Pierce Brosnan Still Wanted To Be Bond

BrosnanBond.jpgThis one caught me a little by surprise. For some reason I have always been under the impression that Pierce Brosnan walked away from the James Bond franchise. But his recent comments make it obvious that he was actually booted out of the part:

"I had a contract for four Bond films. ... I did them and told them that I'd like to continue. But suddenly, in the middle of negotiations, they changed their minds. They said that they weren't interested any more."
I find this all a little confusing. I'm not the biggest James Bond fan in the world, but Brosnan did a damn fine job in the role. I can't imagine why they wanted to go in another direction when they clearly never had another heir apparent ready to step in and fill the shoes. Dumb move if you ask me (isn't it amazing that they haven't).

What?! I swear that I read an article back when it was announced that Brosnan was leaving where he was quoted as saying "It's time to move on," or something along those lines.

While I really didn't like the last 3 Bond films, Goldeneye is one of my favorite Bond flicks, and Brosnan really did a bang up job as agent OO7.

Brosnan was a great Bond. I'd prefer him for any of the young, below 40 years, men, I've heard mentioned for the role so far!

But maybe they're going for some kind of Van Helsing, xXx like of film. Then I sure hope the next Bourne movie will be filmed as the first one (not like Supremacy filmed by a footpainter), since it was true to the spy genre.

I don't think Brosnan was the problem with the last few bond films, they just weren't great films.

I have to agree with cybermike seriously now, we have state of the art computer graphics, and the scene in die another day where he is windsurfing down the wave and it looked amazingly fake i was extremely dissapointed. When i saw that scene the whole movie was ruined for me! But that isn't Brosnan's fault.

James Bond 007 was written during a certain time in history when the world in general was very different. There was a tongue in cheek gloss about the dominance of the British Empire and the British men and women that represented it and the villains that it spawned and that's because in general the real world had a glamorized patina to it, a least for a certain class of people. That historical period bred a certain kind of man that would be able to play 007 as its' written and Sean Connery was that man and will always be that man.

That age no longer exists. But they keep trying to bring Bond into "the now" and it's just not Bond. Not sure it will either.

I think the Broccoli family is trying to recapture some of that gloss and fun so it's time to start with another 007. The series had just gotten a bit dour.

I read on Ananova back when talks were being had about Peirce continuing on as Bond that he was very keen. In fact, the quote that sticks out most for me was from Brosnan saying it was only a matter of negotiations at that point and once that was settled he would be good to go for a set of Bond flicks. He didn't suddenly say he wasn't interested. It was the producers who changed their minds about him. This is all according to the article, that is. I would provide a link to this article, but Ananova tood down their search engine awhile back.

And I was also disappointed in the CG on Die Another Day. It was cheesy, and the boy and I laughed and scoffed at it more than we enjoyed or marvelled at it. But, the funniest bit in that movie has to be when, armed with all of the latest spyware and gadgets, the most hitech tool they used ended up being a wirecutter to get through the fence. I thought I was going to fall off the edge of my seat from laughing so hard at that irony. And watching Halle in wideshots walking to bowlegged really turned me off of her. She walks like a guy.

The last four Bond flicks all mush together in my memory. I really cannot tell one from the other. I can tell you that Michelle Yeoh was in one of them, but I can't name the movie. Halle Berry was in a Bond flick? No shit? That's how indistinguishable they are, worsened by their "generic Bond movie" titles: "Die Another GoldenEye Tomorrow". They're like those Chinese food buffet restaurants where it seems like they randomly put together a couple of words from a list (that includes words like "red," "dragon", "panda," "super", etc.) to come up with a name. You could write a Javascript program to randomly generate a Bond movie title.
