Segel and Stoller bring us The Greatest Muppet Movie of All Time

By Rodney - February 10, 2010 - 12:53 America/Montreal

The latest effort to put the Muppets back up on the big screen is in fact being written by Nicholas Stoller and Jason Segal and officially has its title!

Formerly the Cheapest Muppet Movie ever made will now be The Greatest Muppet Movie of all Time. Gee, with a title like that you are not setting the bar too high are ya?

And now the synopsis for the film is online thanks to The Film Stage

The Greatest Muppet Movie of All Time is about Gary, Mary, and Walter (a man, his girlfriend, and the man’s life-long nondescript, brown puppet best friend) getting the old Muppet gang — now retired entertainers known for the same Muppet show we know them from — together to save the TV studio that the original show was shot in. A villain, Tex Richman (nice name, on par with Doc Hopper), bent on drilling for oil underneath the studio, is due to take over the studio in weeks and the only way to stop him? Putting on a show that draws ten million viewers.

It is an appropriate angle for the Muppets. Its been some time since we have seen a feature film by this crew, and if this is a hit, it could revive the franchise that has quietly been over run by special effects and bigger production films.

So appropriately the plot is about the Muppets staging a comeback in a film that could be a comeback. I just worry if they do follow up this film, will it be called The Even Greatester Muppet Movie?

I can’t wait to see what they do with it!

I dont like the muppest, however i dont hate them either, but a fact that segel is working for this movie puts me in the edge of seeing this movie.
Im a huge Segel fan, he is hilarious, so i will so give this movie a chance because im expecting a good work from segel.

I’m not too crazy about the premise. Aside from the fact that the Greatest Muppet Movie was The Muppet Movie, call me unimpressed.

Consider: are the “old muppets” Kermit, Fozzie Bear, Animal, Miss Piggy really that retired? There was Muppet Christmas Carol a few years ago, the recent commercials that tied in with Home Makeover etc. What’s this ‘retirement’ garbage? Is Gonzo in an old muppets home?

    • Rodney says:

Muppets Christmas Carol was in 92. Just sayin.

There have been more recent Muppet films, but that wasn’t one of them.

Retired seems to imply “from their old show”. Their movies and events seem to revolve around events outside their show.

Sounds awesome! Segel, Muppets, Oil Tycoons, what’s not to love?

  4. Jason Stanley says:

Actually looking forward to this one! I’m pretty biased when it comes to The Muppets as its something I’ve grown up with so to see another film (with hopefully a better storyline) come along will be great to show off to a new generation.

Plus The Muppets seem to be getting a decent following on Youtube at the moment. Very clever marketing plan for a big comeback methinks!

  5. SlashBeast says:

They should still make The Muppets Go to Hell.

    Otherwise, I’m down with this.

  6. Caroline Porter says:

The lovely thing about the muppets is that they charm in whatever film/show they’re in. You can’t possibly put them into retirement (a.k.a. a prop closet) because they’re timeless and terribly entertaining!
It’s good to see some classic characters being brought back to the big screen. It seems they disappeared after Muppets from Space and they could use a “Greatest Muppet Movie” to renew the spirit of their 80s films and Christmas Carol.

What made the original Muppet films awesome were the stories and the multiple cameos that came with them making them cool for all audiences, I grew up on the show and was inspired by Dr. teeth and his band..Animal especially( I play drums)..and the surrounding cast was top notch..
Hopefully they can come back and get this new generation in line..

Segal is the only question for me really. He’s pretty funny and I liked him in Freeks and Geeks and with the surrounding Apatow clan BUT his solo venture had it’s points but mostly fell flat for me…

    well see.

  8. Justin says:

I love the Muppets and all but I seem to love them more when they’re doing adaptations like Christmas Carol (best version of it ever FTW!) or Treasure Island. Still I look forward to seeing them again on the big screen.
