Del Toro talks Haunted Mansion Attraction

Guillermo del Toro is a huge fan of the Haunted Mansion. No, not the Eddie Murphy comedy but the Disneyland attraction on which it was based.

While reports yesterday were saying he would be Producing a new version of the film, it seems that’s not quite true. He is helping them reimagine the attraction at the park.

/Film quotes Guillermo del Toro

I would love to say we are doing the movie, it’s live-action. It is going to be in 3D. And we’re making the Haunted Mansion the most haunted place on Earth. And we are doing it by being true to the spirit and the art and the aesthetic of the original Imagineers that created the mansion.

We are not returning Eddie Murphy’s calls.

And we are not making it a comedy. We are making it into an e-ticket ride. We are going to make it scary and fun at the same time. But the scary will be scary. And to me, the mansion has to become the haunted house movie that a generation remembers and loves after being created by us. We are doing this by reintroducing… the mythology in the mansion will be done, and this is really for the hardcore fans, it is going to be created around the character we are reintroducing into the tale. And it is my biggest hope that we can reintroduce it right. And that is the Hatbox Ghost.

So the ride that inspired a feature film is now becoming a feature filmmaker’s ride? And who better to make this ride fun and scary at the same time than Del Toro.

Del Toro has a vivid and fascinating imagination. He can do anything from the whimsical to the truly terrifying. For him to take on the Haunted Mansion is not only a good idea, it is the best way to move forward by attaching someone with the most respect and integrity for the property.

I don’t know how that could be more clear.

I understood that this was about the ride, but the quote has some misleading parts is probably what sekngucing meant. I can relate.

But Del Toro redoing the ride is going to be great.

Maybee the attraction will have some film footage by the Toro-Man in 3-d to go along with the ride.

that’s what I took from this

Oh crap my pants yes… If the hatbox ghost is able to be part of the story finally… I’d be the happiest little mouseketeer this side of the Rockies.

Sorry Rodney, but you’re misreporting this. It’s a movie, not another ride. It’s a new feature-film that will be based more on the original story behind the Haunted Mansion ride than the Eddie Murphy disaster. If you look at the press release on the same page that you linked too on /Film, you’ll see that:

“Guillermo del Toro surprised the 6,500 fans gathered today at Comic-Con with the announcement that he is currently developing a new film for The Walt Disney Studios based on the classic Disney theme park attraction, The Haunted Mansion.”

  5. Ryan says:

Bah! I love that ride… why not just make a new Haunted Mansion? They used to have that Alien Encounter at Magic Kingdom that *really* was scary, and then they replaced it with a stupid Lelo and Stitch ride… that blew. If they wanted something scary and good… they should bring back that Alien Encounter.
