Flash Gordon Movie in Development

flashbordonlogo.jpgThere are some movies that get made these days based on old stories, shows or movies that make me jump up and say "yeah, that's a great idea". And then there others, like Flash Gordon, that make me yawn out loud and wonder why I don't have a job as a studio executive.

Director Stephen Sommers, the man who directed the two "The Mummy" flicks and Van Helsing, is currently developing a script for a film based on Flash Gordon, and really I don't think it's such a great idea.

I remember watching the old reruns of Flash Gordon as a little kid and getting sort of a kick out of them... but now... on those RARE occasions you can find an old rerun of the show floating around, it all looks and feels kind of silly and hokey. Even for it's era, it just doesn't do anything for me. The story isn't all that compelling, the characters not all that interesting and the premise not all that great. Unless a complete re-vamping is done where very little but the name "FLASH GORDON" is carried over from the old show, I don't see this getting very far. But maybe I'm wrong... it has been known to happen.

Sommers is perfect for this. If you're going to take a crap license to turn into a film, get a crap producer to do it.

I just watched Van Helsing last night, and while it was definitely watchable, I really exepected a bit more. Sommers is turning into another Paul Anderson (AvP, Resident Evil) for me. A guy who gets great properties to develop and then drops the ball.

A new Flash Gordon movie could be cool, but it really needs a broad vision and an accomplished director.

Oh come on. Am I the only one who will stick up for Ming the Merciless and Flash Gordon, QB New York Jets? That has got to be one of my favorite camp movies.

You don't need Queen for the soundtrack. Get The Darkness.
