The Art of the Title Sequence

A new blog I tripped over today takes a unique look at the parts of the movie that most people don’t notice. The credits.

Art of the Title Sequence posts deconstruction of new and old films which have interesting title sequences.

For me, the title sequence sets the pace of the film, and while it might provide background information to catch you up to speed on the main characters like Face/Off and the Rebooted Incredible Hulk, then they become part of the story. But some might be distracting and pull you out of the story offering nothing to keep your attention while obligatory names are flung across the screen.

There are a number of ways we are used to seeing these credits displayed. Sometimes a hovering line of text fades in and out while the movie is already started, sometimes its a grand display. Other times they just don’t work at all.

One of my favourite comedies is Sylvester Stallone’s Oscar. Brilliant film. But the opening credits consist of a small portly plastacine Italian Opera singer giving a jolly performance of Figaro, while words pop up on the “stage” behind him. Boring. Its a good thing that movie rocks.

Then there are visual adventures like Catch Me if you Can, or the retro pop stylings of Superman/Batman: Public Enemies that give us a thrilling visual experience without actually getting into the film at all.

There is always interesting ways to make you want to watch the end credits too. In most recent history The Hangover did a great job with that, revealing all the mysteries of the film in the form of a digital camera that shows what really happened to them on their drunken romp. This was also reminicent of the franchise recap at the end of Lethal Weapon 4.

So what are your favourite opening sequences? Closing credits?

Loved the opening credits for The Great Race. Loved the end credits for Running Scared with Paul Walker.

  2. Glenn says:

Fight Club are some of the best credits I’ve seen and Lord of War.

I loved the opening to “Batman” from 1989. That spine-tingling music from Danny Elfman and that visual work with the lighting on the inside of the bat symbol really helped set the mood, as if we were already in Gotham City.
It’s nothing amazing, but it was all I could think of.

Watchman is my Favorite. lord of war, Superman Franchise, psycho, various James Bond, Panic Room, Napoleon Dynamite, To Kill a Mockingbird, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, juno among others are also good

Dawn of the Dead Remake was pretty fantastic too. Zack Snyder knows how to reel in an audience from the start.

I love the Spider-Man 2 and 3 opening sequences. I liked the way the pictures caught you up on the events of the previous films. I loved Spider-Man 2’s better because of the awesome handpainted artwork.

It should be said that some of the best opening and closing credit sequences are joined with a great score. When I say the name of a composer, say John Williams? One may think of the first time they seen Jaws or the first OT Star Wars. Or even Superman.

Would some of the opening title scenes have the same effect without the music? I think of Jerry Goldsmith’s score for Total Recall or Ennio Morricone’s The Untouchables.

I had also loved the opening title sequences for Ruthless People, Spider-Man 2, To Live & Die In L.A. Near Dark, The Devil’s Rejects and Speed.

Closing credits: Repo Man, 300 and Drumline

Watchmen definately gets my number 1 spot. The way it captured the world and the history of the story was incredible (especially seeing the comedian assasinate JFK)

My number 2 would be the Dawn of the Dead remake, mainly because the Johnny Cash song is so awesome =p

  11. James (Haz) says:

Quantom Of Solace was embarrassingly bad. Like, i laughed.

The spiderman ones have been straight up stupid with the whole
“Oh, lets recap every single previous movie…and follow THAT with a narration from Spiderman on how his current live is, because the viewers are idiots”

I agree that Watchmen was beast ^^^^

  12. 420BAND says:

BULLIT still holds up for me as coolest title sequence…

    that and Austin Powers

  13. 420BAND says:

Hangover end credits were funnier than the film (in my opinion)

  14. GT says:

    Oscar is an awful film…
