Avatar will hit Top Worldwide - Just not this past Weekend

So very close!! The Boxoffice take for the weekend is in and Avatar still isn’t the #1 Worldwide seat filler of all time.

Avatar has far exceeded the boxoffice results that I had anticipated. All along I thought the movie was going to be as ground breaking as the rumours implied, but I honestly didn’t see it killing at the boxoffice this much.

And the excuse that it doesn’t deserve it considering the rise in prices, and the additional income brought on by the premium you pay to see it in 3D? I don’t think that takes anything at all away from the achievement.

The 3D added to the appeal of the movie to showcase the technology in a medium in which it truly shines. So that appeal earned it some extra money? Isn’t that what all films do? The appeal of a film makes you go when its not Cheap Tuesdays, and the appeal of the film makes you see it before its a cheap rental at the corner Blockbuster. The 3D made you go see it and the extra 25% premium some paid to see this would still put this film ahead of the previous #2 Worldwide (Lord of the Rings: Return of the King) assuming everyone paid for 3D.

Yes, those numbers are to be considered, but I think that it is the appeal that makes the difference. The only thing I am wondering (if anyone knows how to calculate it) is market value. How is the change of the value of a dollar impact this?

In other boxoffice news, Alvin And the Chipmunks the Squeakquel is sitting at $364m worldwide right now, which squeaks it just past Sherlock Holmes at $363m. Alvin is beating Sherlock. Go figure.

    Well Deserved!
this one will be around for awhile.
and I agree, Appeal is what made me and my family stand in line for hours waaay back when Empire and Return of the Jedi hit theatres, same goes with Indiana Jones..these were special! and so is Avatar! Period!

I hope it beats out Titanic…even though I love Titanic (shut up)

I agree with you on 3D, however, I think the inflated number is the real goal and the uninflated number is the PR goal. FYI the inflated number is $2,462,548,422.21 If it can pull in another 600M I am very impressed.

Where did you get that number from. i thought it would be more than that. And what about gone with the wind?

      • MandarinOrange says:

Gone With The Wind grossed $189,523,031 (boxofficemojo.com) which today would be equal to $2,879,479,684.91 (westegg.com) So that defiantly takes the cake. However, one thing that is also important to keep in mind is the actual price of a ticket. In 1940 the average ticket price was $0.24. Today, that would be $3.65. Movie price tickets have not only gone up due to inflation. Is the ticket price relevant? I don’t know, it is just something to keep in mind.

Boxofficemojo has a adjusted list. I usually go by that. It is only for the US. Their numbers are different from yours. Maybe they ticket price and inflation into consideration.

There should be a list that just has the number of tickets sold.

I really don’t understand why this movie is the phenomenon it has turned out to be. It really boggles my mind that an OK movie could achieve this result (story wise). Sure the effects are great, but I wouldn’t think a $2 billion box office take would be within sights.

  5. Lawrence says:

James Cameron is probably swimming in cash right now. Wonder if he should open a slew of banks named after him once Avatar ends its run in theaters .

Still a love story at it’s heart..

Pocahontas, Dances with Wolves, carry very simular themes in some respect but guy’s C’mon!effects were great but the story, director and it’s actors (CGI included) brought their A game and made this special.

    So now what?
Y’know Goodfellas borrowed from the Godfather with the story of the mafia,Full Metal Jacket seemed like Platoon,Deep Blue Sea ripped off Jaws
    ETC.ETC.ETC.

My whole school is going to see Avatar in 3D this thursday. I really want to see this movie so I can judge for myself if it meets everyones expectations. I would rather pay the extra money to see it in 3D.

Did anyone else laugh that one off..

how bout: “I was struck by lightning 2 times blah blah blah”
