Russell Crowe Apologizes

You know, I'm the first guy to call any celebrity who acts like a 4 year old a jerk. Mr. Russell Crowe has acted like a 4 year old a number of times and I've often commented on how difficult he makes it to enjoy his fantastic performances because of his off camera nonsense.

Now, having said that... I also like to give credit where credit is due. Last night, Russell Crowe went on the David Letterman show and used the opportunity to publicly apologize for the "thrown phone" incident. Here's how MSNBC recounts the appearance:

“This is possibly the most shameful situation I’ve ever gotten myself in in my life, and I’ve done some pretty dumb things in my life,” the Australian actor told David Letterman. “So to actually make a new number one is spectacularly stupid.”
A little bit of humility covers over a multitude of sins. So here's the deal... if I'm going to slam Crowe for acting like an idiot... then I've gotta give him his due when he goes on national TV and says something like this. Good on ya Russell. Keep it up and you might win some of us movie fans back who deep down really do want to like you.

He sorry now since The Contender has been sinking at the box office, and looks like it will sink even more after this weekend. The fact is, this bad publicity is not good advertising for his latest movie, and the studio behind it is probably very annoyed with Crowe.

Never mind whether you should care about the off-camera behavior of an actor. The general public apparently DOES care, and it affects their attitude toward an actor's movie. So the studios themselves care, too. Why cast an actor who, despite being very talented, has the potential to turn off audiences because of his private life antics? There's a lot of money at stake when producing a movie.

Oops, I meant Cinderella Man (not The Contender, which was a reality show). :)

It doesnt kill to apologize, I am glad he did that.

No love lost there Russ. ;-)

Yeah. Howard Stern just played the Letterman bit.

It was kind of shocking to hear him directly apologize on tv to the guy that he hit with the phone.

I'm in the same boat as you. He's an ass but a great actor. I've liked him since the first time I saw him in the small Australian film "The Sum of Us".

I've been envious ever since he starred with Salma Hayek in this really crappy chick flick 'Breaking Up' a while back.

But I'm not biased and I'll give him credit for apologizing.

This has publicity stunt written all over it.

Day 1 Highly tauted new movie tanks at box office
Day 2 Throws phone at hotel guy that causes no serious harm
Day 3 Scheduled to be on Letterman - now he can call himself stupid
Day 4 Calls Hugh Grant and thanks him for the idea

Doubt it's a publicity stunt -- you don't do something that could possibly send you to jail when you have a little baby at home. He's got a temper, he let it rage, he did something stupid, he got arrested and now he's owning up to it. As for the scheduling of Letterman, he's been doing Cinderella Man appearances for the past two weeks, it's just another stop on his list.

Um, has anyone ever wondered if he apologised to his victim *before* his turn on Letteran, you know, as in privately, first? If he did, then I would say he's sincere. If not, then I do believe it could be for one of two reasons: PR stunt, or the victim took out a restraining order ASAP the second he got home from the hospital with his lawyer in tow.

My money's on it being a bit of both reasons.

What is it with him and the antics whenever a film of his opens? Brawls, phone throwing...WHAT IS THE DEAL? Of course he should apolegize but he is a CLOWN. Carry a cell phone for chrissakes. Who uses landline phones anyway - hotel or otherwise?

An Asshole is still an Asshole... Shouldn't take too long for this Asshole to blow up again... His 'success' on screen had obviously pumped up his ego (the one he sits on)...

Russell Crowe should stick to ackting otherwise he will end up like Mickey Rourke. By the way, I am not dissing Mickey as he has realised the error of his way, and is by his own words, making up for lost time. CALM DOWN RUSS!!!!
