The return of Percy Jackson

I guess we may be treated receiving a new Percy Jackson movie sometime soon as Cinemablend is bringing news that the crew behind the first film is preparing another.

Based on the young adult series of novels by Rick Riordan, the first movie was a disappointment in all fields, bringing in only $88 million domestically on a $95 million budget and suffering under comparisons to the Harry Potter movies. Just like the second book in the series, the sequel would be titled Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Sea of Monsters, and Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski have been hired to write the script. According to an unnamed source, Logan Lerman, who starred as the titular Jackson, will be returning, but director Chris Columbus and producer Karen Rosenfelt will not. Should things work according to plan the sequel could shoot as early as this summer.

I couldn’t bring myself to watching the first movie as it during a strong wave of popular books being fast tracked into movies to capitalize on the Harry Potter/ Twilight craze and this movie just got lost in the crowd with me. I may track this down to see if it deserves a sequel but can anyone tell me if I should and if they’re interested in seeing Logan Lerman return to the PJ role?

It wasn’t bad. And yeah while it wasn’t a success, I wouldn’t call it the biggest failure either. I guess it just didn’t get the pull it probably needed at the time. Still, the fact that they are even making this sequel is encouraging to fans of the first.

  2. Slushie Man says:

Yes! Out of all the fast-tracked cheap Harry Potter rip-offs, this one is easily my favorite and while the first book wasn’t anything to really write home about (And by extension, the movie), each book gets better and better as the series goes on.

i actually enjoyed percy jackson and am very willing to see another one.

  4. rick says:

out of all of the book to movie incarnations out there i felt percy was second only to the lord of rings trilogy… it had its flaws but i feel it deserves a sequel.

I didn’t hate it, I didn’t love it. I’m willing to give another movie a shot.

Of the slew of movies based on teen novels after Harry Potter, I would rate I am Number Four the highest. Although when I saw it,
I thought it was an orginal story. So Percy would come after Number 4

I was wondering if they were going to keep up with the franchise. While the first movie wasn’t great, it was fun. The books are fun, too. So I’m excited they’re continuing with the others in the series. We’ll see how far they go with these.

I am speechless from these comments.

I know every movie ever gets the automatic ‘worst movie ever’ treatment from trolls but seeing this movie with a friend, we both expected a fun, loose adaptation. We were appalled with the movie we witnessed. It truly was one of the worst movies I have ever seen. The acting was atrocious, the changes made no sense. The things they removed made no sense. The best parts of the book were missing. The dialogue was awful and the effects were laughable. I literally saw nothing redeeming in this film.

  8. MadMax_007 says:

It’s basically a teenage angst-riddled, modern-day, “Disneyfied” version of Clash of the Titans. I really enjoyed both movies, but way less so with Percy eventhough it was fun. But you should take note that I’m biased with my enjoyment of watching these films because I just LOVE greek mythology! So there’s my 2 cents

  9. Shadess says:

It wasn’t horrible but it wasn’t good either. I’d have to get some very good recommendations to gamble wasting more time on the sequel.

  10. Nicole says:

I read the books and loved them. Really was not happy with this movie and the changes they had made. Not worth it.

  11. Middleman says:

I’m thrilled they might make a sequel. I thought it was pretty
Mediocre kiddie fare, but my seven year old LOVED it and prays for another film.

  12. Ryan says:

Hollywood has certainly churned out worse, and with Columbus gone, maybe the next will be an improvement. Let’s not forget how bad the first two Harry Potter films were, compared to how good the later ones have been.

  13. rodeostud says:

NO. Just no. They screwed up the books so bad it’s not even cool.

  14. dogboy says:

i’ve been waiting for news about a sequel for some time, the movie was really fun, it was inevitable that it would be compared to other popular franchises but i hope that the series gets to shine on its own.

It wasn’t the best movie out there at the time, but it was good. I enjoyed it when I took a friend and my little brother to watch it (He loved it and hopes for another one; he is currently reading the books). Some parts were… messed up. I had read all the books (and they were really good), and my opinion was that the movie wasn’t good or bad, just needed more work. I am also hoping for another movie, and have been waiting for news.
