Eddie Murphy in Johnny Blaze

Eddie_Murphy.jpgEvery once in a while you hear an idea that sounds just so stupid you have to read it again... and after reading it again you think to yourself "well... actually... that could be kinda interesting". Such is my reaction to the following news offered to us by the good folks over at ComingSoon:

DreamWorks and Imagine have set Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle screenwriters Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg to write Johnny Blaze, an action comedy that will be developed as a star vehicle for Eddie Murphy. Variety says Imagine's Brian Grazer will produce.

Murphy would play the title character, an old-school rapper who retires and becomes a private eye who solves crimes within the hip-hop world.

You know what... I'll probably regret saying this in about 20 minutes... but I actually think this could be kinda fun. Eddie Murphy is one of those guys who will surprise you every now and again (even though most of his modern stuff sucks). Who knows... this could be good. Am I crazy?

I love most of the stuff that Eddie Murphy has done.

Special mention to "Coming to America", "The Distinguished Gentleman", "trading Places, "Vampire in Brooklyn", "The Nutty Professor" and boy, even "Haunted House" are some of my favorite Murphy projects. I havent even said "Beverly Hills Cop" and "48 Hours"! And how could Donkey from Shrek be more adorable but for him?

i think it could be a return to form for eddie, but it all depends on how they play it.
actually i've been saying that for mos tof his recent films :(

what else have the "harold and kumar..." guys done?

You are not crazy. :)

Remember how young Murphy was when he started his movie career in 48 HOURS? Barely old enough to shave. He has lots of life in him yet.

(Favorite Eddie Murphy roles: The Klump Family, in THE NUTTY PROFESSOR I & II, the paranoid actor in BOWFINGER, the hero of THE GOLDEN CHILD and of course the homeless man in TRADING PLACES.

That line "I've got legs! And I can see!" cracks me up every time. Or when he calls Charles Dance "Brother Numsy" in THE GOLDEN CHILD...
*laughs uncontrollably*

I don't think the idea sounds bad at all. It could be funny, it could completely lame, we'll just have to wait and see what these guys come up with.
I really like Murphy and would like to see him in something less family oriented again.
