Kingsman: The Secret Service Movie Review

Director: Matthew Vaughn

Writers: Jane Goldman and Matthew Vaughn

Genre: Action, Adventure, Comedy

Starring: Colin Firth, Samuel L. Jackson, Mark Strong, Taron Egerton, and Michael Caine

Matthew Vaughn has crossed the threshold and gained the prestigious title as one of my top 10 directors out right now. I’m a big fan of his style. It can only be described as “Contemporary Homage”. He stays faithful to the source material, but personalizes it in a modern and respectful way. The man has talent and I just wanted it to be pointed out. Now, on with the review.

Synopsis: A spy organization recruits an unrefined, but promising street kid into the agency’s ultra-competitive training program, just as a global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius.

I’ll start with the negative parts on this one, and there are only three. The first one is Valentine’s (Samuel L. Jackson) stupid ass lisp. I understand it gives the person character and grounds him into reality. But, the lisp was dumb and took me out of the movie from time to time. It’s okay to be different, but not that different. Secondly, the last fight scene could have been a tad bit better. It might be the only hiccup Matthew Vaughn has. All of his final battles are okay. Take X-men: First Class for example: the last fight with the main villain was with a quarter. It wasn’t that bad, but it could have been spruced up a smidget. Last, but not least, the violence … personally, I loved the brutality. Every head shot made me giggle like a four year girl. But, my excitement is not enough to blind me from the fact that this movie is ultra-violent, and some people might be even offended by it. The studio could have done a better job of informing the audience that it was Rated R.

Now, it’s time for the praising and believe me, there’s a lot of it. I really enjoyed this movie from start to finish. The action was amazing, spectacular, superb; plus, there was no shaky cam. I forgot how a “non-shaky” cam film looks like. I felt as if I was seeing fire for the first time. After the bar fight, which was done with class. Then, Vaughn took me to church!

In three minutes, he turns this church into New Jersey

Hands down, it’s the best fight scene of the year. I don’t know who Vaughn gets to do his fight choreography, but give that man an Oscar. I love the villains, an echo friendly nerd and a woman with blades for legs - you can’t make this stuff up. The soundtrack is kickass very enjoyable. The visuals are okay until the head musical, when you see it, you’ll know. It was simply beautiful. I don’t know what that says about me, but I’m just calling it as I see it.

The plot… was pretty average. There was no surprising twists or any deeper than life meanings, nor does it have to be. The Kingsman is a high-level popcorn flick that caters to even the most extreme action fans. I walked out the theater feeling giddy ( yes, I said giddy) with enjoyment saying, “I can’t wait to see part two.” It has a great cast, great music, magnificent action, and is a must see. It’s has a James Bond flavor with Kickass style, fun for everybody, I can’t recommend this movie enough. If you do nothing else in life, watch this movie. Treat yourself. Don’t mistreat yourself. You will not be disappointed.
