Shymalan The Movie

Posted by Rodneyon 08. 09. 2010in News Chat

When people saw preview trailers of Devil, they thought it looked pretty interesting - until they saw who wrote it and it was all over. This is not a new occurance, and M.Night Shymalan’s films have declining in popularity the more he makes.

College Humour looks at a new (fake) film that explores why. And yes… there is a twist.

I really do feel bad for the guy, but he took one storytelling technique that was incredibly well placed and turned it into a gimmick and a running gag. He really needed to get away from “the twist” endings. Its all he seemed to have going for him.

Hopefully Devil is better and restores some faith and ability in the guy who managed to bring us Sixth Sense and Unbreakable.

I’m no Shyamalan lover but lets be a little honest here.

    1. Devil wasn’t written by M Night, it’s concept was originally conceived by M Night. It was written by Brian Nelson who wrote 30 Days of Night and Hard Candy previously.

    2. The Last Airbender was a financial success more so than any film since Signs. Here is the box office data.

    Wide Awake $95,875 $305,704
    The Sixth Sense $26,681,262 $293,506,292
    Unbreakable $30,330,771 $94,999,143
    Signs $60,117,080 $227,965,690
    The Village $50,746,142 $114,197,520
Lady in the Water $18,044,396 $42,285,169
    The Happening $30,517,109 $64,506,874
    The Last Airbender $40,325,019 $131,178,978

Now, if you mean critically? Well, then yeah.

Either way, I just thought I’d point this out.

i keep telling people that get so angry at this movie that Shymalan had almost nothing to do with it…he thought up the idea and paid for it to be done…thats it. and i hate the fact that people are completely dismissing it just because he had something to do with it, that doesn’t mean its going to be bad, every movie has the chance of it being good no matter who is in it or who directed it or who wrote it.
