John Woo is Bringing Us He-Man!

he-manDolpj.jpgHe-man was one of those cartoons that I loved as a kid. Oh yeah... looking back on it now it was pretty lame... and the new cartoon version sucks pretty hard too. Then there was the Dolph Lundgren version with a very young (and pretty) Courtney Cox. Oh wow that was terrible. But I must admit that news of John Woo bringing us back to the Masters of the Universe is pretty darn exciting to me. The good folks at SuperHeroHype bring us this:

Variety reports that Fox 2000 has set John Woo ("Paycheck") to direct and produce He-Man, a live-action film based on the characters in Mattel's "Masters of the Universe" line of action figures. Adam Rifkin will adapt the screenplay. Originally made into an animated series in 1983, the property was also adapted into a live-action film in 1987 called Masters of the Universe, which starred Dolph Lundgren as the hero and Frank Langella as Skeletor.
Oh glee. Yeah I know... this this will probably suck too... but I don't care! Now, if I can only get someone to do a "G-Force: Battle of the Planets" movie I'll be in geek heaven!

Oh dear God no. If this is where Woo's career is going from here then I'm afraid he is dead to me. This has "disaster" written all over it.

Hmmm....Hands up who thinks they are only making the film because they have cart loads of old toy merchandise rotting in warehouses throughout the US that they can shift off the back of it....

WOW...
I was a huge He-Man fan as a kid, never missing an episode and all.

It's great that someone like John Woo is taking on this project.

I can already imagine the doves flying out of Castle Grayskull, but at least it'll be a cool movie to watch.

I wonder who'll be He-Man though.

it will be hard to top the one from the 80s with Dolph Lundrigen as He-Man, but I can't wait....now if only they could some hoe incorporate He-Man diving through the air, firing two submachine guns at Hordack or Skeletor.....awesome

I'm going to take this with a huge grain of salt. Remember a few years ago when Woo was attached to bring a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie? That was also rather weird news and apparently is not happening.

I want to see Woo directing Hong Kong flicks again. Most of the stuff that Hollywood has assigned to him have sucked.

The comment about warehouses full of He-Man toys collecting dust may not be far off. There have been rumors circulating for quite a while that Mattel was going to give up on the new He-Man line because it never really took off like they expected.

1. The re-launch of MOTU included the best toys ever designed

2. Mattel destroyed the new line by releasing endless varients, limited secondary characters

3. Cartoon Network destroyed the new 'toon due to poor advertising, uneven air time and lack or marketing

4. Mattel's legal department practically shut down the comic book by limiting useage of characters

5. Mattel showed a 'sneak peak' of new figures, including Hordak at 2004 Comic Con, only to pack them away and became the black hole source of information

6. Mattel sucks...

Big budget, live-action (that stays TRUE to the source) would rock! As for John Woo's vision, who knows?

What I want to know is if they are going to censor the hot man-on-man action between Prince Adam and Man-At-Arms?

Posted by: PowerofGreySkull at October 5, 2004 08:14 AM

i hope not, it is an intergral part of the he-man story!

everyone knows they were flaming!! just look at those loin clothes, could you get any gayer? i mean, aside from casting elton john and richard simmons.

Hmm...seems as if a lot of people think John Woo's decision to make a He-Man movie is a bad idea, or that He-Man himself was a laughable cartoon. Well, I was a huge fan as a kid and I WILL go check out the movie if it's made. Besides, if they can make movies out of some of this stuff that comes from Japan (you tell me any MAJOR differences between Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Beyblades, etc.), then they can make a new He-Man film. Hey, I like anime also, but not everything that comes from Japan is necessarily good.

MORE NEWS TO COME FOR HE-MAN.

He-Man film is just a working title, the title will change to He-Man:Masters Of The Universe,
There will be more news on He-man movie project during some time in 2005 as we get it.
We know that Jason Lewis will be starring as the main character He-Man and Nicolas Cage who is making Ghost Rider won't play Skeletor,But if Vin Diesel is interstead to play Skeletor in the filmthen John Woo will sign Diesel to play the MOTU main villain.
Will John Woo get the ideas when
He-Man movie gets made in Australia?.
It might be a suggeston or not,but lets go with the frow.
Thank You All.

A new he-man movie whould be great, just look at what has been done with other heroes the past years.. Spiderman, X-men, Hulk and so on... sure there are a lot of the new hero / comicbook movies that suck... but He-man would definately be something I would spend my money on.

Posted by: fedluder at April 13, 2005 11:08 AM

oh yes a remake of masters of the universe but really i would like to see the follow up to the masters of the universe reason being on the original did you see skeletor pop out of the lava and say those famous arnie words ill be back that is exactly what he said if you have the original watch the very end after the credits have rolled and you will see for your self so please make a follow up with some of the original characters such as evil lynn, the sourcerer, he-man and skeletor.
