Going to the movies is a traditional date night for all stages of a relationship. Whether it be a first date or a thousandth date, the film a couple shares sparks an emotional response and a lasting conversation. Of the many date movies out there, here are five that I feel are the most suitable for the most versatile couple.

5. About Time

Director Richard Curtis is known for films about love. His list includes films that follow a similar theme such as Love Actually and Notting Hill but his latest film About Time is probably the most honest of the list. The film intertwines character development with the science fiction of time travel in such a way that produces a creative love story that most anyone can appreciate.

4. Crazy Stupid Love

Laughter is a key element in any relationship and Crazy, Stupid, Love is filled with laughs and love. Steve Carell provides his usual sense of humor and it flourishes alongside Ryan Gosling’s serious sex appeal as they form an unlikely friendship in a quest to rediscover themselves and their place in love. Older and younger couples will appreciate the laughable companionship between a younger playboy (Ryan Gosling) and a domesticated family man (Steve Carell) and all the conflicts along the way.

3. Away We Go

Away We Go falls into the romantic comedy category by its casting alone. John Krasinski (The Office) and Maya Rudolph (SNL) star as a couple about to have a child and in search of a place to properly raise their child. This film highlights the fear and struggle that come with the beginning of a new family and does so in a comedic yet heartfelt way. The highlight of this film is the journey to find their home with each setting having its own unique array of characters which push the main characters’ relationship even closer together. This is a great date film for a couple with an eclectic taste.

2. Garden State

Garden State is Zach Braff’s (Scrubs) directorial debut and based on this film’s critical acclaim, it’s a more than strong debut. Besides being a classic “girl next door” story, this film is also a story of self discovery. Most anyone can relate to the internal conflict of all of these characters and it’s this conflict that also makes the characters more honest and believable. This is a film that defines love for this generation and I would recommend for almost any couple.

1. When Harry Met Sally

When Harry Met Sally is one of those quirky must-see films that spans across generations. It provides perspective as to why women and men can and cannot be friends and the complications that come with testing those boundaries. By exploring a male and female friendship, you get a story told from two perspectives that keeps the film impartial when it comes to gender. It’s a road that most of us have been down when entertaining the idea of turning friendship into something more and with the talents of Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal, this film is guaranteed to be a reminiscent pleasure.
