Gillian Anderson says X-files 3 still a possibility.

It seems that every few months some former cast member or producer for the X-Files talks about the possibility about another film sequel and while Gillian Anderson was out promoting Johnny English reborn she dropped the nugget that there’s still a possibilty for this to become a reality.

“I hope it will happen; there’s talk of it. I don’t know who’s writing it, but I hear there’s something going on,” she said.
And she indicated that there could be even more life in the series, saying she wants to do a film spoof of the hit Fox TV show.
“I’ve always wanted to do a spoof of The X-Files as a film,” she continued. “We talked about that for a long time, but maybe after three features we could get to do a spoof feature.”

A third entry and a spoof? I loved the X-files show and, don’t get me wrong, would be interested in another entry in the film franchise but… really? Seriously? I mean at what point do people look at a franchise and realize that the ship has already sailed? At one time I used to think ideally about the idea of TV franchises having long healthy film lives but this one is in the same ship as a Whedon Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie. Seriously, aside from internet geeks like you and I, how much interest is there from a general audience to see another return of a long dead TV series?

I’m not convinced there’s much general interest for television movies in general; I know Glee bombed, but I suppose that wasn’t really a ‘movie.’ It makes me wonder what’ll happen when they finish that Arrested Development movie they’ve been talking about for … many, many years

The first two X-Files films have been disappointing… well… at least I think they were both disappointed, I never bothered to watch the second one, and neither did anyone else if B.O. is any gauge.

The show over-stayed it’s welcome, and most people tuned out long before the series came to it’s conclusion. I think the show jumped the shark right around the time David Duchovny started feuding with the producers over syndication rights. You got the sense that the feud sapped all the creative energy out of the show, and while the budgets got bigger, the stories got thinner.

Slightly off topic, do you remember Brisco County Jr.? It debuted the same year as X-Files and was on in the previous time slot. X-Files was on Fridays at 9pm and Brisco was on at 8pm. Both shows had abysmal ratings but Brisco managed slightly higher ratings than X-Files in that first season. For some reason Fox decided to keep X-Files for another season and cancel Brisco County Jr. I always thought that was a shame because Brisco had so much potential. Unfortunately Brisco was an expensive show and for some reason it received a bunch of bad press as it was deemed ‘the most violent show on television’ in some Republican-led “family values” political campaign, which was absolutely absurd.

FOX had a good summer with X Men First Class and Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes. So why on earth they would choose to go backwards to make a movie based on a tv show that nobody cares about anymore. This is just another case of wishful thinking and die hard fans continuing to beat a dead horse so they can have their closure about the tv show mythology.
