Miami Vice Movie News

Well it looks like it's all official now. Miami Vice the Movie is moving full steam ahead. As a matter of fact, Universal has already set a release date for the film. If you wanna get in line for tickets now, you'll be there until July 28th, 2006.

The good folks over at Box Office Mojo give us the official news:

Universal has targeted July 28, 2006 to uncover Miami Vice, director Michael Mann's adaptation of his 1980's television show. Colin Farrell, no stranger to action TV remakes after S.W.A.T., and Jamie Foxx, who previously worked with Mann on Collateral and Ali, take over for Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as detectives Crockett and Tubbs, respectively.
WIth Mann at the helm I think this actually has a chance at being pretty decent. I loved the old show... I hope they still use Yon Hammer's (sp?) theme.

I can't wait to see this flick! Michael Mann is one of the best film makers around, and I've been a fan since Manhunter. I didn't really care for Ali, but every other Mann flick has been at the very least good, and in most cases, excellent!Alter Ego Comics

You almost got it right, John. It's spelled Jan Hammer, and yes, I too hope Mann will keep the theme in some form. If I had my way, the movie would open up to a carbon copy of the TV show, with bright colors, outdoor panoramas - basically visuals that go with Hammer's techno-aural wizardry...

But after the final note dies out, day turns to night, and we slowly zoom in on our principal characters, dealing in a dialogue and action heavy undercover job, much in the "Thief" and "Heat" tone (dark and gritty).

Can you tell I'm excited? Love Mann's crime thrillers, and despite his personality, I'm generally good with Colin Farrell. He seems he could actually pull off some Don Johnson-esqe quips. I haven't seen "Collateral" or "Ray," so I can't pass judgement on Jamie Foxx, but with him being the hot-ticket right now, it can only mean good things for the new MV.

I can't wait!

I loved the TV show. I would go see this.

Michael Mann is the man! So yeah even if I wasnt a big fan of the series then I will acquaint myself with this one.

I always liked that show. Crockett & Tubbs will be played by contemporary A-list bankable Hollywood stars (Colin Farrell & Jamie Foxx). I'm getting rather tired of Colin Farrell. Apparently Hollywood producers and directors aren't.

I wonder if Edward James Olmos will reprise his role as Castillo? Other than Antonio Banderas and Andrew Garcia, I cannot recall any other Latin-American male actor. Maybe the film's producer/director Michael Mann (who also created the TV series) will twist things up, and give that role to an actress: J-Lo. Looking at the website, nobody's been cast yet: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0430357/

Posted by: B at February 18, 2005 08:42 PM

I think Benicio Del Toro would make an excellent Castillo. I also think this will be a great movie. But, Why do they have to shoot it in Long Beach, CA instead of Miami. Kind of takes the BL out of bling bling.

Posted by: MSC at February 25, 2005 01:58 PM

Who is casting for background extras? I want to be in the movie. Cheers, Dan the Eighties Man.

Posted by: Dan the Eighties Man at February 28, 2005 11:33 AM

Apparently you are all wrong. Robert Davi is scheduled to play Castillo, so there will be no J. Lo, or Benicio Del Toro. J. Lo...? Come on, what's up with that? I do admit, maybe Benicio would be good as Castillo...? Robert Davi, hasn't done too much work lately, as far as I can see, but he does have the same type of skin marks on his cheeks, like Edward James Olmos, and he can be pretty intense too, and devoid of any emotion. The other good news, is apparently Jan Hammer is being brought back in to do the music, so that will bring it closer to the TV show. I wasn't happy about them shooting in Long Beach CA either, but from what I heard, it will be shot in Miami after all! That's where all the neon and pastel art deco is, and that is a must for the movie's look!

im a huge fan of the tv show i hope that they have crockett driving a ferrari and weilding that badass bren ten

Posted by: mike at March 6, 2005 02:01 AM

Continent Check - Antonio Banderas is from Spain, as in Europe – you know, next to France and Italy - not Latin America. You may be confusing him with characters that he plays.

My next door neighbor is a set builder and is working on the movie. He is flying out to Miami in the next couple of days. I'm hoping to get some inside ifo and will pass it on if I do.

I think that the movie version is going to be totally awesome! I am not really sure about Colin Farrel playing Crockett though.. Robert Davi is a great replacement for Olmos. I really do think that Del toro would be great as Castillo, but oh well....If J-lo is in this movie I WILL NOT GO WATCH IT, Please do not ruin this classic by putting such a non-talent in this picture

I wholeheartedly agree I would not see anything that J-LOW is in

This is another attempt to get a message to Michael Mann to consider a subplot. I don't have his phone number or address, but there must be many Miami Vice fans out there who may be interested in seeing a 'side bar' of the following.

Don Aronow founded Cigarette Racing Boats in Miami in the late 1960's. Aronow named his company "Cigarette" after a prohibition-era rum runner.

Aronow was murdered in 1987 by unknown bad men. Some rumors have him tied to the FBI and/or the mafia and/or a sour business partner. A believable rumor has him being killed because his boats were fast and used by drug enforcement to outrun and capture drug runners. Did the mafia kill him so they could maintain tighter control? Did the drug runners take him out thinking it would be an end to the pursuit boats? Did the disgruntled partner tire of Aronow's strong personality and ego?

This all happened for real in Miami. I can't imagine a Miami Vice movie that doesn't embrace this bit of history. Cigarette boats are a legend. A bit of sadness come over me recently. Another boat manufacturer was chosen to build Crockett's go-fast boat for the movie. While Mr. Scism will build a very fine boat, the legendary Cigarette boat should be in the movie especially since the company is still in operation. Ask any die-hard Miami Vice fan or seasoned powerboater!

I'm just about getting sick and tired of re-makes. First, they tried to ruin Starsky & Hutch and now they plan a mockery of Miami Vice, probably the best TV show of the 1980's.
Original characters cannot be replaced, it never works. This is classic television that is best left in its time period. If you grew up in the eighties then you know what i'm on about.

Posted by: dicko at May 14, 2005 08:42 AM

Sorry Bad Jack the main boat used in the original Miami Vice was a Scarab not a Cigarette. Both beautiful boats I must admit.
Additionally, I can't see Colin Farrell as Crocket. I think the best fit would be Josg Holloway from the show "Lost" - he is a perfect fit.

SORRY YOUR ALL WRONG (THE BOAT WAS A CHRIS CRAFT STINGER.

Hi gang. I mentioned in my last post (April 1) that my neighbor was a set designer and was working on the movie. He is in town this weekend visiting his two daughters. I ran into him tonight and asked him for tidbits about what's going on on the set, so here goes:

1). Principal filming begins June 27th. They will be filming that day at a club in Miami called "The Mansion." Apparently, this is where Jamie Foxx has been doing alot of partying in the last several months while the cast has been on location. My neighbor told me that Foxx and Colin Farrel have been on set since April, "just getting into character", learning how to fight and undergoing weapons training, etc. He said that of the two, Foxx is the much heavier partier. He is supposed to show up each morning at 8 for target shooting, but doesn't usually show up 'till about 11.

2). There have been sqaubbles about $$ and billing. Since Foxx has a "new friend named Oscar", he has gotton hard edged about his fee and about billing. He demanded equal pay with Farrel (cool) and got it. He also wanted top billing, but since Miami Vice revolved around Crokett, he didn't get it. Both Farrel and Foxx are making $20 Million apiece.

3. My neighbor sees Farrel quite abit on the set but has not spoken to him. He said that when you get to that level, you really don't speak to anyone who can't do something for you. He said that Farrel usually speaks to Michael Mann or is on the phone with someone, but he says that Farrel, who is usually dressed in boots, jeans, and without a shirt, seems pretty normal.

4). He says that Michael Mann is an absolute control freak about the film. Apparently, most producers/directors delegate their authority on a film, but not Mann. As a consequence, the set designer and Mann have completely different views on what the sets should look like. It seems that they are no longer speaking and the Art Department for the movie is not speaking to Mann.

5). He says that the movie does not address Crokett's place of abode. Nothing has been built or is in the works about the St. Vitas Dance. Apparently, nothing will discuss where Crokett lives.

6). Filming may last into October. They are filming in Miami, and will also go to Paraguay, Uruguay, and the Dominican Republic in October, although a group of set desingers are leaving for Uruguay to begin scouting the day filming actually begins.

7). Mann has rented a house near the end of the causeway in Miami. Crokett's boat is docked in the water in front of the house.

That's about all I can remember at present. Hope this provides something usefull.

Hello there, I live in Uruguay, very close to Atlantida and Montevideo. Does anyone know if they are going to take in extras. I'm american and have been living in South America for several years and I am fluent in spanish as well as in english. I'm 19 and have watched the show and enjoyed the series. Any info is welcome.

Thanks
Brian

Posted by: Brian Schisler at September 1, 2005 06:38 PM

I live in Montevideo and go to Atlántida in the summer. I know they need extras to play cubans, so if you think you match, you can contact Metrópolis Films: [email protected]. Good luck!

Posted by: Mariana at September 4, 2005 06:16 PM

they chose atlantida (uruguay) to make it look like Cuba?....Uruguay is a fantastic place, I've been there a couple of times. I'm from the netherlands and I must tell you that uruguay is one of the most european countries I've ever been outside europe, that said, means that it doesn't look like miami or cuba. Anyway, i hope they get to do a couple of shots in punta del este a jewel in the atlantic.
ralph:[email protected]

Posted by: Ralph at September 6, 2005 03:40 AM

They're not going to Punta del Este, but I can assure you: Atlantida is a pretty nice place.

Posted by: Mariana at September 6, 2005 08:25 PM

There is a resemblance between atlantida and cuba. Most buildings are from 1950's or so

Posted by: Mariana at September 6, 2005 08:29 PM

I forgot to tell you that I went to Atlántida on Saturday and saw they were building a wooden house. We asked the security guard and he told us it was for the movie. There are some palm trees on the front, a big tent and a pair of containers.
Unfortunately some days ago there was something similar to a hurricane, so there are many fallen trees. I think by the time they start shooting this problem will be solved, anyway, I believe there are no trees (except for the palm)where the shooting is taking place.

To the guy who said he was afraid Vice would receive the same treatment as Starsky & Hutch -- this is a Michael Mann film!!!! Mann doesn't do slapstick comedy & he was the exec. producer for the original show, so to answer your Q, Vice will be gritty & ground-breaking like the original.
