Nicole Kidman leaves The Producers

NicoleKidman.jpgNicole Kidman has turned away from the remake of The Producers citing the time that would be required to learn all the song and dance routines in her hectic schedule. The BBC say:

Her reps say she simply wouldn't have the time to rehearse the intricate song and dance routines between shooting kitsch comedy Bewitched and Oz-set romantic drama Eucalyptus. Producer-writer Mel Brooks is said to be "very understanding" and the decision was made "amicably". Hmm.

Now, I could join the fray and suggest there's something in there, but Kidman is genuinely busy, and these routines do take a lot of time to rehearse, don't they?

Still I think that The Producers is set for big things, with a $45 million budget and the stage show crew in line with Mel Brooks, Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick, it's certainly going to be big. So I don't really feel it's lost a lot with the Kidman departure, it might just do it some good, there'll be wads more budget available for one thing!

Is this another move for Hollywood now, taking the stage to screen? What are we going to see next? Aha, another story...

They're remaking The Producers? I didn't know that, and I can't understand why. I mean... WHY? What's the point? It's not like it contained scenes that the technology of the day couldn't show.

Well I don't think it's such a remake as a bringing the stage show to the big screen.

(Picking up where Richard's comment left off...)

Bringing this play to the screen would allow a whole new audience who couldn't afford a kidney or a right arm to see it done on the stage done on the big screen.

There was indeed a film before there was a stage musical. It was shown in 1968, Gene Wilder co-starring in it before it was released as a stage musical in 2001.

I would have loved to see Nicole play Ulla.

It's simple why they're remaking it. The first movie was just a movie, but the second one is a musical.
