New Highlander starts shooting in October

Highlandtv.jpgThere can be only one. Let me rephrase that. There SHOULD have been only one. All of The Highlander films after the first one have been total rubbish... my bum itches just thinking about them. I didn't mind the TV show too much... but even that went treading on ground it should never have walked upon. Connor MacLeod won the prize, that's it, it's over. Oh... apparently not. Anyway...

Shooting for the new Highlander (the first of a trilogy... yes that's right... 2 more after this one) will begin in October. Can ANYONE out there give me any reason at all that I should be even slightly excited about this project? The good folks over at M&C; give us this:

This new adventure to be, starring Adrian Paul is the first feature in the Trilogy. The Source will tell the story of Immortals as they quest to locate the Holy Grail of their world. The entire series of films will chronicle the origins of the Immortals.

Director Brett Leonard commented "This is a tremendous opportunity for a storyteller of this genre to take part in the mythology of 20 years." He continues that "Highlander is an amazing ongoing story that I can bring my visual style to... Everything I have done has led me to this kind of mythical fantasy."

It doesn't help matters that Leonard hasn't directed anything worth watching. Am I just being pessimistic or is this project really doomed? Does anyone out there have any real hope for this thing?

And they're also making a Highlander anime series written by the writer of the TV series and directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri (Ninja Scroll, Vampire Hunter D, X TV): http://www.imagi.com.hk/movie/web/highm.htm

I liked the TV series and I hope the writer will do a good job for the new movie and the anime - but I'm not very excited. Too many sequels, as you said. Concerning the anime, I would have preferred Yoshiaki Kawajiri working on something more original.

The original movie is still considered a classic. The television series I think was very good. And both worked very well for what they were. The fact that Highlander movies keep getting made despite the fact that they are total garbage, just goes to confirm the belief that sci-fi/fantasy fans will support anything so long as it is in their domain. And unfortunately that is usually the case.

Eh. Brett Leonard.

Well, better sequels than adaptations of anything written by Stephen King, Dean Koontz or published by Marvel Comics.

I am NOT at all excited at this news...simply for the use of one phrase...."the Holy Grail of thier world'.....are they REALLY stupid enough to fall back to the premise that they are aliens from another planet???
My friend and I have written a story that explains the origins without the alien aspect..but publishing it is another story.
