Cameron Vs. Piranha 3D - Round 1

A few days ago, Oscar winning director, James Cameron somewhat slammed Piranha 3D, with his recently published disparaging remarks. Cameron, lord of 3D movies thanks to Avatar, talked about the new 3D wave, and compared it to the old 3D dead wave. Here’s what has stirred a 3D pissing match.

IGN reports:

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Cameron said of Piranha 3D, “I tend almost never to throw other films under the bus, but that is exactly an example of what we should not be doing in 3D. Because it just cheapens the medium and reminds you of the bad 3D horror films from the 70s and 80s, like Friday the 13th 3D. When movies got to the bottom of the barrel of their creativity and at the last gasp of their financial lifespan, they did a 3D version to get the last few drops of blood out of the turnip. And that’s not what’s happening now with 3D. It is a renaissance — right now the biggest and the best films are being made in 3D. Martin Scorsese is making a film in 3D [Hugo Cabret]. Disney’s biggest film of the year — Tron: Legacy — is coming out in 3D. So it’s a whole new ballgame.”

Oh oh. I understand what Cameron is trying to say, but I don’t think it’s a good move. Not even that, I don’t think that’s a gentleman’s move. I really like Cameron’s movies and his directorial style, but you can’t go on slamming other people/directors/producers trying to make their own projects. Yeah, maybe they don’t have endless pools of money, but they are trying to entertain people and make money too remember.

Do you think he’s right? Do you think this will stir up controversy?

he’s not right, but it’s true, don’t cheapen 3d if you want to make money,

  • mikescottl

id rather see this then any thing remotely close to meet the Spartans.. just sayin

  • Gil

tommygunn, you’re not alone. Avatar being a pile of shit is a fact of life. I think the last good movie Cameron did was True Lies.

  • fullmetal_medji

Wow. James Cameron really is an asshole.

Having an opinion doesn’t make you an asshole.

He thinks that a movie like Piranha 3d is only using the 3d thing for gimmick. I don’t think he is wrong.

At FanExpo this last weekend they had a display for Piranha 3d, and it was all about trying it out in 3d, and nothing about the movie itself.

wow … James Cameron has some balls. i might be alone on this one but i found Avatar to be the biggest pile of shit i have seen in a long time.

i laughed when he won best picture/best director at the Golden Globes. the effects were amazing, but the story was unoriginal and the whole thing to me was an overly pretentious waste of time by a film maker who is over the hill.

Terminator: classic, Aliens: classic, you can list Cameron’s filmography from the 80’s into the 90’s and he has classic film after classic film under his belt, but he’s done. He was a visionary and he revolutionized sci-fi/action, but once again, Avatar was dog shit and he’s lost his way.

to slam any film after Avatar and having his next couple of films apparently be Avatar 2 and 3 is bush league of him, because you know what? if you’re gonna talk shit you should first look in the mirror.

maybe i’m in the minority on this one, but fuck James Cameron.

    • Bigsampson

You are not alone just in the minority. As for James having balls…I agree just not on this topic…he has balls because he is a trendsetter. P3d was a crap hack movie straight up.

  • Rob D.

I think he is absolutely right. Piranha 3-D is the epitome of the 3-D gimmick.

I’m not a fan of 3-D as I see it as nothing more then a cheap way to charge more. I still don’t think 3-D is “there” yet to be considered the next best thing in entertainment. Maybe once we lose the glasses and it stops making the movie look fuzzy or blurry. On top of not making my eyes and head hurt.

I see the “value” of having it for movies like Avatar and Wonderland. But when movies like Piranha and Step up or whatever its called starting using it. It cheapens the effect. Changing the peoples view and they will relate that to quality films like Avatar. It reminds me of the Home Improvement/Tool Time 3-D episode. Where they shot tennis balls towards the screen and moved a huge sub sandwich back and forth. When quality movies do it right. It can improve the experience. But when shit movies use it as a gimmick to get people in the seats. It ruins it and could tarnish the effect.

Anytime he does a interview I am sure they always ask about the current 3d movies. Maybe he tries to avoid saying his opinion, but if you get asked the same question enough, I’m sure you will answer once.

  • Slushie Man

Um, this is really old news. The producer of Piranha 3D has already fired back a rebuttal statement two days ago.

      Saludos Slushie Man,
I know, I was just setting up the follow-up story :)
      Cheers!
