Gerard Butler signs for 300

The cool Gerard Butler (he's from Scotland too don't you know) has just signed up for another big role. According to Coming Soon he's signed for star in the adaptation of Frank Millers graphic novel 300 to be directed by Zack Snyder.

Gerard Butler (Phantom of the Opera, Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life) has been signed to star. Production will begin October 17 in Montreal.

The film tells the true story of 300 elite Spartan fighters who, led by King Leonidas (Butler), fought to the death against King Xerxes' massive Persian army during the battle of Thermopylae in 481-480 B.C. According to lore, their valor inspired all of Greece to rise up against the invading Persians, planting the seeds of democracy.

Well done him, now give us an interview Mr Butler, please! I think this is another excellent step in Butlers career, however it does take him another step away from the Burns production which is having it's own difficulties. Still all those fans that have been commenting on the Phantom post can be happy!

I would be excited but untill I see otherwise then has amazing potential to be a repeat of Troy.

Bring it on!

Nah, I would disagree Pudie, this has much more potential coming from the Moore stable, especially if he's involved as he was with Sin City.

Thats a big if though. How often do you hear about creators getting as much input and Miller did on Sin City? It's almost unheard of. And on an epic roman war movie? To even finance it studios would need to pretty much guarantee a big box office which means it would be butcherd to sell to a mass audience.

Butler starred in Attila which is probably why he was picked for such a similar role here. He really shined as an up and coming actor (one of his earliest roles from 2000). Attila was a made for tv movie (4+ hours) and suffered a little from a low budget, but was overall done very well. It chronicled the beginnings of the Hun empire and the crumbling of Rome in a personally dramatic way (with a few epic battles thrown in there).

gerry will be perfect as leonidas. he has the royal bearing to pull off that role and has the acting chops to match. if the studio handles this right and cast people that could act not just pose then we should be in for a ride. oh, to be a fly on the wall when mr butler auditioned for this...

I think it will be disrespectful of me if I dont join in the discussion esp if it's about Mr. Butler. *wink* @ Richard.

As always, thanks for being the newsbearer of anything Gerry Butler Rich. Yeah, give us that interview already!!!! I have to brush up again on my Greek history eh? Saying that, we havent even seen Beowulf & Grendel yet too, also starring Gerry.

Gypsy??? Fly in the wall huh, what a tart! LOL

I'm glad to see the role of King Leonidas go to Gerard Butler, probably the most underrated actor to come along in a long time (especially as the Phantom, which, by the way, made more $154.5 million worldwide, according to BoxOfficeMojo). Butler more than lived up to that role, bringing a whole new depth of emotion, understanding, and raw physical talent (both vocally and dramatically to that part. Perhaps this latest casting in "300" will push him over the edge into the roles he deserves. He will do justice to the part.

the only reason this is bad news is I truly believe he would be a great James Bond and this pushes him further from being the next.
