Silent Hill set visit

silentHill.jpgNo, there's not a set visit from us, this is from the blog of the screen writer Roger Avary:

The soundstages are filled with the amazing work of Carol Spier -- giant, vaulted, three-story interiors as well as numerous winding corridors that are representations straight out of the game. I can't show you any pictures, because photography is harshly restricted -- but I can tell you with no hesitation that they are simply HUGE. Seeing the nine-foot-tall Red Pyramid wander around alongside the four-foot gray children somehow makes the mood on the set oddly joyful...

...Later, editor Sebastien Prangere shows me and my daughter some cut footage -- and it's striking, even though it hasn't yet been treated with the many layers of effects and filters that will give it the Silent Hill feel...

...One thing is for certain as I watch Christophe set up a multi-camera sequence with dueling Technocranes: the shots are pure Gans. His eye is evident in every setup, and in every choice of lens (anamorphic 24mm seems to be a favorite). This is, without question, a Christophe Gans film.

Sounds like Avary is impressed, and considering he wrote the screenplay I'd say that it's something for the writer to be impressed with the Director's treatment of his work, often they aren't so impressed, or the movie ends up being very different from their original script. Still, it does sound as though he is impressed and that there is a lot of effort being pushed into this movie. I wonder if this could come out on the better side of the adaptations? What do you guys, the fans of Silent Hill, think of the sound of this?

I just hope this movie is excellent, as well as creepy. I want to get the same chills from the movie as I got from playing the games. Everything sounds good so far.

Okay, let's catch our breath here....

Here's hoping that the Silent Hill Film will at least me watchable. I squirm any time I hear about the Resident Evil films. God, they were excruciatingly terrible! As long as the director keeps humour out of the film, (besides the beginnig) and the film stays true to Konami's "Silent Hill" laws.

I say this, because, I read in an interview with Sean Bean, he mentioned that there are two "planes". Now, one is our everyday realm, the other....a hellish mirror image of our world, only textures and buildings are much more rusted, almost as if they've been painted of dried blood. So, it came as a shock to hear from Mr. Bean that the normal plane is ordinary Silent Hill, and the nightmare realm is clouded in dense fog. Two seconds of playing Silent Hill, you'll find that Silent Hill, with or without the hellish plane/realm, the foggy mist is ALWAYS present. This is something that mystifies the town, and adds to the creepyness of it.

I also do hope they keep civilians down to a very strict minimum. In Silent Hill's series, if you were to meet up with a local, or someone else trapped in the town, they'd seem awfully odd, and un-trustworthy, much like the appearance of the town: Shady.

Story-line wise, I guess this Rose story will do...I really hoped they would craft the film after "Silent Hill 2". The story is MUCH darker, following James (Sean Bean bearing an UNCANNY resemblance to) whom is looking for his wife in Silent Hill, as requested by her, through a series of letters she sends him....the only problem James is facing, is the fact that Mary has died. Three years ago. By HIS hands. It is until the end of the game that you discover that you, James, were indeed the murderer, and suffer emotional trauma. THAT right there, my friends.....is a film just waiting to happen, and it would captivate ALL movie-goers. This Rose story-line may seem to hook fans of the series, let's hope it retains dark, and abusive themes....Silent Hill is notorious for it, not "family" friendly stories.

The one thing I AM looking forward to in the completion of the Silent Hill film, is something you cannot even see: Sound. The series, noted for it's use of bizarre, mysterious and unexplained creatures and darkened phenomena, is also superb when it comes to audio. Mostly, it is the static of a radio, indicating that danger is nearby. (Radio signals are somehow interfered w/monsters) But it is the creature sounds, odd and uneven breathing, slurching and slithering of an unknown something wiggling around in the shadows. It gets drawn together by an ambient, quiet, yet industrial soundtrack, that makes one's ears anticipate movement. From dead silence with the odd whisper, to the violent banging of lead and steel pipes, Silent Hill's music is as much a factor as the fog, alternate realm, and even main characters.

Good luck with this film, I'm not acquainted with Christophe, therefore, I'm not sure I'm relative to what he's directed in the past. I trust his judgement so far, by having Konami behind the character/monster development, that is, unless they booted them off the set, much like the Resident Evil, and Alone in the Dark shoot. Capcom can't seem to keep a firm hand on their OWN creation, it seems.

Please Mr. Gans, whatever you do, don't TRY for a blokbuster hit. It is then, that you will produce trife, like Resident Evil, and the videogame-turned-movie products of today. I have faith in this series, as a motion picture, so the only thing you can do to ruin this feature, is add pyrotechnics. Please do not add pyrotechnics. This is a sure-fire way to spend money, yes, but a way to frown the movie-goers, SH fans, and videogame-film-fans alike.

..."Red Pyramid". Does that mean they're working Pyramid Head into this obvious adaptation of Silent Hill 1? You know, merging games did not work for Resident Evil...

I know, I'm scared too, Jordana.....

I'm scared too....

The thing that really nags me in the nag area, is the fact that they've decided to put a spin on the characters. I would have thought a guy looking for his daughter would be more emotional. Not many actresses can make me believe their daughter is in danger, most make me believe that THEY'RE in danger....dunno....I just feel that Silent Hill 2 has the better story line. It was MADE for the silver screen. Agree? Thoughts?

Also...Pyramid Head was a creation of James/Mary's imagination from SH 2. In each game, the environmental changes, the enemies, and sounds reflect that of the main character, or overall theme of the game. SH 1-Kids and their view of others/ getting teased, etc. SH 2-Spousal abuse/Spousal murder/sexual angst SH 3-Underlaying Religion/Destiny/Sacrifice SH 4-Birth/ending life and beginnig a "new" one

There is no way anyone from part one would create Pyramid Head. He was James' punisher, for killing his wife. Would follow him around and kill Maria, whom was the spitting image of Mary, so James would witness his "wife" dying over and over again. (Maria is killed several times).

I know what you mean, Garrett. I was really pulling for SH2. There was more storyline in that video game than there are in most blockbuster movies nowadays. It was so intelligent, so psychological, that even people who hate "supernatural" and "monster" movies would have loved it, if it had been done right. But perhaps if this Silent Hill is successful, they will move on to doing SH2, and perhaps do it justice.

I'm a huge fan of the Silent Hill series. But games being made into movies are usually disapointments. They're going to mess up the whole movie with special fxs and stuff.

I REALLY THINK THAT TO MAKE A GOOD SILENT HILL MOVIE, IT HADS TO BE 100% COMPLETELY BASED ON SILENT HILL 2.IN MY OPINION IT COULD POSSIBLY BE ONE OF THE BEST EMOTIONALLY POWERFUL MOVIES EVER MADE. TO MAKE IT EVEN MORE POWERFUL, IT SHOULD HAVE THAT RELIGIOUS THEME."A MAN DID SOMETHING HORRIBLE TO HIS WIFE AND HE HAS TO GO THROUGH A PERSONAL PERGATORY TO REMEMBER WHAT HE DID, BE PUNISHED FOR IT, AND FINALLY BE REDEEMED.AND ALSO,PLEASE MAKE A GOOD,CREEPY YET REAL LOOKING PYRAMID HEAD. THE MORE REAL IT ALL IS, THE MORE SIMILAR TO THE GAME IT IS, THE SCARIER IT IS,THEN THE MORE EMOTIONALLY EFFECTIVE THE MOVIE WILL BE. PYRAMID HEAD RULES!

I can't help but have a bad feeling about this. This movie is not being made for SH fans as much as it is being made for the general public. I believe they are going to rip off bits and pieces from the games, throw in some of their own off-the-wall garbage and ruin the reputation of the Silent Hill franchise. (A strictly SH2 movie would have been awesome-no added BS needed!) It will then be too late to try and fix it with a part 2 because they will basically have to create a whole new story (since they are apparently combining the games in part 1). I hope that I am wrong and that this movie changes the overall opinion on movies based on games.
