Nimrod Antal's Kontroll to be Hungary's Entry for Best Foreign Film Oscar

I have yet to turn up very much info on the films in this year's Midnight Madness program at the Toronto Film Festival - believe me, it's not for lack of trying - but I have just turned up this interesting note on Nimrod Antal's Kontroll. The film, which revolves around a group of subway ticket inspectors, has lready won the Prix de la Jeunesse at this year's Cannes festival and has just been named as Hungary's entry into the Best Foreign Film Oscar race. So apparently some film's got some serious chops to go along with whatever strangeness got it into the Madness program.

Odd bit of trivia? This film and Creep - which stars Run Lola Run's Franka Potente, incidentally - are both set in subway tunnels. And I'm pretty sure I spotted some subterranean sets in that Machinist trailer. Apparently this year's Madness is going for underground claustrophobia ...

i've only read bad reviews about Creep - I don't know, I still want to check it out (Franka Potente - come on) but Kontrol looks good from what I've seen and read (now with what your talkin' about too ya know). I was at the ryerson theatre yesterday - it's huge (1236 seats). There prediciting ALOT of talent there. I'm already making my list of things I need to see too - I think I'm taking more time off work now.

So, Kontrol is a decent film? Sweet. There is a festival here in Greece and Kontrol is in the list. I wasn't going to see it, but after reading it's about subway inspectors.. well, I always had a inexplainable fascination about them. Perhaps because they had written so many fines to me. (Balkanian films always scared me)

And Potente? I used to be a great fan of her. I loved Rent Lola, and I do believe she is a fine actor, but her choice of movies to work in has amazed me. Der Krieger + die Kaiserin was perhaps ok. But Anatomie? Anatomie 2? And don't let me get started about her hollywoodization. Bourne films and all.

Kontroll is a great movie! I absolutely recommend it to anyone! It was a major hit in Hungary and I hope that as many people as possible will be able to see it. An unsettling mixture of comedy, action, drama, and romance, very impressive.

I just got back from the Telluride film festival and Kontrol was playing there. I had to stand in line for an hour and a half to see it but tlet me tell you, it was the best movie i saw at the festival. Everything from the plot, character development, and cinematogrophy were all top rate. If anyone ever has a chance to see this i would highly recommend it. I actually got to meet Nimrod on a Gondola ride and he is a very down to earth and real person who was actually kind of a shy. This for me actually made the movie even a better watch considering i knew the director was not conceded. I highly recommend it. Here is what they put in the program at the festival:

This strikingly inventive and original debut film, winner of the “award of
youth” at Cannes, takes place entirely in a cavernous, artfully photographed
subway system in an unidentified Eastern European country. It begins as a
creepy, Stephen King-type horror tale: someone or something is throwing
people in front of speeding trains. But that element quickly becomes a
subplot as writer-director Nimrod Antal switches focus to a squad of ticket
inspectors—the lowest rung of their society’s bureaucracy. These idiosyncratic
comic losers are grunts in a domestic war to retain social control. The least
incompetent among these funny, melancholic and weird men is Bulcsu
(Sandar Csanyi), a memorable character whose destiny we come to care
about. As an investigation of post-Communist uncertainties, KONTROLL is
an attempt to meld social commentary with thriller-action film dynamics.
It succeeds to an impressive degree. –LG (Hungary, 2003, 105m) In person:

I had the pleasure of seeing Kontroll at the Edmonton International Film Fest and thoroughly enjoyed it. Even though I was fortunate enough to see a variety of great new films, Kontroll was our favorite, hands down. It was original, dark, well written with kooky but great characters and second to none acting, fantastic cinematography and a wicked soundtrack (that desperately needs to be put on disc for N. American distribution). I would highly recommend it and plan on contacting ThinkFilm to congratulate them for picking this film up and to encourage them to not only distribute the future DVD throughout Canada but to put the soundtrack out as well. If you see little else this year, try to catch Kontroll. You won't be disappointed.

Saw the film at the 2005 Miami Int'l Festival and loved it so much I bought the DVD. The cinematography is amazing. How can such an ugly place like a subway look so beautiful. The DVD is in PAL format but you can probably see it in your computer.

Viewed Kontroll at a theater in Raleigh, NC....finally. I have been awaiting a screening of it here for some time. It did not dissapoint. Despite fire alarms, stobes, and an emergency warning system going off three times in the movie, it was quite the experience. The strobes, etc. seemed almost appropriate. Great Film.
