BBC's Film 2004 viewers films of the year

returnoftheking3.jpgThe BBC's Film critique program, Film 2004 (obviously that title will change next year!) has announced the results of it's viewers poll. This is always a telling poll and is a good indication of what the UK audience really has enjoyed watching during the year.

This year the winner was the third part of a trilogy (that'll be the final part then) that has won the award for each part in the past few years.

The two previous films in Peter Jackson's trilogy, The Fellowship Of The Ring and The Two Towers, took the title in 2002 and 2003 respectively.

The run down of winners are:

1. The Return of the King
2. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
3. Finding Neverland
4. Lost in Translation
5. Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban
6. Shaun of the Dead
7. Hero
8. The Incredibles
9. Spider-Man 2
10. Collateral

A very good list, and personally I am there with almost all of it. For me though number 3 and 5 are no shows in my top ten. In Neverland's case it's because I never saw it, and in Potter's case it's because I don't want to see it.

Looks like Shaun has had a nice push for its British connections though, it's lovely to see it up there I'm really not sure how it contends with Hero and Incredibles for me. I would see them above Shaun but it still in the listing. Definitely Sunshine and Translation that far up though.

What does everyone else think? Make sure when you post your thoughts or your top ten\five, that you mention what country you are from. I think that makes an interesting comparison.

Comments

Calling from America, here's my top ten list.

10. Garden State
9. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
8. Napoleon Dynamite
7. The Village
6. Tarnation
5. Sideways
4. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
3. Lost in Translation
2. Kill Bill Vol. 2
1. The Return of the King

Of course I haven't seen The Aviator yet (going Saturday) so that will (probably) bump one of the above off. FYI, The Passion of the Christ almost got on, but Garden State beat it for number ten. Yes, The Passion... sue me.

More on everyone's comments and ranking of Lost in Translation.

I have a number of mates who have all seen this film on the back of the critical acclaim it has recieved, and to a one, NONE of them liked it.

Everyone of them has begged me to keep clear of this life stealing film.

FYI

How sad.

well, lost in translation gets my "best cinema experience" of the year... superb film : only dodgy in the slight misunderstanding of the japanese language / culture which was a bit cringe-worthy but it no way overwhelmingly so...

the show on bbc for film of the year also played host to simon pegg who said his next film will be his "take on the action movie genre" and would be "set in the country side"...

fyi : "film" (the tv show in question) has been on the BBC for a few decades ... good show, but shifted around the schedules alot and sometimes hard to track down... its a shame jonathan ross doesnt get the opportunity to talk about more obscure films as he has an incredible knowledge and understanding of obscure / cult films...

9.) HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS
8.) BAADASSSSS! HOW TO GET THE MAN'S FOOT OUTTA YOUR ASS
7.) GARDEN STATE

Paul,

If every one of your mates disliked Translation, don't you think that makes it worth seeing and finding out if YOU like it? See what all the fuss is about... you may love it, you may hate it, but at least you'll have had the experience of watching it.

And Christopher... DOH! I don't know how in the hell I forgot about House of Flying Daggers. A friend of mine picked up a bootleg copy while at Cannes and even though the color was a bit desaturated, I thought it was an amazing film that should probably make it onto my top ten list. Thanks for reminding me.

Oh if only the girlfriend would allow it...oh, and of course John, although I think John would be easier to get round to the idea than the girlfriend!

I...ahem...have heard of some sites that review such things, obviously I've never visited them though!
