Casino Royale

After catastrophic 20th movie that was ridiculously cheesy, packed full of clichés and an invisible car, the producers decided to press the reset button on the franchise. This meant replacing Pierce Brosnan with a younger Daniel Craig and taking the Bond character back to his first ever mission with a grittier style that made the early Connery films such a success.

Having recently been granted his license to kill and Double-0 status, Bond is dispatched to Montenegro where he must defeat Le Chiffre in a high stakes game of poker. With much of the movie taking place inside the titular Casino Royale, around the poker table where the game gets ever tenser, a game of poker has never been more interesting.

21

Based on the autobiographical Bringing Down the House, 21 glamorises the story of the MIT Blackjack Team who successfully knocked off a series of Vegas casinos by counting cards. Starring Kate Bosworth, Lawrence Fishburne and Kevin Spacey (who also produces), 21 was a box office smash earning $157 million from its initial $35 million budget. There were initial fears that the film would teach audiences too much about the method of counting cards and would attempt to knock off a number of casinos themselves. Thankfully, the filmmakers deliberately held back most information about the method of card counting, meaning this movie wouldn’t make a good educational resource, but it is still very entertaining.

Casino

For many, Martin Scorsese is the Godfather of modern cinema and most of his best loved movies have starred Robert De Niro, in fact the duo have collaborated on eight separate occasions. Casino is the most recent of their collaborations, in 1994, and is adapted from the factual book by Nicholas Pileggi who also co-wrote the screenplay. De Niro stars as Sam Rothstein, a gambling handicapper enlisted by the Italian Mob to oversee the running of Tangiers Casino in Las Vegas. The events of the movie are loosely based on the life of Frank Rosenthal who oversaw the Stardust, Fremont, and Hacienda casinos for the Chicago Mob through the 70’s and early 80’s. the film also reunites De Niro and Scorsese with Joe Pesci from Goodfellas.
