Academy Selects 75 Oscar Eligible Songs, Adele’s “Skyfall” Likely Winner
— Posted by Kenny Miles
The Academy announced Tuesday that 75 songs have selected to be eligible for the Academy Award for Best Original Song. Below is the press release with the list of songs and requirements:
During the nominations process, all voting members of the Music Branch will receive a Reminder List of works submitted in the category and a DVD copy of the song clips. Members will be asked to watch the clips and then vote in the order of their preference for not more than five achievements in the category. The five achievements receiving the highest number of votes will become the nominations for final voting for the award. To be eligible, a song must consist of words and music, both of which are original and written specifically for the film. A clearly audible, intelligible, substantive rendition of both lyric and melody must be used in the body of the film or as the first music cue in the end credits.
Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2012 will be presented on Oscar Sunday, February 24, 2013, at the Dolby Theatre™ at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live on the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries worldwide.
The song list is from prestige films as well as an unexpectedly diverse collection of movies such as “Act of Valor,” “Casa Mi De Padre,” “Chasing Ice,” “For Greater Glory,” “The Lorax” “Jeff Who Lives At Home,” “Joyful Noise,” and “Ted.”
Even though Katy Perry’s “Wide Awake” (from her concert documentary) Aracde Fire’s “Abraham’s Daughter” (from “The Hunger Games”) and “Cosmonaut” by The Bootleggers feat. Emmylou Harris (from “Lawless”) could be popular choices in any year, we cannot even comprehend ignoring Adele’s “Skyfall.” This will more then likely win the Oscar. If you fill out an Oscar ballot, put that one down!
From a ratings standpoint, the Academy would be VERY wise to have Adele sing the theme song during the broadcast and include this in the advertising and publicity. (Imagine if Arcade Fire and Katy Perry make the cut, they could have a Grammy like showcase.) According to Deadline.com, one of the major factors for the earth shattering box office success of “Skyfall” was brand awareness among women because of Adele’s song. The Academy better book her for the Oscars immediately!
Here’s the likely Best Song Winner:
