Is it time for a new Wolverine?

— Posted by The "Superior" Anthony

For some reason when I saw this new photo that Bryan Singer shared from the set of Days of Future Past the thought sprung in my mind that it might be time for a new Wolverine. All I could see is that uncomfortable facial expression beneath the massive amount of hair. I love how Hugh Jackman has portrayed the character over the last 13 years or so but I think Wolverine can be the ‘James Bond’ of Marvel characters and occasionally pass the torch onto someone else.

Some of my thinking is due to some rumor I read that Johnny Depp was, at some point, offered the role as Wolverine for the first X-Men film but walked away from the project and juts picturing Depp in the role forced me to wonder who I would be interested in seeing ol Jimmy boy up there. In recent years a whole crop of new talent has been introduced to general audiences since the first X-Men film took the world by storm. Now that it’s been 13 years I can admit that there are more sides of the character that we haven’t explored yet and I’m not entirely sure that Hugh Jackman is the best man to bring them to the screen. Jackman never really portrayed the Wolverine that I wanted to see on screen but he created something that was unique, refreshing, and most importantly entertaining to watch. I guess I’m just anxious to see something… different.

If you had to re-cast Wolverine, who would you like to see in the role?

And to answer your question... Karl Urban. After Dredd, I think he can pull any tough guy role. Thats the only person that springs to mind...

'All I can see is that uncomfortable facial expression.' What exactly is that suppose to mean?

Pretty sure hes taking orders from a crew member behind the camera and listening to them?

If it ain't broke, don't fix it! Thats all I can say to this. We know that Jackman can bring Wolverine to the screen so why change it until theres a good reason.

@Dan_Bam For some reason I couldn't help but focus on that peculiar expression on his face.It's incredibly nostalgic to see Jackman back in that familiar setting but it also made me realize that this is Jackman's 13th year with Wolverine which is actually quite a long time!

Growing up reading the comics, I can easily imagine someone else playing Logan, and actually being more faithful to the character as written in the comic. I like Jackman, and I'd be fine if were always him playing the Wolverine, but I know enough to realize he hardly has a lock on the character.

I'll stop watching X-Men movies if they change Wolverine! Jackman is the best, I can't imagine anyone else then him!

author is an idiot. Logan is more or less ageless. unless they do the Old Man Logan arc, keep the same actor. He is Wolverine, not Doctor Who.

The Dev

Wolvie is more or less ageless. getting a new actor for him is dumb. unless they do the Old Man Logan arc.. yeah, keep the same actor. Seriously, you need to read more comics.

@The Dev

1) Wolverine is not ageless, just looks really good for his age.

2) I seriously doubt that you have read more Wolverine comics than me. Seriously.

3) You need to re-read this post. I didn't say Jackman doesn't look the part anymore, I said he's been playing the role for 13 years and someone else might be able to bring something fresh to the character. Hugh Jackman isn't the only man in the world who can portray Wolverine in the same sense that Christian Bale isn't the only guy who can play Batman. I agree in that he's a great Wolverine, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't recast him or Storm and a few other characters.

@Anthony_TMB @The Dev

As someone who had a large X-men comic collection as a kid, and knows what's what, I have to roll my eyes at the "you need to read more comics" comment.

Jon

@The Dev Yes! I agree with everything you said but i think they could even keep Jackman for Old Man Logan, which was an amazing storyline. And, yes...he needs to read more comics! Jackman will always be the best Wolverine!
