Tyler Perry Is The New Alex Cross

Tyler Perry has signed on to play detective Alex Cross, in a reboot of the film series that starred Morgan Freeman (Kiss The Girls, Along Came A Spider) according to Hollywood News:

Tyler Perry, the filmmaking genius behind films like Why Did I Get Married, is set to star in the title role in “I, Alex Cross”, based on the James Patterson novel of the same name.

It’s an origin story of how the character got his start. Rob Cohen (Dragon) is directing. As of now, there is no distributor yet, but my best guess would be eithr Paramount, who distributed the last two Cross films, or Lionsgate, who released most of Perry’s films. This is not only an interesting choice, but I think it is a good thing.

I’m willing to give Perry a chance in a thriller/mystery. I don’t know about other people though. The man needs other parts than Medea.
Don’t you agree?

“It’s an origin story of how the character got his start.” Are you talking about I, Alex Cross? The novel isn’t a story about Cross starting up, it’s about his niece’s murder mystery.

Yes, I’m talking about “I, Alex Cross” That is the book they are adapting. How close they stick to the book is another matter.

I’m willing to give Perry a shot as I think he needs to branch away from properties that he’s created himself. I’d like to see how well he can actually act in more roles. I thought it was a cool cameo when he popped up in Star Trek and like the idea of him, hopefully, retiring Madea.

I would LOVE to see him get other things going. So far it seems like Perry is a two trick pony. This movie will be a great chance for him to prove that he isn’t.

WTF?! This seems like a very bad casting choice. Idris Elba was supposed have this role, but now Madea has it. Maybe Perry will surprise us and be very good in the role, but I seriously doubt it.

I still don’t understand why we can’t have another one with Morgan Freeman … until Will Smith takes over the part :-)

Has anyone actually read these books? Alix Cross is a STUD! He is MPD’s black Jason Bourn without the memory loss and has a PHD! I could see Tylor Perry playing his hulking friend Sampson. Morgan Freman is too old, Will Smith has to much of an ego, Denzel Washington would be my only other vote cuz he can play that cool smooth intelligent role that Alix cross is. Idris Elba would def bring a fresh face to it to. Cant believe such a bad casting choice.

Man, you hit it on the mark!! My mom and I are HUGE fans of this series and have always said that Denzel would be perfect. Looking at Tyler Perrys pic on this sight I was picturing Sampson as well. Bad choice for Det. Cross.

MADEA!!!!!WTF NOOooo. I was exited at first but now..its all F…ed up.. Idris Elba MUCH BETTER choice!!!!

  8. Melanie says:

How sad. :( I love Idris Elba. I was waiting for this!

  9. Thedra says:

I think I’d rather see Idris playing Alex Cross. He looks more intense and more serious than Tyler Perry. Maybe it’s because of Perry’s Madea background…I just think Idris can play all of the Alex Cross personalities - serious, intense, tender, loving, lonely, hurt and angry at times. I’d be pleasantly surprised if Tyler can pull this off.

This idiot better not be playing Alex Cross… let him play old women and wife-whipped men… NOT Alex Cross… Either let Morgan Freeman do it, or give it to Will Smith, those are the only two black guys in hollywood who could pull this character off. Ok… Denzel could do it. I’d be ok with that too.

Where’s Denzel when you need him?
