Joss Whedon confirmed to write and direct Wonder Woman

whedon2.jpgIt's confirmed. Joss Whedon is signed to write and direct for Wonder Woman. From Reuters through Yahoo.

Whedon as signed to write and direct "Wonder Woman," a live-action film adaptation of the DC Comics character, for Warner Bros. Pictures.

"Wonder Woman is the most iconic female heroine of our time, but in a way, no one has met her yet," Whedon said in a statement. "What I love most about icons is finding out what's behind them, exploring the price of their power."

He added: "There is a woman behind the legend who is very fascinating, very uncompromising and in her own way almost vulnerable. She's someone who doesn't belong in this world, and since everyone I know feels that way about themselves, the character clicked for me."

Looking good for Wonder Woman then, and the announcement comes three days after that of the X-Men 3 announcement...Was he holding on for the second choice? Did he perhaps want X3 over Wonder Woman, or was it just that this decision was the one we wanted to hear and would just overshadow that of the X-Men?

Whatever, hardly matters now. The great news is that Whedon is on for this and it could really turn into something good. He's hinting at it already in the quote above, a genesis tale perhaps?

I think we all knew this announcement was coming. We posted a while ago that X3 and Wonderwoman were both just waiting to see what Joss was going to do. I think it's clear Joss picked the WW project weeks ago, which in turn got X3 to get their second choice. This is indeed good news for Wonder Woman. But I'm still sad for X3.

I don't have a problem with as long as he doesn't automatically jump to Sarah Michelle Gellar for Wonder Woman. If she happens to the right person than so be it, but at least look around.

I heard that Whedon wants Kim Basinger and producer Joel Silver wants Jessica Biel... there was speculation that Whedon was holding out to sign on until they could agree on someone for the part. Hopefully they both agreed on someone other than these two!

I've never watched this guy's shows and what makes it really hard for me to get excited about him is that the picture you use on this site makes him look like a child abuser.

This will fail big time, I'm talking Catwoman type failure. Nobody is going go watch a movie about a cheesy female superhero. Just the fanbois, if there are any left. With Whedon on board, I'm sure it will be well-written but it will just be a well-written turd that nobody will go see. What a waste.

I have high hopes for a Whedon-helmed Wonder Woman. The current Wonder Woman comics are very timely and deal with Wonder Woman's role as an ambassador, as well as the fallout from a book that she wrote about her values and beliefs. The one question mark about the movie for me is the costume. They really have to nail that to get people to buy into the movie. I guess that we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

I loved wonder woman back in the late 1970's she was my favorite superhero and watched the series alot even on the scifi channel they use to show her I grew up on her, and had a doll of her too. it would be great if Joss Whedon can bring her to the movie theatres and make it a hot cool movie this coming summer. because catwoman was a hot movie too and I will see wonder woman at the theatres next, God bless him of bringing her to the theatres.

I have faith that Joss can do justice to Wonder Woman. However, if the rumors of Biel or Basinger become true I will be so disappointed. I cannot see either as Wonder Woman - especially Biel. Come on, Wonder Woman needs to be strong and shapely - not some friggin stick girl.
When it comes to superheroes casting unknowns has many times been the smart move.

adam,
Wonder Woman is a pop culture icon. Not some secondary character like Catwoman or Elektra. It will only be cheesie if its written so, with Whedon at the helm... not going to happen.

If you haven't seen his other work, you have no idea how good he is. All of his stories, whether set in a toy box (Toy Story) or outer space (Firefly), are always moving and thoroughly entertaining. This could be the best comic book-icon movie in years. I'm sure given some time, money and talent, Joss'll come through with an excellent film. Can't wait for Serentity on 9.30, either.

LAUREN GRAHAM !!! I have been a HUGE fan of Lynda Carter/Wonder Woman. I never wanted a movie made if Lynda wasn't WW. However, being about 30 years later, that's not possible. When Gilmore Girls premiered, it was the FIRST time I thought to myself, now there's the ONLY person that would nail it. Lauren Graham has amazing Wonder Woman looks and qualities about her. In my own opinion, Lauren is the FIRST and only person I felt that would portray the Wonder Woman I fell in love with 30 years ago. And Lauren is TOTALLY interested in the part. I'll keep my fingers crossed!!!

I've been a HUGE Lynda Carter/Wonder Woman fan for as long as I can remember. I never wanted to see a WW movie if Lynda Carter didn't do it (or be part of the casting process). Her understated sex appeal and human warmth made WW the icon she is today. I think the next woman cast should not be a familiar face. It worked with Lynda and lightening has been known to strike twice! Hey Oprah!...I would love to play this role myself...Can you make my wildest dream come true!???

I think the best choice to play the part is definately SANDRA BULLOCK. She is tall and has the curves for the part, and the look.

I think Lucy Lawless should play Wonder Woman, I mean Xena was awesome and she looks just like Wonder Woman and she has the body for it and the skills Whedon should give me a holler if he needs a costume for her

Jennifer Love Hewitt as Wonder Woman. She would define the role much like Chris Reeve defined Superman, Michael Keaton defined The Batman, and Tobey Maguire defined Spider-Man.
Love is power, Love is justice, Love is Wonmder Woman.

LAUREN GRAHAM = WONDER WOMAN #1 Choice.
Lauren Graham will be Wonder Woman. She was made for it.
Everyone else is to old or just been in to many movies.

Lauren Graham will be Wonder Woman!!!!!!!

Posted by: Logan at October 27, 2005 05:40 PM

Lauren Graham? Lets look it up...

Hey this girl is 38!!! (So am I) Why do people not get Wonder Woman?

She is an immortal, she should never look a day older than 25!

Nor should her mother so lets have no more of this Lynda Carter to play her mother rubbish either.

Get with the program people!

Oy Morbius, CHILL! LOL

Posted by: Simone at October 27, 2005 06:20 PM

No Simone, this is not a case of who would you like to play Wonder Woman it is a case of who is Right to play Wonder Woman? I am sick of Hollywood thinking they know best and ruining comic characters.

Here is the criteria for Wonder Woman folks - Female, Beautiful, Tall, Athletic/Curvy Brunette age 18-25. Ideally at the lower end of the age bracket so she could appear in a sequel or two.

And the criteria for the actress playing her mother - Female, Beautiful, Tall, Athletic/Curvy Brunette age 18-25. Ideally at the lower end of the age bracket so she could appear in a sequel or two.

In fact the same actress could easily play both roles!

Bret - "Michael Keaton defined Batman"

Then how come there was not an outcry when was replaced in the third and fourth film. Could you imagine how it would have gone down if Superman III has starred a different actor to Reeve?

Sure those films were not great but it was not Kilmer or Clooney who were blamed for their failings.

As for Wonder Woman she was long ago defined by Lynda Carter.
