Entertainment execs vote surveyed on British Film Industry

GordonBrown.jpg...and that's how you have the British Film Industry Mr Brown, by the...Who would you think to be the most influential people in the UK film industry? Well according to some 400 entertainment executives it's nobody in showbusiness at all but the Chancellor of the Exchequer!

The story in the Guardian at the end of last year talked of the survey carried out by Sky Movies which asked 400 top entertainment executives on both sides of the Atlantic four questions regarding the British film industry, and the results are:

Who has been the most influential person in the film industry this year?
1. Gordon Brown
2. Michael Moore
3. Jeffrey Katzenberg
4. Peter Jackson
5. Mel Gibson

What film has been the biggest disappointment this year?
1. Van Helsing
2. Sex Lives Of The Potato Men
3. The Ladykillers
4. Catwoman
5. Troy

What was the best British film this year?
1. Shaun Of The Dead
2. Layer Cake
3. Girl With A Pearl Earring
4. Vera Drake
5. Millions

Who is Britain's biggest international film star?
1. Jude Law
2. Hugh Grant
3. Catherine Zeta-Jones
4. Ewan McGregor
5. Sean Connery

Fantastic news for what everyone thought of as the best British film of the year, although surprised that Vera Drake is not higher, and what the hell is Sean Connery still doing in that list? Slap Gerard Butler or someone a bit more active in there, at least someone who finishes projects! Hugh Grant still number two? That list is messed up, totally.

However, I'm with the top five bad films, and the influential list does make sense, if a bit surprising in some areas. What do all you Brits and non-Brits out there think? Did they get it right? Is it a fair representation of the truth?

I agree with you Rich, Gerard Butler should be in the Top 5 list for Britain's biggest international star.

Yeah, there are some good choice up there, but some obvious missing ones. I can't believe some of the missing.

Glad you agree Simone, and I don't just mean for Phantom!

LOL @ Richard Brunton. How can you tell I was thinking of the Phantom? Men are very perceptive!

Of course it's not just of the Phantom, (even if he was very good in it!) I also heard that Butler did a good performance in the upcoming "Dear Frankie", and he is working on a lot other stuff like "Beowulf and Grendel", the Robert Burns story and is even in the running to be the next Bond. YAY!

Just this list makes the Scottish actor really fairly busy and should have been at least nominated in this survey.

Influential list seems right.
I dont think Catwoman was as much a dissapointment as a total disaster.
Shaun of the Dead is right on.
That film star list seems like its missing someone. Those Harry Potter kids are bigger than Sean Connery.

With all due respect to Mr. Connery, he is a great contribution to the industry, but let's just say that he has had his time, and it's time for others from Britain to shine.

If Gerard Butler should be at the top of everyone's list. He's a versatile actor, a powerful screen presence and he did an extrordinary job on Phantom. He gave the character dimension, humanity, passion and LOTS of sex appeal and sang wonderfully, using his voice to great effect to convey the emotions of his character. When you consider he did all this wearing a mask, often a cape, and horribly uncomfortable prosthetics I do wish he would be acknowledged for the really difficult job he performed so ably and convincingly. Dear Frankie, of course is at the opposite end from what Mr. Butler usually does. It is a sweet film and he plays his part with a subtlety only a truly gifted actor can convey. We need lots more Gerard Butler.

Until my girl friend dragged me out to watch "The Phantom of the Opera", I sing "Your spirit and my voice in one combined..."
Later I bought DVD and cassettes with all films I could get, where Gerard Butler's appeared. So, after "Dear Frankie" I cried. After "Attila" I was proud of this man, without special reasons. After "Timeline" I am sure, that it was good for me to divorce. After “Lara Croft…” I tried to forget my habit to look for another film with Butler. After "Shooters"... (did anybody watch "Shooters"?) I thought that unfortunately I understand not everything in the world... Right now I see Gerard's great potential, but not the part, which is worthy of him.

By the way, some times we love the image, which the real man makes on the screen or on the stage. Yes, he works hardly, almost becomes his hero. But, in any case, he is someone else; he is differing from his learned part. And would be too fool making love with myself looking to the screen.
I love Gerard Butler for his mind and character. He is very original, and that's fine. I have respect for him because he shows me the way of living after all. He teaches me to begin again from zero, and to change my fortune. Thank you, my big friend. I wish you patience, wisdom, and good luck.

Sincerely yours, Lena.
