The Oscar Nominees announced
Well the nominations for the Oscars were announced this morning. Only a couple of surprises jumped out at me, the biggest of which was that Nicole Kidman was not nominated for best actress. The second surprise was that neither of the 2 Matrix films were nominated for Visual Effects. Besides that the list looks really solid.
The Nominees are listed below and my personal picks are bolded and in red. What do you think? Are you surprised by any of the nominations or those who were not nominated? What do you think of my picks?

Slight ROTK bias in evidence here :) It's almost impossible to see all of these films but I have seen most of them and therefore feel like I have some semblance of credibility in suggesting that your list might be a bit different if you've seen Mystic River, Triplets of Belleville, and City of God (all amazing), and in a negative sense Cold Mountain (Zellweger more or less plays a caricature of 'strong sassy Southern belle' type). Perhaps you have and still lean towards the few movies you emphasize (I agree with you re. Lost in Translation). My two cents

I believe tha Johnny Depp should win best actor. He deserves it. I think him not winning the Golden Globe was not right because Lost In Translation isn`t even a comedy.

Hey G:
What do you mean biased!?!?! To the best of my knowledge I didn't personally work on ROTK nor do I have any distant cousins who did nor do I have any money invested in the film. I just objectivly thought it was the best of the bunch. And by the way... didn't you notice that I picked it to loose in 2 of the categories I listed? Not just one... but 2 whole categories!I mean come on! SO why don't you shut your stupid mouth and go fill your cake hole with some of Day-Vuh's favorite casserole and get a life!
(you know I'm kidding right?)

That's it, you are permanently banned from my sofa.
(I'd say I'm kidding, but I'm not)

Crap, I guess we hafta sit down and fgure out exactly WHO owns the sofa. This'll Blow.

I own the sofa. I have nothing to back that up with, but I'm sure I can prove it one way or the other.

I'm sure I own something around here... ah yes, the kitchen table. That's it. Seriously. And I saw 21 Grams, thank you very much. Some very good character acting, not very coherent story.

here's the thing about the oscars. And in a way I can understand it, but it's still sort of frustrating.
You mentioned that the 2 Matrix films didn't get nominated for special effects -- and most people would simply see that and say "well, that's cuz they sucked." But the thing is, as far as EFFECTS go, the fact the a film was or wasn't enjoyable doesn't and SHOULDN'T make a difference. But sadly - in public opinion and hence in the Academy voting, it seems to.
- No ill-will against Julia Roberts or the makers of "No Man's Land", but I'm still ticked that Ellen Burstyn and Amelie didn't win an Oscar in their perspective categories for virtually the same reason.
Then again, none of this changes the fact that I'd like to win an Oscar of my own thank you very much.
