005 03:11 PM

Why are we trying to pretend that WW hasn't totally gone over into the gay kitsch territory of Cher, Liza, etc. at this point?

Just get whatshisname who made that eyesore Moulin Rouge to write and direct, get Madonna to play the lead, and throw Rip Taylor in there somewhere. Guaranteed blockbuster.

Posted by: Peter Buldge at August 2, 2005 05:14 PM

Is anybody really going to go see this?

Posted by: adam at August 2, 2005 05:58 PM

how bout the shorter girl from the OC?

Posted by: j doe at August 2, 2005 07:37 PM

I just know Angelina is going to get a script

Posted by: The Moviequill at August 2, 2005 08:00 PM

Hell no! Jewel Staite, all the way, she would be the best choice.

Posted by: lizardfreak12 at August 2, 2005 09:27 PM

"But the American Flag is not what she's going to be wearing."

Why not? That was her colors, weren't they? And what's the deal with specifying that it won't be an American flag??

I love blatant America haters. God Bless America - the only country where you can act like a communist, live like a narcissist, speak like a marxist and act like a civil disobedeint without fear of reprisals.

Maybe her Invisible Plane can have a swatstika on it?

Posted by: SpideyFan at August 2, 2005 10:20 PM

How does that make him an America Hater? He goes on to say that she will still wear those covers, she's just not going to be covered in stars and stripes. If you have looked at the comic in the last 20 years, you would see that she doesn't wear the friggin' flag. They realized that it didn't make sense, since she isn't an American.

Ass.

amen

Posted by: lizardfreak12 at August 2, 2005 10:55 PM

I'm having a tough time taking this seriously.

Posted by: Vonhonold at August 3, 2005 12:02 AM

how about evangeline lily?....WW needs to be sexy and tough...she is both

Posted by: westsider at August 3, 2005 02:24 PM

My nominees, in no particular order:

1) Keira Knightley. Buff her up, die her hair raven black.

2) Shalom Harlow. The actress-model is 5'11. She at least fits the looks and height
requirement.

3) Naureen Zaim. New actress recently seen briefly in "Wedding Crashers"...and in the pages of Stuff.

4) Rosario Dawson. Probably the strongest contender.

Posted by: darren seeley at August 3, 2005 04:15 PM

Oooh, Dawson, good one Darren, I hadn't thought about her at all. She would be pretty cool, not to mention look the part of an Amazonian woman.

Posted by: Richard Brunton at August 4, 2005 04:49 AM

janet jackson. she is athletic, mysterious and able to handle the action hero-esqueness of the role.

Posted by: eric at August 8, 2005 06:49 PM

dawson was a good one.

but zaim was an even better one. aside from being one of the hot chicks in the wedding crashers, she's an undefeated boxer, and wonder woman needs to kick some a$$. not to mention she's a brunette and people are saying crazy things like jessica simpson.

all i can say is that they'd better not pull a daisy duke or they'll be flushing production money down the toilet. give us a real butt-kickin' brunette like naureen.

Has anyone thought about Aishwarya Rai? She's got the look, the height and the chops to pull off the Star-Spangled beauty. Just a thought.

Posted by: Dreaded_One at August 22, 2005 03:05 PM

Angelina Jolie is so hott. I'd love to see her in the WW costume.

Posted by: John Heng at September 25, 2005 12:08 AM

I'd like to see Pauley Perrette in the role. She's gorgeous, very talented, tall (5'10"), and has a chameleon-like ability to change her attitude/emotions at the drop of a hat AND her appearance can change drastically, really easily. She has the ability to play naive or badass and frankly I would love to see her run with this.

Posted by: carol at December 28, 2005 02:02 AM

oh AND she's 36...but can come off as a lot younger if necessary...personally I hate the idea of WW being less than 30.

Posted by: carol at December 28, 2005 02:03 AM

ohhh...wanted to post on some other suggestions-

Lucy Lawless...she'd be fantastic.

Shalom Harlow...agreed...she's gorgeous but she'd need to gain about 25 pounds before I'd ever want to see her as WW.

Jessica Simpson...I would not even watch the movie.

Aishwarya Rai...I saw her earlier and have to agree one hundred percent...I love her. She'd be an incredible WW and I do admit to liking the idea of stepping outside of the US to find WW....after all she is NOT supposed to be from here LOL.

I LOVE Angelina Jolie...but she's Lara Croft to me (as far as superheroine status goes - and yeah I know Lucy Lawless is Xena lol...but she has never made a major morion pic, so I can deal lol)

Gina Torres...she's definitely got the badass amazon thing going on lol...and I love to watch her.
