Ray Liotta to turn to comedy

RayLiotta.jpgI'm really struggling with this spate of big stars that have a past career of great movies, diverse character roles and much, much acclaim that step up to take part in a comedy. I just find they end up demeaning their star image and end up making a complete hash of it.

Point and case, Dustin Hoffman and Robert De Niro in particular, for the Meet the...movies. Awful and embarrassing.

So along plods Ray Liotta for the next round, and I'm worried for him. According to Yahoo:

...will star as an unfaithful husband trying to repair his broken marriage in an upcoming film comedy about love and football.

Rachel Blanchard, Glenne Headly and Shaun Sipos also have been cast in the indie film "Comeback Season," to be written and directed by Bruce McCulloch ("Stealing Harvard," "Superstar.")

Well he has tackled comedy before, but he was a bad guy, a role he pulls off all to well. I don't know, this one could go either way. What do you think, and what do you think of the trend of actors ruining their career like this?

First time I will have to disagree with you there Rich, thank goodness! I think if we know that the film is a comedy then we should give them some slack, I mean isnt it okay to be silly, and it's nice to have a relief from serious roles, and personally I dont think Hoffman did bad in "Meet the Fockers", I actually thought he was outrageous! Have you not seen it yet Rich?

Personally I love Ray Liotta ever since I first saw GoodFellas(if you haven't seen it.. rent it now),. he does play a bad guy so well, and maybe he can pull of a comedic role the same way he can play a character who deals drugs.. but i don't think so personally....actors ruining their careers doing this route?.. sure Vin Diesel in the Pacifier is a new example... he should have stuck to XXX2(tho some people think it was a "wise" move,I hated XXX by the way)... but... sometimes it works out brilliantly....for example Robin Williams... one of the greatest actors of our time doing Insomnia and One Hour Photo, they were way outside of his usual "mould" and they happend to work out for him,for a guy who is usually funny and over the top, to a psychopath killer...So as far as actors ruining their careers by doing something outside of their normal, they should make sure they have the talent and depth of talent needed in order to do so.... Vin Diesal is an action star, and in my opinion can only play that(which he does barely),but people with such raw talent as Williams can play any role they want, any genre they want....

OH YEAH!... I have to agree with Simone... I thought they did a decent job.. nothing special and they shouldn't quit there day roles... but come on.... those movies were decent and they didn't exactly hurt their Acting status

Why thank you Ray. *winks*

Liotta was great in "Goodfellas" as he also was in "Identity", "Field of Dreams", "Unlawful Entry", I also watched him opposite Whoopi Goldberg in "Corrina, Corrina" and he wasnt too bad either, I'd look out for this for sure.

Totally disagree on these movies, they are just cheap shams of comedy and I genuinely find them embarassing to watch. God, I'd rather watch a Carry On film, and I'd probably "laugh" more.

Liotta is a great actor though, and Ray totally agree with Williams in those two movies, One Hour Photo more though. That movie was stunning and his performance, considering his past career, was astounding and really moved the audience. One scene where he talks to a little boy had the audience I was with really uneasy, and audibly so. Excellent.

Aw Rich you are very hard to please when it comes to movies. *winks*

Now I havent seen "One Hour Photo" yet, maybe I should.

some of the best actors including tom hanks, michael keaton and robin williams got their start as comedians in comedy films. then they branched out into drama. i don't see the problem doing it the other way around.

it wouldn't ruin the actor/actress's career but provide them another challenge to as you say, "diversify their character." at the same time, if it doesn't work then yes, their career will suffer.

latest movie i watched was hannibal and ray liotta was very sleazy in that one. he played the corrupt superior to clarice to a t.

What was wrong with GoodFellas?

Posted by: Ray` at April 14, 2005 07:15 AM

Who said something's wrong with "Goodfellas" Ray?

Saying that, whatever happened to Joe Pesci?

At least we know the director is really funny. Bruce McCulloch was one of the Kids in the Hall. I haven't seen either of his other two movies (I have a rule about not seeing SNL spin-off films), but he was always one of my favorite "Kids". Also, Ray Liotta cracked me up several times in Goodfellas. Something about the way he laughs, makes me laugh. The only thing that really bugs me about this story is that it involves football in some way, and I hate everything about football.

I don't know Simone... maybe he's HOME ALONE... AHHAHA what a good pun... Im proud of myself lol..

Im a big Jim Carry fan... But it seems to be ruining his career BATMAN... maybe he only had the style for comedy anyways....Well now that I think of it.. he didn't do a bad job "acting"... it's just that the movies sucked."......Spotless Mind" was alright.

KIDS IN THE HALL WAS ONE OF THE FUNNIEST SHOWS EVEr... a little twisted, and very weird.. but good

No, no. I'm not making the sweeping statement that comedy movies ruin an actors career, I'm saying that of late big movie stars have been harming their career in doing these very poor comedies.

J.T's new movie Be Cool Sucked..... so much... words cannot serve justice to its suckiness, and there is a long list of actors who join crap comedy's so your point is well proven.
