Warner Bros-based financing and production company Alcon Entertainment (“The Blind Side,” “The Book of Eli”) are in final discussions to secure film, television and ancillary franchise rights to produce prequels and sequels to the iconic 1982 science-fiction thriller “Blade Runner.”
Yikes, Alcon, can pretty much do what they like. Their rights are inclusive, however, they do not have rights to remake the original
At first that sounds like a crutch, because (for now, anyway) Alcon cannot remake the original film. But when you think about it, they don’t have to, While I am not interested in a prequel if it shows Roy Batty and fellow Replicants fleeing to Earth, there could be a story revolving around a younger Deckard (assuming he isn’t a replicant, of course) Holden (the Blade Runner shot by Leon in the opening reel of the first film) and Gaff.
Or not- because there’s other Blade Runners. The first film was clear on that. So, in essence, that could be milked. Okay, I guess I wouldn’t mind seeing an Off World colony, and I do want the big ad blimp back…but the best thing about the 92 film is that it made the viewer soak in the landscape. They might make it a little action oriented. They could have a mystery set in LA 2019. Or anywhere else on the planet, right?
I’m really thrilled over this news, Blade Runner is one of my most loved films. I’m very curious to see what transpires out of the deal.
I’m going to watch this like a big blue Big Brother eye.
