Stephen Sommers remaking When Worlds Collide

Nothing beats a huge sci-fi disaster epic. Well, perhaps a good movie, and sometimes even a bad one, but if you've got someone like Stephen Sommers at the helm you know that at least it will be a lot of fun. Coming Soon bring us news of the latest big budget Earth on the brink of destruction movie.

Paramount has set The Mummy, The Mummy Returns and Van Helsing director Stephen Sommers to write and direct a remake of the 1951 sci-fi film When Worlds Collide, reports Variety. Sommers will produce with Bob Ducsay, his partner in the Sommers Co.

In the original, scientists discover that another planet is veering dangerously close to Earth, and they make plans for a small group of humans to leave the planet before the inevitable deadly collision.

The trade adds that When Worlds Collide is expected to be ambitious in budget and scale.

Seriously, you can't deny his movies don't look good and are fun. Even Helsing was a laugh, although not a great movie. If he can find more of that Mummy magic to spin into it then there could be a lot of hope, and perhaps he can, there's certainly an old movie feel to both stories and it might just be up Sommers street. He certainly can cope with big effects and big scale, and it seems that's what the studio want it to be.

Yet, has there been a successful and enjoyable big scale disaster movie of late? Or even at all? What's your favourite? Pre Spielbergs World disaster epic of course.
