Quinto to take 2 Year Leave from Star Trek

Zachary Quinto has made a public declaration that he is stepping away from all things Trek for at least 2 years to pursue his other interests.

Scifi Mafia says:

After starring in J.J. Abrams reboot of Star Trek in the iconic role of Mr. Spock and supplying his voice over talents for the Star Trek: Online MMORPG for Atari and Cryptic Games – Zachary Quinto has said that he’s going to be stepping away from all things in the Trek universe for awhile.

Quinto said in a recent interview,

“I’m stepping away from Star Trek for at least two years, no movies, no conventions, no anything for a while.”

Well considering there is a June 29th, 2012 release slated for Star Trek 2, I imagine his “two years off” might just be from the public eye.

Clearly he will have to return to work on Star Trek for his role in the sequel before two years if he plans to be in it. But it will be pretty close to 2 years before we see Quinto in the ears again, so its mostly accurate.

He does love the fans, and was an inspired choice for a young MrSpock. I don’t think anyone has to worry about him NOT doing the role. He just said he is taking a break for 2 years. He didn’t announce that he never would play Spock again.

Not so cool for ST fans.

    • Rodney says:

Why? He didnt say he wouldnt ever play Spock, just that he was taking a break from promoting and appearing on behalf of that character until the next film.

  2. James(haz) says:

    THIS IS BULLSHIT!

    quinto IS spok!!

    • Matt Keith says:

Well, if your going by the movie both him AND Nimoy were Spock. Sorry, in the mood to be a smart ass today.

    • Rodney says:

And he still will be. No one said otherwise.

    • James(haz) says:

      Rodney

Im very confused and im pretty sure you get this

      so:

Are they going to film this thing around him? I didnt know they were planning to start filming in TWO freaking years, seems like a while

      • Bernardg says:

like Rodney said, taht mean Zac will be absent in PR dept as the character Spock, not from the movie itself, which still be at least 2 years before premiere. Wise move i suppose, so he will not getting bored playing Spock

      • James(haz) says:

        oh…

        ok?

        lol

        i mean, actors do that…

      • Rodney says:

Exactly. Clearly he will be involved with Trek before two years is up considering that two years from now Trek will be entering post production and he will already have been on the set for some time.

      • Chris says:

I guess where Quinto says, “NO MOVIES”. I’m pretty sure that means filming in character….unless he was kidding

  3. thematticus says:

Sounds like the guy didn’t realize what he was signing up for.

  4. 420BAND says:

probally trying to bump his income…

    if you dont ask then…..

  5. Brendan says:

Wow, obsolete much? This has already been debunked as a out-of-context sound bite. Quinto posted on his blog he WILL be involved in the next movie and said it was taken out of context.

    • Brendan says:

      From his Twitter:

“What i meant was that in the meantime i won’t be making appearances related to the franchise or doing auxiliary projects in trek universe.”

    • Rodney says:

Wow, read more than the title much.

That is pretty much what I just said in the article.

      Thanks for coming out.

      • Brendan says:

Actually I read the title, the first paragraph and the entire quoted area, thought that would be enough…

I forgot about the whole “exaggerate the title and lead to entice people to read on and then redact pretty much everything said before it” tactic of blogging/news.

      • Rodney says:

That isnt a “tactic” its what he said.

He also elaborated which I speculated and clarified in the article.

But really, I sometimes write interesting stuff - you should give me a chance!

      • Darren J Seeley says:

Rodney, since someone happens to agree with you and find things that help clarify things, why sound off the sour grapes?

      • Rodney says:

        It was sarcasm Darren.

I just didnt care for his assumption that the title was some sort of tactic.

    • WholeBlack says:

…stepping away from all things Trek for at least 2 years to pursue his other interests…”

Made perfect sense to me. Don’t know why everyone is not comprehending the sentence structure. He said “at least 2 years.”
Which means in two years time he will join the cast of Star Trek again. If he wasn’t coming back, he would said something along the lines of “stepping away from all things Star Trek for good.”

  6. 420BAND says:

Cant blame him, those conventions can get a little rough..

  7. Darren J Seeley says:

    .
I’m okay with it if Zac Quinto wants to take some time to go after other projects/other things and not focus on Trek press for a few years. He’s under contract for Spock, he’ll be back.

Besides, most of the actors are kin of taking something of a one and a half to two year break from Trek, are they not? There isn’t much of a script, so there really isn’t much to discuss yet anyway.

    Correct?
    Move along.

  8. RB says:

This is probably more of an edict from his management team than anything. They probably don’t want Quinto, who looks to have a promising career ahead of him, to get typecast or only known for Trek. I’m sure it’s just about him keeping a low profile with Trek and not abandoning Trek altogether for the next 2 years.

I hope JJ and company have a 3 movie plan for Trek. Otherwise, I have a feeling a lot of the cast will bolt after a 3rd contracted movie. Saldana’s career is red hot, and my guess is Chris Pine won’t stick around too long, either. I know you could just re-cast again, but I’d hate to see them do that.

    • Ryan says:

Given how well he’s already done with Heroes, I think it would be *very* hard for him to be typecast as Spock, at least if he’s proactive in looking for other roles.

  9. Chris says:

I guess he must feel overwhelmed by his success right now and the whole Star Trek Fandom. I think its a good idea for him to take a break.

  10. Truman Jergens says:

He’s contractually obligated to be in the next movie, so don’t worry about that.

  11. Ryan says:

From a PR standpoint, I don’t get why he makes this kind of statement publicly. First, he bungled it, making it seem like he was taking a break from all things Spock — including filming. Then he had to take that back a bit, because obviously he was going to do the next film — but in the process, he turned it into a much bigger story.

If he just doesn’t want to appear at the conventions or do more spots for Cryptic, making the Star Trek MMORPG, that’s what you have agents for… to politely tell these people no. Making it public could only upset fans, which is probably not what Quinto would have wanted to do. At the very least, he shouldn’t have defined the length of his break — if he wanted to be open and honest, it probably wouldn’t have just hurt him to say, “I’m taking a little break from all the PR stuff,” and if anyone asked how long, “I’m not sure.”

    /facepalm

    • Rodney says:

He was excited about doing other things. He has his own production company now too, so its not just acting that he is dabbling with.

I dont think its an issue of typecasting. His career is relatively young and he is getting into new things, and just wants to make time for them all.

The statement was just saying he cant do all those other things if he is doing Trek related stuff at the drop of a hat.

  12. Barrett says:

Why is he complaining about getting such a major role? Is he afraid of being typecast?

    • Rodney says:

      Who says he is complaining?

He has other interests he wants to focus on, so he is taking a break from his involvement with Trek.

  13. Robb Wo says:

I get the whole breakdown of his explanation and all that, but I’m amazed he would enter Star Trek in a role a million actors would kill for , then back away from the entirety of it. I don’t mean the actual movies, but the whole thing. Especially after ‘Heroes’ he had to understand what taking Spock would include. He said a while back how he was ready to scrap the whole acting dream, then came Sylar, then Spock, then he felt like he finally made it. So then your next move is…..let me try things on my own. He should be thankful all that stuff is there and give the franchise everything he has after they took such a big chance on him. Instead, he’s “taking a break”. Hope it works for him.

  14. Jason says:

This clown wouldn’t have any other interests if it weren’t for Star Trek. Heroes will be canceled within a year, maybe two, he’s gonna need to work. If they wanna make the Star Trek sequel tomorrow, his behind’s gonna be there.

    • Rodney says:

This clown nailed roles on Heroes and Star Trek because he is talented.

And he has his own production company as well so clearly he doesn’t “need” Star Trek, and he has other interests and ventures ahead of him.

You have it completely backwards. This “clown” has these things BECAUSE of his ability, not the other way around.

  15. 420BAND says:

Dude nailed the part and he’s one of the reasons I’ll watch more of these.

  16. cltmikey says:

Update! Quinto has come forward to clear up any confusion he’s caused. The following post was left on his official blog:

i have been inundated with questions and confusion about a comment i made during an interview with wired - about the new atari star trek online game - in which i said i am stepping away from trek for the next two years. obviously i will be a part of any upcoming films… reprising my role as spock. what i meant was that in the meantime i won’t be making any public appearances related to the franchise - or doing any more auxiliary projects pertaining to the trek universe. i will be focusing my efforts on other projects and preparing to shoot the next film - which will be released in june of 2012… two years from now. hence the no trek for two years remark. worry not trekkers. it was a misunderstanding of context. i am not spock. but i am spock. all at the same time.
