Paul Reubens joins The Smurfs

It seems that Paul Reubens has joined the Cast of the Smurfs, and while they wont tell us who the Smuft he is playing, I think he really should be the voice of Brainy Smurf.

But that role has already been cast.

Ramascreen gives us the cast so far:

THE SMURFS voice cast:
Anton Yelchin will voice Clumsy Smurf
Jonathan Winters will voice Papa Smurf
Katy Perry will voice Smurfette
Alan Cumming will voice Gutsy Smurf
Fred Armisen will voice Brainy Smurf
George Lopez will voice Grouchy Smurf.

Playing live action roles:
Hank Azaria will play the Smurfs’ nemesis, the evil wizard Gargamel
Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays will play an expectant couple whose lives are turned upside down when the Smurfs cross over from their magical village to New York City.
Sofia Vergara will play Odile, Harris’s boss, a cosmetics executive.

While I am a little disturbed that The Smurfs are not being portrayed as medieval, and that Jeff Goldblum isn’t Gargamel - this is quite the cast.

Just like the Transformers, I worry that this will have too many “people” in it. There should be one person, Gargamel.

The rest, Smurfs.

The casting gets better or worse pending your point of view. EW is reporting:

“Saturday Night Live‘s Kenan Thompson and Fred Armisen as Greedy Smurf and Brainy Smurf, respectively; The Office’s B.J. Novak as Baker Smurf; and comedian Jeff Foxworthy as Handy Smurf. They join Pee-wee Herman himself, Paul Reubens, who, as previously reported by Deadline, will play Jokey Smurf. Also lending their voices to the little blue creatures are Wolfgang Puck — playing none other than Chef Smurf — and veteran character actor Gary Basaraba as Hefty Smurf. Star Trek’s Anton Yelchin will voice Clumsy Smurf. The rumors that Quentin Tarantino and Michael Cera are joining the cast are not true.”

What Rumors?!? Also, if they have a Greedy Smurf, why do they need a Baker and Chef Smurf?

A lot of people are hating on this movie, but no one can deny that this cast is pretty amazing. Hopefully all this talent translates into a good film. I agree, Im not really digging the Smurfs take Manhattan angle, but we’ll see. Maybe I’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Why am I not excited about this?

I also agree, they should’ve done it in medieval times as magic plays a part in many of the stories. I just hope the story doesn’t suffer as we’ll be subjected to Smurfs getting exposed to modern inventions such as an Ipod etc, like the chipmunks.

I’m happy they got Hank Azaria, I think the guy is under-rated and a bit of a chameleon. I think he could play a bumbling wizard very well.
