Dougray Scott Is The New James Bond

bond_generic.jpgVia Dark Horizons:

The Sunday Mirror reports that Dougray Scott has beaten an army of rivals including Eric Bana, Clive Owen and Ioan Gruffud to take over cinema's most famous role, that of MI6 agent 007 aka. James Bond.

Scott, 38, will be the seventh actor to play Bond on the big screen and is set to make his first appearance in the 23rd Bond film, due for release next year. The Scot apparently won his role after discussions with Barbara Broccoli, producer of the long-running spy series. She wants to return 007 to his film roots....

So how solid is this? On the one hand this is the British tabloid press (and the Mirror after all) which has printed many a rumour about who has been cast as Bond and there is no official confirmation or quotes from MGM/Eon sources. On the other they usually indicate someone is 'rumoured' for the part whereas this seems certain. For the moment, best be dubious until Eon comments.

This looks solid. In my opinion this is a great choice. I've liked Scott ever since I saw him in Mission Impossible 2 (horrible movie by the way). By staying away from a Major star, this will allow the new actor to really take ownership of the role, and for Bond himself to become identified with the actor. Good move all around... if it is in fact true.

21st or 23th James Bond?

Posted by: Dave at September 12, 2004 05:42 PM

To my knowledge it will be the 21st official 007 release.

Posted by: Rick at September 12, 2004 05:56 PM

I *really* hope they take this back to it's roots. To me, the Bond movies jumped the Shark when Moneypenny cracked a sexual harrassment joke aimed at Bond.

Yeesh.

Mission Impossible 2 was better than any of the Brosnan bonds, and the others come from an era where all action movies now look dull.

Anyway, I like the choice, I like the actor... but neither the Bond of MI series can hold a candle to Bourne...

brosnan was largely a missed opportunity for the bond films : only goldeneye was much cop and that has begun to look strangely dated... anyhow, its a fair choice if it is to be scott... i would have liked "my local hero" clive owen to have done it though : very underrated actor...

The Sunday Mirror posts a new Bond rumour every week, so I'm guessing this news is false. Weren't they claiming that Eric Bana had already signed on to be the next Bond, when Bana hadn't even been approached about the role. And Dougray Scott is an awful choice in my opinion. The man has zero charisma and personality, at least if his previous roles are any indication.

Posted by: Toni at September 14, 2004 08:17 AM

My first choice would be Jason Stathom, if they really want to skew younger and brasher. Clive Owen would be interesting as well.

The CIA had an opening for an assassin. After all of the background checks, interviews, and testing were done there were three finalists - two men and one woman. For the final test, the CIA agents took one of the men to a large metal door and handed him a gun.

"We must know that you will follow your instructions, no matter what the circumstances. Inside this room you will find your wife sitting in a chair. You have to kill her." The first man said. "You cant be serious. I could never shoot my wife!"The agent replies, "Then you?re not the right man for this job."

The second man was given the same instructions. He took the gun and went into the room. All was quiet for about five minutes. Then the agent came out with tears in his eyes. "I tried, but I cant kill my wife." The agent replies, "You dont have what it takes. Take your wife and go home."

Finally, it was the womans turn. Only she was told to kill her husband. She took the gun and went into the room. Shots were heard, one shot after another. They heard screaming, crashing, banging on the walls. After a few minutes, all was quiet. The door opened slowly and there stood the woman. She wiped the sweat from her brow and said, "You guys didnt tell me the gun was loaded with blanks. So I had to beat him to death with the chair."

Clive Owen, altough a good actor, is NO BOND! Bond has to be someone that all women want to bed and whom villians feel they have a worthy opponent. He's looks good in a suit (like he could stand up and take the microphone and sing his heart out) and he's gotta look good in shorts. He's gotta be BELIEVABLE that he can handle all kinds of gadgetry. He's gotta look like HE SMELLS GOOD. Like he's had a cologne made for him that only he can pull off. That's why Sean Connery was the perfect Bond. Clive Owen is so...shlubby-looking. Dodgy-looking. Jason Statham? A much BETTER-LOOKING choice than Owen and he's got a nice edge to him but he's a bit too back-alley gangster.

Dougray Scott looks like a VILLAIN. BAD choice.
Eric Bana? NO. Just NO.

To mean it's between Gerard Butler, Bruce Payne (from "Passenger 57" - I know, Bond should have darker hair but Bruce could pull it off) or Sean Bean.

I really gotta get a hold of Barbara Broccoli. We REALLY have to have a woman to woman chat. If anyone has here number PLEASE CONTACT ME!

Posted by: willun at March 21, 2005 12:15 AM

Daniel Craig would be the perfect Agent 007.

Posted by: Simone at March 21, 2005 05:11 AM

Anyone confused about who Dougray Scott is, should either watch Mission Impossible II (the bad guy - only person worth watching in the film) or should find "The Crow Road". And if you can find that on DVD, then let me know, 'cos I've been trying to track it down for years.
It's a BBC dramatisation of a book by Iain Banks and is well worth watching.
Scott would be the perfect James Bond - Jason Statham is just a lump of wood and should be burned and scattered to the winds for his lack of acting abilities. He should never be allowed to taint the gene pool.
Dougray Scott should also have been first choice for Parlabane, instead of James (Yellow Pages whore)Nesbitt - but that's another rant entirely.

Posted by: Graham at March 30, 2005 12:28 PM

Scott is an interesting choice, I would take a gamble on Gerard Butler too. However, I think Clive Owen does pip the post for me.

Let's be honest though, they were stupid to let Brosnan go, or if the rumours were true he was stupid to price himself so high.

Posted by: Richard Brunton at March 30, 2005 01:33 PM

Adrian is a better bond! He has so much more depth and look fits greatly.

Posted by: Joe at April 6, 2005 07:56 PM

GERARD BUTLER! GERARD BUTLER! GERARD BUTLER! GERARD BUTLER!GERARD BUTLER! GERARD BUTLER! He should be next Bond definatly!

CLIVE OWEN would be the best James Bond
but Jude Law could be a possibility at a push
I think Pierce Brosnan should stay he is undoubtably the best James Bond Ever!

Posted by: Lydia at July 22, 2005 02:23 PM

Sorry, but... who is clive owen? gerard butler? I think that Brosnan was a great Bond. But let´s give a chance to Dougray, he is handsome and he might be good. Hugh Jackman, he was the wolverine, but dougray was also named for do wolverine, and do you know who wan... forgive my english, this is not my oficial language, I´m brazilian! And I want to see dougray!!!!

Posted by: andreza at July 25, 2005 07:28 PM

hello brazilian person!
Clive Owen is one of the hottest properties in the british film industry. He is a brilliant actor and has stared in movies such as 'closer' and 'gosford park' both have been hits.
check him up on the internet he is suave, charming and soooooo good looking.
Dougray Scott is foul and really ugly he is not J.B material.
I'm English and i say Clive for Bond! ;*)

Posted by: Lydia at July 28, 2005 01:29 PM

I REALLY HOPE SOMEONE WITH SOME BRAINS READS THIS, THE ONLY GUY FIT TO PLAY THIS ROLE, AND WORTHY OF IT IS CHRISTIAN BALE1.I CAN'T BELIEVE
ANYONE ELSE WOULD EVEN BE CONSIDERED. HE;S GOT THE CLASS, STYLE, LOOK
SEX APPEAL. HE CAN RUN RINGS AROUND THE REST OF THESE SO CALLED CONTENDERS, JUST BECAUSE HE'S DOING BATMAN, THAT;S NO REASON TO CAN HIM, SHAME SHAME SHAME I CERTAINLY WON'T BE SEEING THE MOVIE IF ANYONE ELSE GETS THE PART.

Posted by: bondgirl007 at September 5, 2005 04:38 AM

I am happy others are naming Gerard Butler. The man was born to be Bond. Read the books and watch the earlier movies when Character was important and you'll see him as Bond. Also I think a great director would be Guy Ritchie. I believe the problem with the last few Bonds were the directors. Goldeneye was great, breathed life into a dead franchise, Martin Campbell is good but I would like to see Guy have a shot.

Posted by: crackerjack at September 5, 2005 02:03 PM

Wow didn't actually realise how gorgeous gerrad butler was til i watched phantom of the opera
clive owen or gerrard butler are good choices
whens the next film comin out?

Posted by: lydia at September 9, 2005 12:09 PM

At the rate they are casting it, never. It was so much easier when they cast Brosnan. There wasn't such a mess on casting. That may be a bad sign. With Brosnan there was no real question, they had wanted him for a long time. That says alot when everyone agrees on one actor and try to get him, in this case they have everything but the right actor. Campbell may get sick of casting and move on to another project. Who knows if Bond takes any longer we may yet see Orlando Bloom in the role.

Posted by: crackerjack at September 9, 2005 02:19 PM

I agree with you the way you view the issue. I remember Jack London once said everything positive has a negative side; everything negative has positive side. It is also interesting to see different viewpoints & learn useful things in the discussion.

Posted by: semenax at September 30, 2005 08:56 AM

GERARD BUTLER!!!! No contest!!! There is NO competition for this actor; he is in a class by himself -- as was Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart, Gary Cooper, etc., etc., all the way back to Valentino (No, I wasn't here then, but I read lots). These stars were class acts; so is Gerard Butler . . . see him in Phantom, Attila, Dracula 2000, Timeline, Tomb Raider, Dear Frankie, etc., etc. HE's a WINNER!!!!!

Posted by: Mary-Lou at October 12, 2005 06:30 PM

your a very wise person Mary-Lou. If I ran the world of movies Butler would be the only choice for Bond. Alas I do not and those who are do not listen to me so as per the rumors of the day we will see Daniel Craig as our new Bond. So be it.

Posted by: crackerjack at October 12, 2005 06:51 PM

GERARD BUTLER should have been the ONLY person to be considered to take on the role of James Bond - he is the only person with ALL of the attributes that a Bond MUST possess; and he has MORE of them. Plus, women all over the WORLD are going crazy over Butler. Need I say more! He is a No. 1 Box-Office-Attraction!

Posted by: Emilio Haire at October 13, 2005 07:34 PM

If we ran the world it would be Gerard and it would be great.

Posted by: crackerjack at October 14, 2005 12:38 AM

Only GERARD BUTLER possesses ALL of the special qualities required to be a James Bond. Sean Connery was the greatest of ALL the previous Bonds and only Butler could follow in his footsteps. Just consider: An actor that compels women (from all over the world) to fall in love with such a varied assortment of personalities as the Phantom, Attila, Dracula, a Stranger, an Archeologist, a Mercenary? (Tomb Raider), a Dragon-slayer, Lower-grade Seaman, etc., etc. -- has such tremendous box-office appeal that the public would be FORTUNATE to have him consider becoming BOND. Until Butler becomes Bond, I will see no future Bond flicks nor purchase the DVDs to give to friends. NO BUTLER/NO BOND!!

Posted by: Lulu at October 14, 2005 11:03 AM

Well, Gerard can not have everything, so let's give a chance to others. I love Butler more than Craig but I agree with Craig's casting as the new Bond, which is official now by the way. I am sure Gerry will still make it without the Bond persona attached to him.

Posted by: Simone at October 14, 2005 12:18 PM

AHHHHH
what possessed them to chose daniel craig
he is ugly and foul and ugly and blond
i mean you can't have a bimbo playing bond... he is meant to be clever and attractive but d.c isn't he is repulsive
ahhhhhh
bring back brosnan campaign!
