Hollywood and Nicolas Cage set to burn Wicker Man

WickerMan.jpgI couldn't believe it then, and I can't believe it now. Thanks very much to Variety through Coming Soon for breaking me the most upsetting news since...well...since Braveheart I guess!

Here's another Scottish based movie that's about to get the Hollywood treatment and be totally ruined I'm sure. Not only are they throwing a big name actor who has had a run of bad luck of late at it, but they're also boxing it up and shipping it over to the States. Grrr! Hackles are up. I'm building a wicker DVD player to buy this, put it in and burn it.

Nicolas Cage's next picture will be director Neil LaBute's remake of 1973 thriller The Wicker Man, with Millennium Films, Equity Pictures and Emmett/Furla Films producing, reports Variety.

LaBute adapted the screenplay, in which a sheriff investigates the disappearance of a young girl on a remote island off the coast of Maine. His hopes of unraveling the girl's disappearance become increasingly uncertain when he discovers evidence of pagan rituals.

Maine?! Cage?! NOOOOOOO! The original Wicker Man is a truly wonderful film with great performances from both Edward Woodward and Christopher Lee - see the shades of magician in him as he dances in a dress! It's spooky as hell and the dread just steps up scene by scene.

Excellent movie about to be trashed. I hang my head once again. Why can't they just leave good movies alone?

The Wickerman is perhaps my all-time favorite Horror Film. I must say that Neil LaBute is an interesting choice for a remake...But Cage is a baaaaad choice (don't get me wrong, I usually like Cage as an actor...)

And don't get me started on the stupidity of an island of the coast of Maine....Retarded Choice...It was the very "Scottish" nature of The Wickerman which gave the island so much appeal in the film.

I could buy relocating The Ring to Seattle...It worked quite well...But this...I don't know.

Still Neil LaBute's "Your Friends and Neighbors" and "The Company of Men"...hell...Even Nurse Betty were excellent films though...

I must say I find it easier to believe the idea of pre-Christian religion surviving in far north Scotland than I believe it surviving in Maine.

This film has so much going against it just in theory, LaBute is going to have to pull off something amazing.

A remake is bad enough, but relocating it to Maine - or anywhere in the US - is ridiculous. How do these people expect to pass off the idea of a pagan society that has survived under a veneer of Christianity when none of the population has any pagan roots to start with?

Nicholas Cage/ Nicolas Coppola ;

What a story line for a "Godfather" type movie;

The "Terrible Genna(s)", Chicago, 1920's

Do just a little research, what a cast of charactors!
