Top 100 movie quotes from AFI

CinemaSeats.jpgThe AFI have run down their Top 100 Movie Quotes of all time on American TV last night, and the guys over at JoBlo are carrying the full list.

I love lists like this, firstly I'm a guy, and guy's love lists. Secondly I love movies. Double win. I also like sitting in front of the telly with beer\wine\whisky and watching a programme that promotes debate around the room. Even if it's just me. It sounds like this did just that too.

Here's the top ten:

1. "Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn," Gone With the Wind, 1939.
2. "I’m going to make him an offer he can’t refuse," The Godfather, 1972.
3. "You don’t understand! I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. I could’ve been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what I am," On the Waterfront, 1954.
4. "Toto, I’ve got a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore," The Wizard of Oz, 1939.
5. "Here’s looking at you, kid," Casablanca, 1942.
6. "Go ahead, make my day," Sudden Impact, 1983.
7. "All right, Mr. DeMille, I’m ready for my close-up," Sunset Blvd., 1950.
8. "May the Force be with you," Star Wars, 1977.
9. "Fasten your seatbelts. It’s going to be a bumpy night," All About Eve, 1950.
10. "You talking to me?" Taxi Driver, 1976.

I have to say, although the order might change a little, these are all deserving of the top ten. Can you think of any others that should be up there? It's also interesting that there weren't many quotes from Tarantino movies, as usual perhaps looking back from the last ten years. "I'll be back" is number 37!

Agree? Disagree? Have a quote that should have made it? Check out the full list at JoBlo and come back and debate away!

"Khhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnn!!!!" would have to be in my Top 10.

Posted by: Naladahc at June 22, 2005 07:03 AM

Except for number 9 that is a great list.

Posted by: Lou Sytsma at June 22, 2005 08:44 AM

woops, hit enter instead of shift. Anyways. So, why did nothing get put on there from the first matrix movie. Like, "There is no spoon". And what about Princess Bride "My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die." They really should have just asked the guys at MST3000 what quotes to put in. That is all they do. They simply quote the most famous movies in not so famous ones. And, I hate to say it, but what about Titanic's infamous, "I'm the king of the world!!!" I'll think of more soon, but that is all I can think of for now.

Posted by: Aaron M at June 22, 2005 10:31 AM

I'm king of the world was No. 100 ;p.

It's somewhere in the 70s on this list, but a personal favorite of mine is:
SOYLENT GREEN IS PEOPLE!!!!!!

Posted by: Joseph Simmons at June 22, 2005 10:52 AM

I'm actually very surpised by this list. Normally they are very much skewed towards recent films.

I suppose that top 10 is pretty good, seeing as I know all the quotes but haven't seen all the films.

Posted by: Dom Dunc at June 22, 2005 11:14 AM

Oh yeah, personally that is one of my favourite quotes...I love Princess Bride. Or anything from Airplane! Don't call me Shirley!

Posted by: Richard Brunton at June 22, 2005 11:15 AM

Somebody beat me to it with the quote from Princess Bride, that's one I definitely would have loved to see there.

"I'm Batman" is a classic in my book, but only the original Keaton version. He nailed that scene.

"Heeeeeere's Johnny!" from The Shining is a pretty good one too. Classic Jack.

And then just for my own perverted tastes, I love the line from Silence of the Lambs:
"It rubs the lotion on it's skin or else it gets the hose again."

Posted by: Richard (not Brunton) at June 22, 2005 12:20 PM

"I want you to hit me as hard as you can." How can that NOT be in there!

Posted by: adam at June 22, 2005 04:13 PM

"Spank you....spank you very much!"

"You can't handle the truth!" Should have been higher on the list.

"No sir! I didn't see you playing with your dolls again sir"

Posted by: Prophecy at June 22, 2005 04:21 PM

If they are going to quote Bette Davis movies, they really should have my all-time fave, "What a dump!" in there somewhere. It's a classic in its own right.

Posted by: Lilly at June 22, 2005 04:47 PM

And it is there, No. 62.

Posted by: Lilly at June 22, 2005 04:52 PM

there are too many great quotes to limit it to 100

Princess Bride is also one of my all time favorites

Butch Cassidy
"Who ARE those guys?"

Posted by: Phil at June 22, 2005 05:10 PM

I'd pick the following over any of those ...

"Nihilists! Fuck me. I mean, say what you like about the tenets of National Socialism, Dude, at least it's an ethos."
-The Big Lebowski

"You can't really dust for vomit."
-This is Spinal Tap

Posted by: Jaboo at June 22, 2005 06:23 PM

Joseph Simmons had it right I recognise almost every quote in the top 100 even though I have not seen many of the movies. Most of the stuff you guys are pouring out maybe good quotes from movies you love, but I don't recognise most of the quotes you guys are throwing out there.

"Houston we have a problem" although it is a great quote that everyone recognises, I do not think it should be in the top 100 movie quotes because people know it first for it's place in history. The movie just happens to use I great quote. Hell, they could have used it in Armegeddon (maybe they did) and it would have made the top 100 if it was not already used in Apollo 13.

Posted by: Glasseyerod at June 22, 2005 08:33 PM

i'll admit "i'll be back" and "austa la vista, baby" are popular quotes, but i highly disagree that they are great quotes.

anyway the greatest quote from the terminator movies has got to be, "It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead!"

"nobody puts baby in a corner" shouldn't have been on the list.

i really thought "Wait a minute, wait a minute. You ain't heard nothin' yet!" should have been a lot higher than 71

"houston, we have a problem" was popular and a well known quote before the movie, i just don't think it fits.

i have other complaints but otherwise pretty good.

Posted by: bigwig at June 22, 2005 09:44 PM

How could "Luke, I am your father!" get robbed? I mean c'mon, "May the Force be with you" is great and all, but it didn't define an entire movie franchise.

stupid AFI :)

Posted by: MaT at June 22, 2005 11:15 PM

I think the best quotes are one's the average person could say when they get in situations. And "Luke, I am your father." should be up there.

Posted by: Kenn at June 23, 2005 01:13 AM

actually guys, its
"no, i am your father"

Posted by: bigwig at June 23, 2005 01:34 AM

It's good to be the King! Another classic. But then again we could probably throw 100 classic Mel Brooks movie quotes out there on our own.

Posted by: Richard (not Brunton) at June 23, 2005 10:57 AM

You Guys tell me what you think of this and if it should be on the top 100. "If it moves, then we can kill it."

- Predator

tell me if u like that one

Posted by: joshua at June 23, 2005 06:50 PM

I love the Predator quotes...actually it's...

"If it bleeds we can kill it!"

"Bunch of slack-jawed faggots around here. This stuff will make you a god damned sexual Tyrannosaurus, just like me."

"You're bleeding, man.
I ain't got time to bleed.
You got time to duck?"

"I'm scared.
Bullshit. You ain't afraid of no man.
There's something out there waiting for us, and it ain't no man. We're all gonna die."

"Anytime."

...and those jokes from Hawkins...oh man.

Posted by: Richard Brunton at June 23, 2005 07:27 PM

o yea

if it BLEEDS we can kill it

Posted by: joshua at June 23, 2005 07:50 PM

2 things...

1 - it amazes me how many people use the quote, "Luke, I am your father." That was never in any Star Wars movie! And as bigwig pointed out, the correct quote is, "No, I ma your father."

2 - Great list. Of course we all have quotes that we would like to see in there that are our personal favorites, but these quotes are staples to our culture. Everyone knows them and uses them sometimes.
I mean c'mon. You can't really expect a quote from "Fight Club" or "The Big Lebowski" (great quote BTW Jaboo!) to be in there over. "Go ahead, make my day" can you?

I thought of a few more. Some I can see being on there and some are just favorites of mine.
"I'll be your huckleberry" -Tombstone

"They may take our lives, but they'll never take our freedom" -Braveheart

The entire Royale w/ cheese speech from Pulp Fiction.

Not really a quote, but memorable quotes the birds from Finding Nemo "Mine"

Posted by: Aaron M at June 24, 2005 09:30 AM

Really glad to see a Dirty Harry suggested here, really thought that would have ranked quite high.

Along with "You're only supposed to blow the bloody doors off". Or is that just too British?

Posted by: sunnydunny at June 26, 2005 12:29 PM

((58. “Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer,” “The Godfather Part II,” 1974)).....now that is a quote sure to be in the top ten....((48. “Well, nobody’s perfect,” “Some Like It Hot,” 1959.))...another one, good quotes are quotes that make sense and are true....words with meaning.

Posted by: Dom at July 14, 2005 01:45 AM

oh yea got another one....Scar face- First you get the money....then you get the power....and then you get the women....great quote(Go Al Pacino)....also i totally agree with number 5, could of have been even higher.

Posted by: Dom at July 14, 2005 01:55 AM

my favorite quote would be" i felt compelled to come over here and tell you that you have an absolutely breathtaking hynee..i mean that thing is good..i wanna be friends with it.
