Fantasia Festival Announce Their Award Winners

fantasia.jpgMontreal's Fantasia Festival has announced their award winners and there are a LOT of great films on the list, along with a couple surprises ...

The big winners on the critics' list were Last Life in The Universe, Shaun of the Dead, and The Uninvited. I've not seen The Uninvited yet, but it just vaulted up to the top of my 'to buy' list. I've seen both Shaun and Last Life and, though wildly different, they're both incredible films that really must be seen.

The big public voted awards went to A Tale of Two Sisters, Ex-Aequo, Shaun of the Dead, Haute Tension, and Cutie Honey. A Tale of Two Sisters is a really incredible piece of atmospheric, psychological horror that is in the current wave of Asian films that have been bought up by US companies for distribution and remake, and it is absolutely as good as the hype.

Check out the complete list of winners here - there are a lot more - and if you're the sort who's got money burning a hole in your pocket all of those links above will take you to various international versions of these films available on DVD. Make sure to double check region coding, though, to be sure that your system can handle them ...

Haute Tension?! It just goes to show how undiscriminating genre lovers can be. The only substantial reasons to love Haute Tension are prurient ones. In other words, morally askew ones. I'm not kidding.

This film has plot holes you could drive a truck through, is incredibly violent, and sexually immature in the extreme.

Know why I don't subscribe to Fangoria- because they make (andencourage their readers to make) no distinction between horror films that are worthwhile and films that happen to have some genre conventions. If it's got blood then Whoo-Ha!!!

Ask Bubba- I'm a huge lover of intense horror movies but Haute Tension is a disgusting exercise wallowing with flaws.

What about ONE POINT O? No one seen that? Seen that BUBBA?

Seems that ONE POINT O was also a BIG WINNER on the critics list! Do you hate it Bubba?

I don't know anything about it ... the ones I pulled off the master list were the gold, silver and bronze overall winners from the critics and publicly voted awards. Nothing more to it than that. Like I said in the post, there were a LOT of other awards given out ...

I see ONE POINT O got TWO GOLD from the JURY! GOLD INTERNATIONAL and GOLD BREAKTHROUGH. Haven't seen HAUTE TENSION but I hear mixed things about it.
