Redband She’s Out of My League Trailer Online

I really like Jay Baruchel. Its about time this guy got a leading role in a film. Ever since he got his start on Canada’s Popular Science for Kids co-hosting it with Elisha Cuthbert I wondered if he was going to be big. And while he has enjoyed a fair amount of success this will be his first real leading role in a big studio film.

And suitably so, the awkward yet charming Jay will be matched against a perfect 10 like Alice Eve in She’s Out of My League.

We already showed a trailer for this, but now a redband version is out that shows much of the same but with lots of fuckwords and some ball shaving.

I do want to see this, and it has a certain Apatow flavour to it.

The Last Airbender Poster Online

That other Avatar film is still a little ways away, but the title has long since dropped the Avatar title found in its animated series origins and is only known now as The Last Airbender.

I didn’t watch the series, but I caught enough of it to get the idea. It does look more interesting than most of the kiddie dribble lately. Anyways, a new poster has been released and it looks pretty groovy.

After seeing the teaser I am curious to see how they do with this. I hope it stays mostly serious.

Danny Elfman to score The Green Hornet

With all the news about Green Hornet, its a surprise indeed that they have never brought up the score. And though there is no official announcement yet, it looks like Danny Elfman has already taken the job.

First Showing shares:

Danny Elfman - the legendary composer will apparently be scoring Michel Gondry’s The Green Hornet starring Seth Rogen, Jay Chou, Cameron Diaz and Christoph Waltz. I received an email earlier tonight linking to Film Score Daily’s Top Forty Composer Countdown where, in the #2 spot, they list all kinds of details about Elfman. At the end, they mention that “he returns to the superhero genre with The Green Hornet.”

The music sets the feel of the film and can take a scene and make it epic or silly without changing one frame. And frankly Seth Rogen is going to need all the help he can get to pass himself off as the debonair and confident Green Hornet instead of a goofy fool in over his head.

Elfman’s scores are always spot on and add so much to the feel and work well with the spirit of adventure films. I am sure this will set the tone of the film.

Daniel Craig to replace Robert Downey Jr in Cowboys and Aliens

The very unique graphic novel Cowboys and Aliens was set to star Robert Downey Jr as the main cowbow, but with Sherlock Holmes getting the fasttrack to sequelville, RDJ has backed out leaving a job opening. Well rumours had Daniel Craig in negotiations for the role (with Bond on hold it seemed likely)

And Daniel Craig it is!

Daniel Craig has indeed replaced Robert Downey Jr. for the adaptation COWBOYS & ALIENS. RDJ exited the project because he wanted to film SHERLOCK HOLMES 2 which starts shooting this summer at the same time that COWBOYS VS. ALIENS starts production….

Craig will play cowboy Zeke Jackson who starts as alliance with the Indians, as they join forces to battle Aliens.

That kind of changes my anticipation for the film. While I am sure Craig will do a great job kicking alien ass, I was really digging the massive amounts of personality Robert Downey Jr would have brought to the adaptation.

That being said, I would sooner see him do Sherlock 2, and Craig will do fine to replace him.

Kristen Wiig to star in Bridesmaids

A new Judd Apatow comedy is coming our way in the form of Bridesmaids. And surprisingly it looks like backbencher Kristen Wiig is being given her chance to hold up the film in a leading role.

JoBlo says:

After quality supporting roles in KNOCKED UP, WHIP IT and EXTRACT, Wiig will get her first starring role in BRIDESMAIDS, a Universal comedy about two women competing to plan their best friends wedding. While that logline makes it sound some cheap BRIDE WARS spinoff, with Apatow and Wiig involved, you can expect there’ll be much more to it than that. Apatow, Wiig and Universal are in talks with James Bobin, co-creator of “Flight of the Conchords” to direct the film

Now we mention below that Bobin is also being tapped for the upcoming Muppet movie, so I don’t know if there will be a conflict here. It all depends on when they plan on doing this.

I was never a fan of Kristen Wiig. I like what she has done on SNL, and while she is good in supporting bits her comedy gets tired on me really fast. Its good stuff, but after the gag is done she wears thin.

Having said that, she was my favourite supporting actress in Whip It! and I was shocked at how genuine and warm she was in that. This just made me a million times more curious to see what she could do in a lead role.

Just a guess, but I bet that Leslie Mann gets to be the Bride. Just sayin.

James Bobin to Direct The Cheapest Muppet Movie Ever Made?

There is still rumblings that the ball is slowly moving forward on a new Muppet Movie. Last heard it was going to be Jason Segel writing The Cheapest Muppet Movie Ever Made! with his Sarah Marshal co-director Nick Stoller to direct, but now it seems that James Bobin has been offered the keys.

First Showing says:

James Bobin, co-creator of the cult HBO show Flight of the Conchords (with Jemaine Clement & Bret McKenzie), is being offered the directing job on the new Muppets movie in development at Disney. Vulture says that no deals have been made, but “the movie is James’ to direct — if he wants it.”

I haven’t seen Flight of the Conchords, so I don’t know if this guy is a good fit for The Muppets or Not, but as long as Jason Segel is still writing The Cheapest Muppet Movie Ever Made, then I am cool with it.

Its been far too long since we have seen a Muppet Movie and longer still since its been a pure Muppet Movie and not a literary classic re-imagined with Muppet characters. Don’t get me wrong, I love The Mupets Christmas Carol, Treasure Island etc… but I want to see the gang of fledgling performers trying to hit it big with their variety of stage acts, and I would love to see how they fit those things into a modern entertainment world.

In the past Muppet films and the show, they had a very dated maudlin variety show, and the updated comeback show wasn’t that popular and was eventually canceled.

‘Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps’ Trailer Online

Color me not impressed by the trailer. I loved the first Wall Street, hell who didn’t? The music in the trailer kind of sucked, Gordon’s character… Well never mind just watch it

Thoughts? Did it feel like Gordon was a has been? When he was getting his stuff from prison, it reminded me of ‘Worm’ from rounders when he got out. Although the cell phone thing was kind of funny.

Quinto to take 2 Year Leave from Star Trek

Zachary Quinto has made a public declaration that he is stepping away from all things Trek for at least 2 years to pursue his other interests.

Scifi Mafia says:

After starring in J.J. Abrams reboot of Star Trek in the iconic role of Mr. Spock and supplying his voice over talents for the Star Trek: Online MMORPG for Atari and Cryptic Games – Zachary Quinto has said that he’s going to be stepping away from all things in the Trek universe for awhile.

Quinto said in a recent interview,

“I’m stepping away from Star Trek for at least two years, no movies, no conventions, no anything for a while.”

Well considering there is a June 29th, 2012 release slated for Star Trek 2, I imagine his “two years off” might just be from the public eye.

Clearly he will have to return to work on Star Trek for his role in the sequel before two years if he plans to be in it. But it will be pretty close to 2 years before we see Quinto in the ears again, so its mostly accurate.

He does love the fans, and was an inspired choice for a young MrSpock. I don’t think anyone has to worry about him NOT doing the role. He just said he is taking a break for 2 years. He didn’t announce that he never would play Spock again.

Limited Edition Christopher Reeve Superman Statue to be Released

Cinemaquette has released a very limited edition Christopher Reeve Superman Statue that will be available for pre-order in a month or so, and ships in late spring. You have always wanted a Two and a Half foot tall Superman statue right? Well crack that wallet open just a little wider… this is going to hurt.

Via

Cinemaquette revealed the details for a brand new, 29″ in height, statue of Christopher Reeve donning his classic Superman garb and flying above a fortress of solitude influenced base. Though the price has not been announced, the rumor is that it will be in the $2000 price range.

Limited in production to 1,000 units worldwide.

The statue is “constructed of polyurethane composite with realistic silicon skin, the SUPERMAN Cinemaquette’s head is individually punched with real human hair.”

Now I could see the price being as much as the rumour suggests. With a limited run of only 1000 units, this is instantly going to become a rare item. $2000 is steep but not outrageous.

Its also a hefty pile of statue, at 29 inches it is a significant display piece.

But wait… did it say that the head is individually punched with real human hair? Ok…. that’s creepy.

Remastered Animated Lord of the Rings to be Re-Released

This is the OTHER ring to rule them all. Long before cinemaphiles were treated to the big screen live action adaptation of the classic Lord of the Rings, there was an animated feature that desperately tried to capture the imagination of JRR Tolkien to the screen. And from what I recall it did a pretty good job at it!

Well that classic animated feature is being remastered, and re-released on DVD and Bluray this April.

Journey back into the world of Hobbits, Humans, Elves and Dwarves in the all-new The Lord of the Rings Remastered Deluxe Edition coming April 6, 2010 from Warner Home Video. This original animated classic from acclaimed director Ralph Bakshi and Academy Award Winning producer, Saul Zaentz, has been remastered with pristine New Dolby 5.1 audio and picture quality and will be distributed as a single disc DVD and Blu-ray combo which features a Blu-ray, DVD and bonus digital copy. The film will also be available for Digital Download. This film is rated PG.

The deluxe edition also features a never-before-seen, 30-minute in-depth interview with legendary director Ralph Bakshi entitled
Forging Through The Darkness: The Ralph Bakshi Vision for The Lord Of The Rings. This special feature explores his concept for creating an
illustrated film, his pioneering rotoscoping process, and inspirations for his visual storytelling.

This was likely my first exposure to all things Lord of the Rings. I watched this animated classic on the movie channel in my youth, and later never managed to locate it on alternative media.

So its all pretty blurry to me, but I recall watching it with wonder. It wasn’t until later when I reached the comprehension level to actually READ the Lord of the Rings books, and of course remained a loyal fan ever since.

I will be anticipating this release to relive those early fanboy days of wonder.

The 20 Nerd Commandments

As a Movie Geek, there is some obvious crossover into other areas of geekdom for me such as video games, comic books, novels, and other pursuits of unique social circles. But it wasn’t until now that I had those quantified for me. The gang at Topless Robot with some reader submitted Commandments as well have compiled the 20 Nerd Commandments

I pride myself as being a geek first and foremost and rank Nerd as the derogatory term associated with my social standing, but there is some serious wisdom bombs being dropped here yo!

Topless Robot presents:

1) Thou must experience as many nerdy properties as possible throughout your youth (nerdy parents must assist with this). By the age of 20, you must have chosen at least two sides of the following: Star Wars or Star Trek, Kirk or Picard, Marvel or DC, Mac or PC, Trukk or Munkey, Baker or Tennant, and Joel or Mike. If these topics come up, you must argue your choice past all reasonableness.

2) Thou must always recognize your first exposure to a nerdy property was the best possible incarnation of that property. Likewise, thou must always find new incarnations, sequels, spin-offs, rip-offs, and media inspired these properties to be crappier than your prized original.

3) Thou must revere the Nerd Girl, because she is as rare as the diamond and just as valuable. Thou shouldst not stark her just because she’s the only girl in your nerd circle, and if/when she turns down your advances, you will not spurn her because that’s just shitty. And Nerd Girls, thou must be careful, for thy power is great — and can be used for both good and ill.

4) Thou must try to convince your significant other to name the child after a character of nerdy importance. If thou are cut from the cloth of the nerd tribe and have managed to breed, , and bringeth into the world the Lando’s, the Anakin’s, the Kal-Els. -Hagan

5) All nerds must be able to sketch, from memory, the basic outlines of the Millennium Falcon, USS Enterprise (NCC-1701), and the TARDIS.

6) Thou shalt not question who shot first.

7) Thou shalt acknowledge that Batman beats everyone, ever, anywhere at fighting. That’s right, he beats everybody. Even Optimus Prime. Even Darth Vader. Even Chuck Norris. He’d find a way. He’s the goddamn Batman.

8) Thou shalt be prepared to survive the zombie apocalypse, and teach thy children similarly.

9) Thou shalt not forget to honor and give thanks to the Dice Gods for your triumphs and victories.

10) If two nerds ever find themselves holding cylindrical objects of at least 9 inches in length they must immediately make lightsaber ignition noises and face each other down in mortal combat.

11) Shouldst thou hear a man proclaim, “Now you know,” for whatever reason, then thou must reply in your most triumphant voice, “And knowing is half the battle!” Let he who should offend against this law be cast out from the company of his worthier fellows and be made subject to aspersions made ‘gainst his improper rearing and the cuckolding whore that did sire him and perform the rearing.

12) When searching for something to watch on television you must watch the geek movie you come across, even if you have said movie in your collection. If anyone asks, “Why don’t you just watch the one you own?” stare at them like an idiot and explain, “That is not the point.”

13) In order to assure procreation of the nerd species, thou shalt not utter nerdy quotes during sex.

14) Thy first crush must be upon an cartoon character.

15) Thou must not be the nerdiest person in the room, the one nerd that even the other nerds are scared to be around. If your obsession causes you to lose a job, significant other, or cause harm to yourself, GET SOME FUCKING HELP. [Ed's Note: I feel like this covers my fan fic rule from before. If you're writing about pedobeastophiliac Care Bears porn, you're very likely this person, and you should knock that shit off. --Rob]

16) Thou must learn how to do to the Vulcan hand gesture, whether thou likes Star Trek or not.

17) Thou shalt be required to attend at least one nerd convention (videogames, anime, comics, etc.) during thy lifetime.

18) There shall be no viewing of fansubs by any self-described otaku/anime fan who can afford to purchase the said material (exceptions: viewing at conventions or titles that have no chance of being released stateside).

19) All nerds, when purchasing something in a store, must never pick up the first item in the front, because the item in front has almost certainly been touched by unclean hands, and thus its condition is less mint, the grade must pleasing to the nerd gods.

20) Thou must obey the Law of the Golden Mean. What is it? Glad you asked:
• Any thing that can be purchased, achieved or obtained that consists of a discrete number of individual parts, issues, episodes, or location; such as issues of a comic book, trading cards in a set, or action figures in a line is subject to the Law of the Golden Mean.
• Any nerd in possession of more than 61.8% of the individual items in such a series must, if at all possible, either proceed to acquire each of the remaining items so as to complete the set, or sell one or more items on eBay until the nerd again owns less than 61.8% of the total series.
• If the items owned make up a complete set of a more specific series, the law is satisfied.

Example 1:
Peter owns seasons one, two, three and four of Babylon 5 on DVD. Peter owns 4 of 5 (80%) of Babylon 5 on DVD, and so must also purchase Season 5 to complete the set, even though it kind of sucked.

Example 2:
Clark owns the first nine of sixteen collected volumes of Dave Sim’s “Cerebus the Aardvark.” Clark owns only 56.25% of the Cerebus books, and therefore may stop purchasing them without violating this Law once he realizes that they’ve gotten longwinded, incomprehensible, and obnoxious.

Example 3:
Logan owns all of issues 27 through 860 of Detective Comics except for Issue #449 (“Midnight Rustler of Gotham City”). Logan owns 96.7% of all Detective Comics issues and would ordinarily be required to complete the set. However, by buying Issue #449, Logan can complete the more specific set of all Detective Comics issues published since the introduction of Batman, after which he does not need to purchase issues 1 through 27.

Example 4:
Reed has photographs of himself with William Shatner, Majel Barrett, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, and Walter Koenig. His photographs comprise only 55.6% of the original nine-member regular cast of Star Trek: The Original Series, and it is unnecessary for him to stalk either Michelle Nichelle Nichols or Grace Lee Whitney, although I bet that won’t stop him.

Example 5:
Bruce has 300 issues of Fantastic Four from the 1960s through the 1980s in plastic storage tubs under his bed. Because Bruce owns less than 61.8% of the 500-plus Fantastic Four issues, he is not required to purchase the entire set. However, Bruce’s collection likely includes more than 61.8% of those Fantastic Four issues inked by Joe Sinnott, and if Bruce is aware of this, he will be required to complete that subset.

For most nerds, failure to abide by the Law of the Golden Mean will result in madness, obsession, and eventually a drunken late-night sale of the entire remaining collection on eBay.

I can attest to a good number of these laws being upheld even unintentionally in my life, and as mentioned, I would qualify that as being geeky not nerdy.

The greatest of these laws is not to be the nerdiest nerd in the nerd herd. My wife often finds herself rolling her eyes at my geekiness, but to my credit unless I am gushing about a particular topic of interest that exposes my geek, I hide it pretty well in my appearance.

Im like the green beret of geek. You won’t see it coming, but by the time you know I am in there, its already too late.

Do you have any suggestions that would make for some good Nerd Bylaws to these commandments?

Zelda Rubinstein dies at Age 76

The oddly creepy yet warm diminutive medium from Poltergeist has died at the age of 76.

BBC News shares:

The 4ft 3in (1.29m) actress died in hospital on Wednesday after recently suffering a heart attack, her agent told the Los Angeles Times.

Eccentric medium Tangina Barrons was her first major role and one she reprised in two Poltergeist sequels.

Zelda Rubinstein was the connection to the spirit world that managed to dodge the supposed Poltergeist curse (that claimed the lives of 6 Poltergeist stars in 6 years) to live a long and prosperous life, but she never out ran her most popular character so early in her career.

Go to the Light Zelda.

Mortal Kombat Reboot?

I am dying for the day when Video Game movies take that turn and actually earn the right to real writers, great actors and solid storylines. But so far that doesn’t really happen… or when it does, its poorly executed.

That being said, console fighting franchise Mortal Kombat is aiming for a reboot to the big screen, and already has hired a writer.

/Film says:

Warner Bros. are in early development of a new Mortal Kombat movie. They’ve already selected a writer in Oren Uziel, author of the Black List 2009 entry Shimmer Lake. That script was a twisty, suspenseful thriller that combined murder mystery with a bank heist plotline, so it would seem Uziel has a smarter way with narrative than is strictly necessary for a beat ‘em up tournament film.

I find it interesting that they would hand this sort of franchise over to a heady writer like Oren Uziel, who is more at home with intrigue and well.. plot. But that tiny shimmer of hope that a Mortal Kombat film might actually be interesting instead of a wasting all their time on what they pretended was story just to show a sequence of fight scenes.

Mortal Kombat Annihilation was the ONLY film I almost walked out on. I have always been of the opinion that if you walk out of a film, you no longer hold the rights to an opinion on it. But that was just so terrible that I nearly did forfeit my right to save myself from seeing it. The only thing that stopped me is that we went with a group and I didn’t learn until later that they too wanted to walk.

But among the terrible stinking pile that is video game adaptations, the first Mortal Kombat wasn’t terrible. Not great, but not terrible.

I would entertain the thought knowing they are trying to honestly make a great film out of it that also has action.

Concept Art gives us First Peek at the Green Lantern Corp

Some very cool concept art has come out illustrating what some of the other Lantern Corp characters might look like!

Its great to see Tomar-Re, Abin Sur and of course KILLOWOG!! I hope they get Michael Clarke Duncan to voice him, because thats always how he has sounded in my head. And Tomar-Re doesn’t look at all ridiculous despite having a fish for a head.

If Mark Strong is Sinestro (likely), we will start seeing what he might look like in the digs and seeing these variations of the Lantern uniform, we can speculate what Reynolds will look like. Sounds like we will see Sinestro as a Lantern since he isn’t listed as the primary villain of this film. Part of what makes Sinestro such a great villain and rival for GL down the road is that Hal is the reason that Sinestro is booted from the Corp to begin with. Sinestro was originally Hal’s instructor in Green Lantern boot camp. I am fine with Sinestro not being the core villain of the first film as it sets him up perfectly for the sequel.

But look at that Killowog!!!

Guy Ritchie may Abandon Lobo to do Sherlock Holmes 2

Seems the fasttrack to Sherlock Holmes 2 has left the adaptation of Cowboys and Aliens without Robert Downey Jr, and now it appears another casualty to another planned film will be suffering to make theSherlock sequel happen.

Guy Ritchie was getting ready to do Lobo when the plan to dive into Sherlock 2 so quickly may have him abandoning that project now too.

First Showing shares:

Joel Silver, who is serving as producer on both projects, says the studio is all about he and Ritchie working on a Sherlock Holmes sequel even if that means bailing on Lobo, but it’s not official yet. Silver elaborated:

I don’t think he’s going to do it now. I would guess a different director [will take on the project]. The studio wants us and Guy to focus on making another ‘Sherlock Holmes.’ So I think we’re going to be doing that.

So while other sites are already calling it done (and it likely is) it is just likely headed that way.

Frankly I am all for Ritchie doing another Sherlock. I enjoyed his version more than I thought I would. He shattered any preconceived notions of Sherlock as a stuffy quiet intellectual who solved crimes purely by observation and pondering. And yet still didn’t piss all over what Sherlock IS about. I liked that a great deal.

Now Lobo I could do without. He is nothing but a joke. No really.. thats what Lobo originally was - a joke. An over the top DC fabrication to poke fun at the Wolverine character from their rivals. Lobo has no depth to him and just has no appeal to me at all. Not even a little. Now if they give him depth and story - then I will reconsider. But based on the property as it is right now, I cannot motivate myself to be interested in the concept of a Lobo film.

Bring on Sherlock. Lobo is so secondary (or seventhdary…)

Kevin Feige talks Avengers - Hulk is in!

When Kevin Feige gets off on a rant you just step back and aim the microphone at him. He will tell you a LOT of things if you let him go.

For instance, he has spilled that the core Avengers lineup will consist of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Hulk and Fury. Yes! Hulk will be in Avengers. I was kind of hoping he would be the misunderstood badguy and the good hearted heroes learn of his struggle and bring him in to help him (which may be a theme anyways). Now this is not final, and the roster might flesh out with a couple minors as well (that can spinoff into their own films after -ahem Scarlet Witch/Vison, Antman/Wasp)

First Showing quotes Fiege:

“My only concern is that when we launch a franchise–whichever character’s franchise that may be–it should stand on its own two feet… So by the time ‘The Avengers’ comes in 2012, it’s not just a team superhero movie with a bunch of characters with powers. It’s three people- four including the Hulk; five including Nick Fury- who you’ve seen before in other movies, coming together for the first time.”

Of course all this planning has quickly become extremely fun, and although they’re introducing characters (especially in Iron Man 2) who will take up valuable screentime, Feige says they’re wise to not let it get too convoluted ad reinforces their respect of each franchises’ individual boundaries:

“It’s fun now, and we’re introducing some new characters in ['Iron Man 2']. But it’s not about just cramming in lots of new people; that’s sort of the cardinal sin of the sequel - adding in too many characters. This is totally Tony Stark’s story. And that’s gonna weave into Thor’s story, and Steve Rogers’ story, and it’s already ingrained with Nick Fury’s story and and organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D.”

“…we’re doing the Jack Kirby/StanLee/Walt Simonson/J. Michael Straczynski ‘Thor.’ We’re not doing the blow-the-dust-off-the-old-Norse-book-in-your-library ‘Thor.’ And in the ‘Thor’ of the Marvel Universe, there’s a race called the Asgardians. And we’re linked through this Tree of Life that we’re unaware of. It’s real science, but we don’t know about it yet. The ‘Thor’ movie is about teaching people that.”

“I’d love to break into the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe even more- it’s kind of there in ‘Thor.’ J.J. Abrams’ ‘Star Trek’ got me jonesing to do that. It’s what I grew up on - ‘Star Trek’ and ‘Star Wars.’ I want to do a big space epic. And we’ve got them in Marvel.”

I agree that there is potential for some space stories in Marvel as well. Hell, do a Starjammers movie!! Hells ya!!

I would love to see the Starjammers and the Shiar Empire and stuff like that. Of course they would have to leave out the part where Corsair is Cyclops’ daddy (Since X-Men is Fox toy right now) but it would be a great space pirate adventure.

I do like how its not just introducing the characters in their own stand alone films and then throwing them into Avengers. There will be an intertwined subplot going on here that is stronger than just the Nick Fury cameo.

But the real question that is still unanswered…. who will be the Villian - or evil organization that the Avengers are brought together to fight off? Masters of Evil/Thunderbolts?

Avatar 2 about to enter Preproduction

Avatar is already gearing up for pre-production on a sequel, and with the heaps of money they made on it I am not surprised.

CinemaBlend says

Even though Cameron still insists they don’t have a story, Slashfilm says they’re gearing up for pre-production anyway.

Their tipster claims technical crew have already been signed up for three and five year contracts to work on the sequel.

Not to say that a sequel cannot work, but after a film like this I kind of get a bad taste in my mouth.

What worked for Avatar is that it told a complete story and didn’t make me crave more. The story ends satisfactorily, and both sides move on with the humans licking their wounds and the Na’vi setting to rebuild.

So to introduce a NEW epic conflict to a setting that has resolved just feels awkward.

Granted, I don’t see the money grubbing corporate desk warmers on Earth settling for the sob story the remnant humans will offer up on their return, and they may send a new force in to retake their Unobtanium deposits. (FYI - in the 80s Oakley Sunglasses called the rubbery contacts on the nose and trigger arms of their glasses “unobtanium”) Maybe they will expand the Avatar project and create their own army of Na’vi with advanced technology?

It makes sense that they would sign production deals for that long. While it might not take another 15 years to create this film (most of that was tech development) it surely will keep them busy for at least 3, and maybe 5 if they plot two sequels back to back.

No Bloom for Pirates 4

Tis a sad day.. No, not really. Orlando Bloom officially confirmed that he will NOT be returning for “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.”

Latino Review has the story:

During the Sundance Film Festival, MTV News caught up with actor Orlando Bloom and put that very question to him — but according to the actor, his days as Will Turner are over. “No, definitely not,” he said when asked if he’d return for the fourth “Pirates” movie. “I think Will is sort of swimming around with the fish at the bottom of the ocean.”

That’s not to say that Bloom has hard feelings towards Disney or its popular franchise — his decision to leave the “Pirates” films was purely a matter of wanting to try new roles. “I had a great time making those movies,” he said. “I just really wanted to do different things, but I think it’s going to be great. Whatever Johnny does, I think it’s fantastic.”

I don’t think he will be missed…

First Look at Big Screen Captain America and Thor Costumes?

Our first hint at what Captain America and Thor might look like in their respective films comes via Kotobukiya - a company that makes collectible ministatues for Marvel and DC properties.

How do we know this is what they will look like? Well we do not know 100%, however Kotobukia gets their hands on the concept art for the films long before the release and bases their statues on those images. In the past their Iron Man, Incredible Hulk and Punisher figures all looked exactly as the characters did in the film.

So lets take a peek at the figures just released then when an announcement does come out, we will see how close these were.

I like the realism to the figures, but still not spandex covered bodybuilders.

If this is how they are going to look, I am perfectly fine with that!

‘Incredible Hulk’ Director Talks Edward Norton Return

MTV News spoke with “Incredible Hulk” director Louis Leterrier about the return of Edward Norton and a sequel to the Incredible Hulk. Personally, I liked the reboot much better than the original. It wasn’t a HORRIBLE film. If what they are saying below they pull off, I think it could be a VERY good sequel.

MTV News has the story:

What would it would take to bring Norton back for another adventure as Bruce Banner.

“It depends,” Leterrier told MTV News. “It’s not a Marvel/Edward thing, it would be really be about, well… We told the story of the fugitive, what’s the next step in the story?”

“It can’t just be ‘Don’t make me angry, you wouldn’t like me when I’m angry,’” he explained. “That would be a problem if you do the same thing over and over again. Edward’s never done the same movie twice, so I don’t think he would do that.”

So now that we know what won’t bring Norton back, what about the sort of movie that will see Norton returning to the Marvel movie-verse?

“If you find something interesting — yeah, I’m sure he would [be back],” said Leterrier. “He’s a fanboy. He’s as big a fanboy as you and me, maybe even more.”

However, Leterrier said he wasn’t exactly optimistic about getting the chance to make another “Hulk” movie — so a return in “Avengers” could be the next time we’ll see the character.

“The box office [for 'Incredible Hulk'] was great, but it wasn’t so big that you had to make a sequel,” he said.

Stan Lee talks Spider-Man Reboot and Iron Man 2 Cameo

Stan Lee is always a pleasure to watch. He borders on being a fanboy himself but he keeps his head on his shoulders.

Check out this clip of him talking about why he likes the idea of a Spider-Man reboot as well as his spill about what his cameo in Iron Man 2 will be.

I love the silly exaggerated voice Stan puts on when acting like a fanboy. So awesome. Yeah, everyone will complain about change. But none of it will be validated unless the reboot sucks.

And I always thought that Stan Lee kind of looked like a cross between Larry King and Hugh Hefner anyways… and now art imitates life.

Planet Hulk DVD Movie Releases Feb

Hulk was always just on my radar but never on my reading list. I still know enough about the character to pay attention to what is going on with him.

So when the Planet Hulk event happened in Marvel in 2006 I took notice. Hot damn that was some of the best storytelling in all of comics. Now Marvel Animation is releasing the Planet Hulk story in a direct to DVD movie event release.

In a nutshell, a group of superpowered leaders like Doctor Strange, Professor Xavier and Iron Man (among others) who form “The Illuminati” sit down to decide what they are going to do about their friend Bruce Banner and his monster within The Hulk. They realize his only wish is to be left alone, so they lure him into a spacecraft and banish him to a distant planet without sentient life so he can be alone. But when Hulk realizes what’s going on he looses his kittens and tears apart the ship causing him to land on a different planet.

On this planet he is forced into a gladitorial ring, and eventually becomes the saviour of the slave population on this planet.

Insane Clown Posse star in Big Money Rustlas

Ok, I have to say this ranks pretty high on my wtf-o-meter. It seems that the epitome of gimmick, the Insane Clown Posse have made their own movie.

And its a western. Called Big Money Rustlas.

I don’t want to believe that this is real. But apparently it had a gala opening at the Fillmore Theater in Detroit and has its own IMDB Page as well.

Oh its real. And it looks hella retarded. But aside from the overqualified and talented likes of the Insane Clown Posse themselves, the film also stars Todd Bridges of 80s Sitcom Diff’rent Strokes fame. You know, to add credibility.

New District 13 Ulitmatum

I was delivered a new clip for District 13 Ulitmatum, and if they keep this up, the whole movie will be online.

Still it looks like a more serious version of what Jackie Chan has been doing for decades with some fun Parkour stuff added in.

Looks like some fun.

New Runaways Teaser Poster Online

A new teaser poster is out for The Runaways staring Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart.

I was surprised to see a poster that brought back more focus to the band in this girl rock biopic instead of seeing Stewart and Fanning.

I am sure we will get a rock pose Fanning and Stewart poster sometime, but this one is as good as any to remind you this isn’t “That Twilight Girl” movie and that its about the band. I am curious to see if Stewart can outrun that character, or if I will ever see Fanning as more than 8 years old in my head.

Gremlins to Return in 3D?

Gremlins was comedy genius, and a truly original idea. Now with other 80s films coming out of retirement like Ghost Busters, it seems that there is a rumour that with the recent return of director Joe Dante (who originally directed Gremlins) that he may be tapped for a new Gremins movie.

And of course, they would make it in 3d!

Market Saw is spreading the rumour:

I have very good information from a top source that tells me another GREMLINS movie is coming to the silver screens and it will be in stereoscopic 3D! It is in the early stages with still lots of hurdles to pass, but it is being developed. This is not a 3D conversion of the original to be clear.

There are somethings that only work if you are in the 80s. And when looking back on some of these films, they worked BECAUSE it was the 80s. We were a very forgiving sort then, and had a real penchant for the campy silliness.

Can they make a Gremlins 3? Or will it be a remake?

Would it have the same charm? Or will it give our kids nightmares now?

Sherlock Holmes 2 may Film this Summer

I really liked Sherlock Holmes, and as expected the $90m budget compared to over $360m boxoffice draw so far, a sequel cannot be far behind.

Its a good thing they optioned a script already.

Movie Moron shares:

Warner Bros. actually commissioned a script for Sherlock Holmes 2 three months before the first movie was even released. It’s becoming increasingly common for studios to do this for movies with pre-release ‘buzz’ as it enables a sequel to get into production faster, for less cost.

Since they did that they’re now in the process of locking down the cast for a June start date. Downey Jr. recently passed on the lead role in Jon Favreau’s Cowboys And Aliens to free up that time.

While I really wanted to see RDJ take on some Aliens in a Cowboy era film, I really do want to see him reprise his quirky Sherlock Holmes and they have to fit this between his very busy Iron Man appearances and Avengers roles (as well as everything else they have him lined up for)

They laid enough groundwork incorporating the superior evil mastermind of Professor Moriarty in the first film, so I anticipate there will be some of that in the sequel.

As much as I always want to see more Rachel McAdams, I don’t anticipate her return. Her character is already established as a wanderer, so she might show up again, but maybe not in the sequel.

I liked how Moriarty was concealed in shadows in a less than subtle introduction, but not the main antagonist in the film. I hope to see more of that. It adds even more mystery if no one ever really knows what Moriarty will look like.

Its not known if the sequel will draw inspiration on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s work or if this will be an original story.

Brand and Marsden join I Hop

A new Universal family comedy shamelessly latching on to the Apple naming trends of putting an i in front of a word, and playing a bunny pun against the popular breakfast foods chain for a title that has only a vague connection to the plot, I Hop is coming with James Marsden and Russell Brand.

Obsessed with Film says:

Universal comedy that will star James Marsden as an unemployed slacker who accidentally runs over the Easter Bunny (voiced by Russell Brand) with his car, and takes him under his wing to nurses him back to full health.

Tthe movie will be part live-action/part CGI and it comes from the director who blended the two in Alvin and the Chipmunks

While this trend of mythical creature family friendly films is amusing if you are 12, I can’t stand them.

Oh who am I kidding! I love these family friendly light films. Not every film has to be The Dark Knight, and frankly I really like James Marsden, and I actually am one of the few who is not irritated by Russel Brand… so while I dont expect many to follow me, the kids and I will likely go see this.

I know. But some of you go to the Jackass films too and I still let you breathe.

New Wolfman Poster Online

A new poster for Benicio Del Toro’s Wolfman is out, and they figured the best way to improve it was to include a bevvy of floating airbrushed photoshopped heads.

Oh, and a wolfman. He’s there too.

The previous posters were as unremarkable, but at least they lacked photoshopped floating heads. That cliche needs to die.

I don’t like this poster at all. Thankfully for them I do like Del Toro, and Hopkins.

Kurtzman and Orci talk Star Trek 2 Villain

Kurtzman and Orci were talking again about what they might do with the Star Trek sequel.

Will it have Khan? Orci has said bluntly “We would never do a remake…” so that appears to rule out Khan as a badguy, but they are not ignorant to the impact of a strong villain in the film.

FirstShowing quotes:

“I think our idea on this is that the first of any series is about them coming together or the formation. I couldn’t really tell you what Jeff Bridges was doing in Iron Man, but it doesn’t matter at all because it is all about Iron Man becoming Iron Man. Whereas I think sequels are very much about the villain. Because while [in the first one] the villain serves to bring the crew together, the second one I think has to be a true challenging of what that family is about. That is why Wrath of Khan was so amazing. Khan tested each one of them and ultimately asked for the [ultimate] sacrifice, and that is why that movie held up so well.”

I like how they are insistant that it will not be a remake of the sequel in the original film series. I really want them to go all fresh and new and NOT just recycle the old storylines with the new cast.

Hop ahead to where Kirk has become a phenom and the youngest Captain in Federation history. Have others challenge his sudden rise in ranks, have doubt and plenty of character interaction, but have his crew solidly behind him. Then bring in a villain worthy of the format.

Should it be Khan. No. We know in the timeline that he is out there, as are his genetically created superpeople. But will Kirk even cross paths with him now that will trigger the events of Wrath of Khan? Who says there is any wrath now?

I like how they illustrate how Nero was an unimportant villain. I felt that way, but they made it obvious as to why he wasn’t played up as a major presence. Its not what their film was about.

I look forward to seeing what they do with a villain in Star Trek 2. They seem to have their head in the right place here. Origin is over, now lets have a serious conflict!

I vote for a badass Klingon Warlord!

Avatar will hit Top Worldwide - Just not this past Weekend

So very close!! The Boxoffice take for the weekend is in and Avatar still isn’t the #1 Worldwide seat filler of all time.

Avatar has far exceeded the boxoffice results that I had anticipated. All along I thought the movie was going to be as ground breaking as the rumours implied, but I honestly didn’t see it killing at the boxoffice this much.

And the excuse that it doesn’t deserve it considering the rise in prices, and the additional income brought on by the premium you pay to see it in 3D? I don’t think that takes anything at all away from the achievement.

The 3D added to the appeal of the movie to showcase the technology in a medium in which it truly shines. So that appeal earned it some extra money? Isn’t that what all films do? The appeal of a film makes you go when its not Cheap Tuesdays, and the appeal of the film makes you see it before its a cheap rental at the corner Blockbuster. The 3D made you go see it and the extra 25% premium some paid to see this would still put this film ahead of the previous #2 Worldwide (Lord of the Rings: Return of the King) assuming everyone paid for 3D.

Yes, those numbers are to be considered, but I think that it is the appeal that makes the difference. The only thing I am wondering (if anyone knows how to calculate it) is market value. How is the change of the value of a dollar impact this?

In other boxoffice news, Alvin And the Chipmunks the Squeakquel is sitting at $364m worldwide right now, which squeaks it just past Sherlock Holmes at $363m. Alvin is beating Sherlock. Go figure.

International Redband Chloe Trailer Online

The International (French subtitled) Trailer for Liam Neeson and Amanda Seyfried’s Chloe is online, and while I was waiting for one without the subtitles, this will have to do.

Oh, its also the redband trailer, but aside from a bare bum and some suggestive sexual acts, there is little “red” about it.

A woman thinks her husband is cheating on her, so she hires Chloe - an escort - to make advances on him to see what happens. Chloe goes too far and goes all single white female, causing more problems than they had before.

I really like Amanda Seyfried, and Julianne Moore with Liam Neeson too? Hell, they didn’t even have to throw in a lesbian romp with Seyfried and Moore to get me interested. But that helped.

Fake First Avenger Poster looks Awesome

An adventurous fan has put together a fake poster for Captain America: The First Avenger, and its pretty damned good.

ThinkHero has it out for us to see:

I like the gritty edge to it. I don’t want a candy coated World War 2 picture so I hope that this reflects how it will go.

I am half anticipating that they might use the traditional kite shield shape, but seeing the perfectly round frisbee shield on Tony Stark’s workbench implies to me he uses it in dubdubtwo and that at the end of the film they might recover it (and somehow makes its way to Stark’s collection - he is a patriot, and people would know of the legend of Captain America). When Tony joins Fury in approaching the freshly thawed legendary hero in Avengers, it would be a proud moment for Tony to hand him his shield.

Conquest of the Planet of the Apes not Dead Yet

I agree with most everyone that the reboot of Planet of the Apes could have been better. With that said, it wasn’t horrible. It was watchable, and the end of the movie left enough to warrant a sequel \ prequel for me anyway.

Fox hasn’t yet given up on the idea of a remake for Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, renamed: Caesar.

Latino Review gives us the update:

According to the Vulture section of New York Mag, insiders close to the matter have stated that Fox is still pursuing its reimagining of Conquest of the Planet of the Apes. The new film, entitled Caesar, was written by Riff Jaffa and Amanda Silver, both of whom are reportedly being brought back along with new writer Jamie Moss, to do some edits.

In the version Frank wanted to direct, the film focuses on how the apes first became intelligent and then rose to fight against the humans under the leadership of an ape named Caesar. What may be of interest to other Planet of the Ape fans though, [SPOILERS AHEAD IF YOU'VE NEVER SEEN CONQUEST OF THE PLANET OF THE APES OR ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET OF THE APES] is that in Caesar, the name “refers to the genetically altered leader of the simian rebellion.”

Impressive ‘Lost’ Crash Spliced in Real Time

It’s no secret I am a HUGE Lost fan. Someone has put together a spliced version from all the perspectives possible from all the episodes of the crash of flight 815 in real time. It is very impressive if you are a fan of Lost.

The new season starts February 2nd

No Hobbit until Dec 2012

Boo. No Hobbit in 2011. I was really looking forward to seeing this next Christmas (Well 2 from now). They don’t even have a confirmed Bilbo Baggins yet, so I guess this comes as no surprise.

Variety gives us the story:

Warner Brother’s President Horn won’t predict when the first of the two “Hobbit” films will be out, but says the most probable scenario would be a release in the fourth quarter of 2012.

“It’s a big bet for us. But it’s one we think will pay off given the success of ‘Lord of the Rings,’” says Emmerich. “This is one of the few movies it feels like people are waiting for.”

So probably December 2012. This is good news that we will be able to see Part 1, the bad news is, accordian to the Mayans, we will all be dead and never be able to see Part 2.

DVD Review: Jackie Chan Presents - Wushu

Thanks for checking out our DVD review of Jackie Chan Presents - Wushu.

Genre: Action
Directed by: Antony Szeto
Staring: Sammo Hung Kam-Bo, Fengchao Liu, Wenjie Wang, Pheobe Wang, Yongchen Liu, Yachao Wang, Junjie Mao, Dong Wei
Released: January 26, 2010

THE GENERAL IDEA

Upon arrival to an elite martial arts conservator, a group of young boys swear an allegiance to each other and form a gang, A decade later at Graduation, the unexpectedly cross paths with an evil marital arts master and foil his kidnapping plan. Now they must put their combat skills to the test in order to defeat this enemy and save their brotherhood.

THE GOOD

This is a showcase of exactly what the art of Wushu is, while having a little adventure in the mix. It is a story about friendship and success while these hard working Wushu artists each strive to be better at their art as well as themselves.

The story is sufficient considering many action films place that secondary. It can be campy but there is some amazing action. The wirework is at a minimum, and where it is is done well. Some impossible moves are present, but they are seamlessly thrown in with other amazing talent that its just a wonder to watch them move.

Oh, and despite Sammo Hung playing the aging mentor, he does open up a can and its awesome.

THE BAD

The acting is REALLY campy, but it lends strongly to the style of movie. As with most films of this genre the characters are exaggerated. As much as that is a credit to the genre, it might be off-putting to those who are not a fan.

Also, despite being Presented by Jackie Chan he is not in this, and the inclusion of his name in the title is purely for promotion for the US release. He is the Executive Producer.

OVERALL

All in all I found the story to be interesting enough, the action to be amazing and the characters all likable. It wasn’t an outstanding film on all levels, but it was pretty entertaining.

This will be getting a North American direct to DVD release on January 26th, and if you like these light story action flicks it will be a fun rental.

I give Wushu a 7 out of 10

Diary of a Wimpy Kid Trailer Online

The tortured middleschool sterotypes have not been abused quite enough, so the bestselling book Diary of a Wimpy Kid was made into a film of the same name, and it actually looks pretty cute.

Yeah, its not going to change the face of film, but it looks like it might be a fun kid flick that will make my kids laugh without resorting to fart jokes. The “cute butt” thing was borderline, but it was well delivered from that innocence of the tween mind about to be corrupted with the reality of middleschool.
