The Summer Of 2009 Obituary: Wrapping Up The Summer Of Suck

By John - August 28, 2009 - 15:06 America/Montreal

There is no other way to put it. The summer of 2009 was probably one of most disappointing summer movie seasons I can remember in a long time. Of the 47 or so movies that came into wide release this season, I can almost count on one hand the number of films I really enjoyed. At the beginning of the summer I predicted it would be about 14. Soooo wrongggggg.

So as we come to a close, I thought I’d take some time to wrap up the summer of 2009 highlighting what I found to be:

1) THE BEST MOVIES OF THE SUMMER

2) THE MOST DISAPPOINTING MOVIES OF THE SUMMER

3) THE “NOT GOOD BUT NOT NEARLY AS BAD AS YOU THOUGHT OR HEARD” MOVIES OF THE SUMMER

and finally

4) THE WORST MOVIES OF THE SUMMER

So with that little intro out of the way… let’s proceed with this postmortem shall we:

THE BEST MOVIES OF THE SUMMER

2009-UP.jpg #1 - UP
Hands down, no questions asked, easily and by far and away the very best movie of the summer of 2009 and of 2009 in general
2009-Julie-Julia.jpg #2 - JULIE & JULIA
Trust me, I’m as shocked as you are, but aside from “UP” there wasn’t another film this summer that so entertained me as this one. Meryl Streep MUST get nominated for an Oscar for this film. Touching, funny as hell and amazingly charming all at the same time. Fantastic story.
2009-Trek.jpg #3 - STAR TREK
Many thought it couldn’t be done (including me to be honest), but somehow they found a away to faithfully re-invent Star Trek in a way that was both nostalgic and fresh all at the same time. Such a great job. Can’t wait for the next one!
2009-District.jpg #4 - DISTRICT 9
Highlighted by a brilliant break out performance by Sharlto Copley and some of the summer’s best visual effects and action with dramatic tension, District 9 becomes the sleeper hit of the summer.
2009-Hangover.jpg #5 - THE HANGOVER
What initially looked like just another throw away comedy, The Hangover had us in stiches and finally may have given Bradley Cooper a shot at being a legit leading man in Hollywood.

THE MOST DISAPPOINTING MOVIES OF THE SUMMER (not the worst, but high hopes leading to bad films)

2009-Transformers.jpg #1 - TRANSFORMERS 2
I’m still angry about this. The first Transformers is one of my all time favorite summer popcorn flicks… this one… just shit all over me. From the new Jar Jar twins, the leg humping robot, Devastator who didn’t actually fight anyone and just a general lack of doing anything right. If it wasn’t for some of the mind blowing effects and frantic action, I’d put this on the worst list instead of this one.
2009-Funny-People.jpg #2 - FUNNY PEOPLE
Before it opened I actually thought this film might have a chance at some Oscar hype. Not a chance. A dry and confused movie that had no sense of identity or direction populated with highly unlikeable characters who were unable to generate any sense of sympathy. Yes, it pretty accurately depicted the lifestyle of many comedians… but that doesn’t make it good. You can accurately depict the life of a parking attendant, doesn’t mean I want to pay to see it
2009-Terminator.jpg #3 - TERMINATOR: SALVATION
When we heard Batman decided to join the cast a wave of optimism flooded over the internet about this film. Trailers looked half decent too. Movie didn’t.

THE MOST “NOT AS BAD AS YOU HEARD OR THOUGHT IT WOULD BE” MOVIES OF THE SUMMER (finding entertainment value where you didn’t think any would exist)

2009-Ugly.jpg #1 - THE UGLY TRUTH
Not going to say this is a great movie or anything silly like that, but I found myself laghing my ass off most of this film and walked out entertained. Much more than I was expecting. Line of the movie: “You wanna know the secret to finding Mr. Right ladies? It’s called a stair master”. So wrong… yet so funny.
2009-Ghosts.jpg #2 - GHOSTS OF GIRLFRIENDS PAST
Not even going to say this was a “good” movie… because it wasn’t overall. However, considering how horrible it looked, gotta say it had value. Was pleasantly surprised by how it turned out

THE WORST MOVIE OF THE SUMMER

2009-lost.jpg THE LAND OF THE LOST
Worse than Year One. Worse than The Proposal. Worse than Bandslam. I swear it’s like they didn’t even try. Reconfirming yet again that Danny McBride is the most overrated actor in comedy today.

So there is my little postmortem on the summer that was 2009. Such a let down. We can only cross our collective fingers and hope for better things next summer. Hope is a wonderful thing… till it punches you in the balls.

  1. DevonRoy says:

I liked Inglorious Basterds, Away We Go, and Drag Me To Hell as well. And For as funny as everyone said The Hangover was…I thought it was boring. I think Salvation was not only one of the most disappointing movies of the summer but one of the worst.

    • Adam Chamberlain says:

      I was GUTTED with Salvation.

    • 46and2 says:

I didn’t think it was that bad. Maybe because so many panned it that I didn’t get around to watching it recently… and was only expecting to merely suffer through it.

    • AARON says:

I agree Salvation was just BLAH. This was really a majorly disappointing summer. However I think it was disappointing because of the AMAZING summer last year. I don’t know why-I still will admit I liked Transformers 2, but I will admit it did disappoint.

      • AARON says:

BTW John, with your distaste in Inglorious Basterds I was sure it’d be on this list. Nothing wrong with that though.

      • Jeremy says:

I heard so many bad reviews of Salvation, that I didn’t expect much when I paid $2 to watch it in a second run theater.

For all of the bad reviews, I actually enjoyed it. I liked some of the nods to the original movies, and Anton Yelchin was a really bright spot to it - he was practically channeling Michael Biehn in every moment he was on screen.

To each their own, of course. I love that film is so subjective. :)

      • kal07 says:

I’m with you Jeremy on this one.
I liked Salvation…I must add I’m a Terminator fanboy BUT still I thought it was a good reboot and I hope the next one turns out better than this.

What Terminator needs is a good Director and not McG, he wasn’t bad here but wasn’t good at his job either.

      • Matt Keith says:

I think the Terminator franchise needs to be “Terminated”. Like it should have been done with T2.

  2. Adam Chamberlain says:

You know it’s weird I didn’t enjoy UP because it felt so depressing. I’ve had many heated discussions about it so I know that’s a controversial thing to say. District 9 was sensational and I loved every last minute of it - although the idea of a sequel scares me a little.

  3. Matt Keith says:

    Transformers 2- 1.5 out of 5
    T4-3 out of 5

Those were the only two I cared to see.

  4. Tom says:

Not too sure if you can say Danny McBride is the most overrated actor in comedy today for his role in ‘Land of the Lost.’ Had no interest to see it, but keep in mind it was Will Ferrell’s movie with him at the helm.

McBride might not be made for movies, but ‘Eastbound and Down’ is a comic masterpiece. Check it out.

  5. James (hazmat) says:

I loved this summers movies. Thats just me though

People always end up hating the cool movies

    People hate spiderman 3
    then they hated Transformers 2
Wolverine, Terminator 4, Fantastic 4 (the first one) Daredevil, gi joe

Based on this pattern, people will hate one of these movies:
Green Lantern, Ironman 2, Batman 3, thor, captain america, Avengers

Maybe I just have a REALLY REALLY shitty taste of movies xD

    I liked Ghost Rider.

    • methos says:

Now you’re starting to sound like Stephen Sommers! ;-)

    • Dragonslayer says:

It’s okay, I liked Ghost Rider too…and Daredevil came out on Valentine’s Day 2003

    • James (hazmat) says:

      Hahahaha xD

And yeah I liked Ghost Rider a lot hehehe

      • Jake says:

It was okay. Like Louisgamers says, Cage was pretty awesome. And yet, there were many parts in which I thought the action was really mediocre.

    • Louisgamers says:

i thought the film sucked but nick cage did an alright job as ghost rider but i loved daredevil one of the most underated film’s ever.

    • Jake says:

And dude, personally, I think people hated Spiderman 3, Transformers 2, Wolverine, Terminator 4, and Fantastic Four because they sucked.

After all, audiences LOVED the Batman movies and the Iron Man film. Audiences also greatly enjoyed X-Men and X-Men 2 at the very least, and so if that same audience hated Wolverine they probably have a good reason for it.

If any of these films are well done(Green Lantern, Ironman 2, Batman 3, thor, captain america, Avengers) I’m sure people will enjoy them.

      • James (hazmat) says:

“I think people hated Spiderman 3, Transformers 2, Wolverine, Terminator 4, and Fantastic Four because they sucked.”

        Opinion.

I bought all those movies on DVD, theyre all awesome.
Like John always says: Movies are subjective

        =]

      • Harriss says:

Yeah, I agree with Jake on this one. Iron Man was THE BEST super hero movie I’ve ever seen.

      • kal07 says:

        Hey James (hazmat)

are you sure you bought T4 on DVD?

      • James (hazmat) says:

I bought daredevil, ghost rider, all the fantastic 4 movies and all the spiderman movies on DVD

When T4 and TF2 comes out on DVD they are MINE!!!!

        MINE I TELL YOU!

        =]

I even bought X-men 3 but that was a fucking mistake

  6. Chris Dillon says:

Sorry John, East Bound And South is one of the funniest shows on television. Also, he was hilarious in HotRod which is a super underrated movie, its just so ridiculous that its hilarious. FOOTFISTWAY was terrible but it had a few moments.

    • 46and2 says:

*Eastbound and Down*. And I agree. It’s only 6 episodes. I bet if John watches 1/2 of one episode he’ll change his mind about McBride… and watch the other 5 1/2. Can’t wait for the new season.

Definitely NOT the most overrated comedy today. IMO that trophy goes to Dane Cook, but that’s a whole ‘nother thread…

      • chris....the real one (also a black guy) says:

i agree with both of these comments, eastbound and down is comedy gold and danny mcbride has been great in everything ive seen him in…(didnt see land of the lost tho)

      • Chris Dillon says:

        dane cook is extremely unfunny.

  7. Keith says:

I really don’t think you appreciate comedy because Funny People really was one of the best comedies this year. Also, I disagree with Danny Mcbride being an overrated actor, yes Land of the Lost sucked, but Danny Mcbride is still a good actor. You should watch Eastbound and Down and I think you will change your opinion, great show.

  8. Algoresnuts says:

“Hope is a wonderful thing…until it punches you in the balls.”

That’s a great tagline for an anti-Obama movie.

  9. Kiddo says:

I actually liked this summer, my favorites were the same as yours but I would include Drag Me to Hell in the top 3 as I thought it was a fantastic horror movie.
Land of the Lost was definitely the WORST next to G.I Joe, but I noticed in your description of Land of the Lost you mentioned it was worse than “Bandslam” which I actually thought was a pretty decent flick, did you hate it?

  10. Chris Dillon says:

i liked the hangover but i agree with a lot of people on this, its dude wheres my car with a sudden epiphany that noone in the theater would know unless they had seen it already.

  11. Herby says:

Agree with you on UP. Best film I’ve seen so far this year. Close second for me is Inglorius Basterds.

Like you always say, film is subjective. I know you were disappointed with IB. I put it up with Kill Bill.

  12. alfie says:

eastbound and down proves mcbride is one of the absolute best comedians working today. without equal.

  13. kc says:

Up and Star Trek… fantastic. I’m was a huge fan of the new Trek (and trek in general) and have to agree that UP was better. That was the best Trek I’ve seen since First Contact… give me more!!
    Hangover… pretty good.
    Terminator was disappointing… damn.

What I disagree with you on is the Proposal. I got dragged to it and it was an OK RomCom. Wouldn’t put that in the worst category.

  14. Darren J Seeley says:

This was the summer of suck.

My top 5 of the best:

    1) Star Trek

    2) Up

    3) Public Enemies

    4) My Sister’s Keeper

    5) Wolverine

    DISAPPOINTING

    Terminator : Salvation

    NOT AS BAD

    District 9

    WORST

    What Goes Up

    ****

  15. fullmetal_medji says:

Good list. I may even have to rent Julie & Julia. However, I really enjoyed Terminator 4 & Funny People. I also thought Public Enemies was one of the best movies of the summer. To be fair Bandslam isn’t as bad as everyone says it is.

  16. Sam says:

I may not agree with every movie choice, but I see your point.

However, you have to remember that last year brought us The Dark Knight and Twilight. You can’t peak every year.

  17. Mikano94 says:

    Best movies:
    1. District 9

    • Mikano94 says:

      (Computer error)-(cont.)
      Best movies:
      1.District 9
      2.Up
      3.Star Trek
      4.Hangover
      5.Public Enemies
      Most Disappointing:
      1.Transformers 2
      2.X-Men Origins:Wolverine
      3.Terminator Salvation
Not as Bad as You Thought or Heard:
      1.Ice Age 3
      2.G.I.JOE
      Worst Movie:
1.Year One- I laughed when John said Land of the Lost was worse than this piece of dog shit.

Here’s what I expected John to include for his reasons:
Most Disappointing- Inglourious Basterds, Harry Potter
Not as Bad as You Thought or Heard-G.I.JOE

  18. Kokushi says:

John, Julie & Julia is not going to be #2 when you see The Hurt Locker but the summer of 2009 was decent but i was expecting better movies.

    • Louisgamers says:

How do you know john may hate the hurt locker or even like it more than up ? but i thought it was great yet slightly overated

  19. SlashBeast says:

I think this was one of the most disappointing, not “worst”, but disappointing YEARS of this decade. It wasn’t just the summer, but so many films this year never lived up to their potential.

    • Mikano94 says:

Seriously, this summer made summer of 07 look halfw decent, I mean think about, summer 07
      Disappointed:
      Spiderman 3
      Shrek the Third
      Pirates 3
      Fantastic 4
      After that, everything cleared up.
      Good:
      Bourne Ultimatum
      Harry Potter 5
      Simpsons Movie
      Superbad
      Ratatouille
      Live Free or Die Hard
      Knocked Up

This summer just sucked the whole way through, high hopes for summer of ‘10 (TOY STORY 3!!!!)

      • Matt Keith says:

        ….and “Iron Man 2″.

      • SlashBeast says:

True, I’d consider the summer of ‘07 and ‘09 to be probably the most disappointing of the decade.

      • Louisgamers says:

yh and then 08 was just great with Iron man and the dark knight, wall.e , wanted , hellboy 2 , topic thunder , step bros , hulk man that chould of been the best year of the decade !!!!!!!!

  20. Kamish says:

I have to agree, this is the worst top to bottom summer in recent memory…as good as it was, when District 9 is the best summer flick something is wrong…of course hollywood won’t care…they still made bank.

Hopefully the fall will even the year out with Avatar and a few other surprises…

  21. Kokushi says:

John, but Julie & Julia was 8.5 and Star Trek was 9, how is J&J #2 and ST #3?

  22. Dragonslayer says:

I think I’m the only one here that actually liked Terminator Salvation. That’s just me.

Transformers was easily for me the biggest disappointment for me too. I mean, I liked it and just because of it’s great action and visuals, I’m totally getting it on DVD, BUT THE FILM WAS SO DAMN LOOOOONNNNGGG!

    • SlashBeast says:

I actually liked Terminator Salvation despite it’s flaws.

      • Matt Keith says:

I enjoyed T4, but it sucks that the franchise is in soo much shit right now. Hell, Bale and Arnold haven’t even been paid yet. But there is word that Arnold was approached about the rights to the franchise, so maybe he could get Cameron to come back.

      • Dragonslayer says:

I have to say the reason I think I liked the third film and Salvation (which I don’t really consider a sequel)is because I’m not that big a fan of the series in general, or at least not huge. I think the movies are great, but I’m not into it as much as I am with some other things.

    • Dragonslayer says:

Yeah, the character development was AWFUL.

I’m surprised John didn’t put Harry Potter on the most disappointing. Don’t get me wrong, I loved that movie, but it wasn’t the best of the series.

      I CAN’T BELIEVE DISTRICT 9 ISN’T PLAYING AT MY THEATER!WHY?!

      • Harriss says:

I thought it was the best of the series. Which one is your favorite? Have you read the books?

  23. Kristina says:

Up was just amazing, but if you haven’t seen The Hurt Locker yet, DO IT.

    • Dragonslayer says:

I wanna see it, but it won’t play at my theater! DAMN LIMITED RELEASE!

I wonder if anyone else ever has that problem.

      • Louisgamers says:

yes at are fucking shit heap uk theater we only have 3 films on at a time !!!!! and one of then is the fucking kids club were they keep the lights on and watch alvin and the chipmunks over and over again !!!!!!!

      • Darren J Seeley says:

Yes, that *is* a problem…but in the case of Hurt Locker…I think there could be a chance, however slim, that Summit may hold off on DVD for a short time and strongly capitalize on the strong critical and worldwide audience reception…to re-release it later in the year or early next to get Oscar voters attention.

        We could hope.

But the limited release (it still made profit) last July was, in my view, a wise move. While bigger studios have more thrust with bigger budgeted films, and Summit’s main focus is all on the Twilight sequel, the studio has to plan accordingly.

Still, when one has to hunt for a picture, and find it an hour and a half drive away, it is a hinderance. Not as bad as one theatre having 6 screens devoted to GI Joe, however. That’s something else.

    • Phil Gee says:

      Just did; mesmerizing!

  24. Dryer says:

In no way was this the most disappointing; that certainly would lay at the feet of 2007 and the multitude of sequels; this summer still holds #2 slot. The problem with summer films today is the lack of originality, everything is a byproduct of something else ie toys, games, comics in hopes of creating more for the sake of famililarity. The term “blocbuster” is too loosely applied, c’mon TRANSFORMER 2, really? The term used to have a little clout behind it, now its just abused Monday morning slang for the trade papers.
Id have to agree with Ebery & AO Scott that the moviegoing public is long adventurious or engaged; they only see what they’ve already seen; lambs for the slaughter of Hollywood. How else to explain why HURTLOCKER isnt a blockbuster; a good point made repeatively is such a film back in the heydays of actual blockbusters the 80’s & ’90s this film would’ve ruled the summer of all teenage boys and the ilk; its surprising HANGOVER did so well given the current climate. Im not prudish I understand the need for cheap thrills, but there is a saturation point; unfortunately people or Hollywood fail to recognize it.

    FAVORITE SEEN SUMMER FILMS
    UP
    STARTREK
    HURTLOCKER
    PUBLIC ENEMIES
    INGLORIOUS BASTERDS
    HANGOVER

    WORST
    TERMINATOR SALVATION
    BRUNO
    TRANSFORMERS 2

  25. Black Mamba says:

2009 was a disappointing year if you went and saw all the crap films(Transformers 2, Land of the Lost, GI Joe, Terminator Salvation….). For me the summer was a good one, because the films I paid to see were for the most part good. My top five films were
1.Inglorious Basterds (the Best film I’ve seen since The Dark Knight)
    2. The Hurt Locker (Take notes Michael Bay, this is how you direct action)
    3. The Hangover (easily the funniest film of the year.)
    4. Up (PIXAR, what else do you have to say.)
    5. District 9 (The true discovery of the year.)

  26. jj says:

    The Best:
    1. Inglourious Basterds
    2. The Hurt Locker
    3. Up
    4. (500) Days of Summer
    5. The Hangover

    Most Dissapointing
    1. Public Enamies
    2. T4
    3. District 9 (above average movie, just turned to much into a typical “buddy” action movie)

    Better Than Expected
    1. Worlds Greatest Dad (watched this on demand at a buddies house and judged it simply by the poster, which made it look like a shitty Williams kid movie, like RV,but it’s actually very dark and pretty funny)
    2. Land of the Lost (advice: hit a bowl before seeing)

    Worst

    Transformers 2

  27. Trex says:

The best of the summer was Up, Star Trek, Moon, Whatever Works and District 9. You are right John… what a lousy summer it was.

    • 46and2 says:

I was wondering if someone would mention Moon.
I need to suck it up and go to the little crappy uncomfortable sticky floor theater that’s playing it in my town… before its run ends.

      • Todd W in NC says:

Same here. Moon just recently came to my area, but only to two theaters so far, with only seven screentimes between them.

Just how artsy or independent is this movie? With better marketing could it have gotten a wider release?

  28. Darek-T says:

I figured that this summer wouldn’t be as good because I think this is the year we’re supposed to feel the effects of the writer’s strike in the movie world.

  29. Brandon Daviet says:

    Here is my call,

Distric 9 sucked, needed more drama less gore. Good story poor execution.

Transformers 2 I liked ity a lot, the end did drag a bit

Wolvirine: Kicked Ass, ussually don’t like origin reinventions but this worked.

Star Trek was ok I need to see it again to really have an opinion.

Anything I left out I haven’t seen or don’t care…just like most of you feel about my opinion :)

Up was bad ass but not the best movie of summer IMO

G.I. Joe was a dissapointment but it had some charm, they shouldn’t have fucked with the origins so much. Am really excited for the sequal. Established rule (Along with FF 2) that anythin with “rise” in the title is probaly lame.

I think I agree with John about Julie and Julia want to see it, probaly DVD, but it does look really interesting.

    Public Enimies sucked long dong….boring!!

Hangover: Funny but no need for a sequal

Funny People Great cast and story but way to long for a “comedy/drama”

  30. sahil says:

    Great post John.

Here are my favorite films of Summer 2009….
    1. Star Trek
    2. Hurt Locker
    3. District 9
    4. Inglorious Basterds
    5. Julie & Julia

Top 3 films that were good but not great of Summer 2009…..
    1. Hangover
    2. Public Enemies
    3. Funny People

Top 3 Dissapointing films of Summer 2009….
    1. X-Men Origins Wolverine
    2. Terminator Salvation
    3. Taking of Pelham 123

    Worst film(s) of Summer 2009…
    1. Transformers 2 Revenge of the Fallen
    1. Halloween 2 - Just saw it tonight and it is easily one of the worst movies I have ever seen. I had to walk out about 45 minutes into it because I got a real bad headace from watching it. My friends stayed and they said that people starting booeing at the the end.

  31. Alfie says:

district 9 is so far above Wolverine in every aspect it renders all arguments for the contrary a complete joke. Wolverine was absutely Terrible. The direction, the writing, the effects, the acting all of it garbage.

Terminator follows closely. Transformers 2 was hugely disappointing. A very bad film. You can see that speilberg distance have mave much to do with this one yet his fingerprints were all over the first film.

Up is a fucking magnificent film. Hurt locker was great. D9 was great. Basterds was awesome. 500 days of summer is nice. Drag me to hell marvellous. Moon was cool for me personally I think this has been a great summer.

  32. Alfie says:

Oh and funny people and star trek. Yeah it’s been a good summer I reckon. So many (hopefully) good film to come

avatar, nine, an education, wild things are, the lovely bones

2009 by the end could have been one of the better years.

  33. sdfs says:

UP wasn’t very good at all… very strange claim but here you go,,,

  34. Todd W in NC says:

I agree with John & others that this was a bad summer for movies, one of the most disappointing ones in several years. It was so bad that there were only nine movies that I actually bothered seeing, and two of those I went into expecting them to be bad.

About the only one left that I actually want to catch up on is (500) Days of Summer. I don’t even know if that one counts as a summer movie since it’s been in limited release for a while. It just didn’t make it to my area until recently.

    Here’s my list so far:

    1. (A) Star Trek
    2. (A-) Up
    3. (B+) Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
    4. (B+) The Time Traveler’s Wife
    5. (B-) Terminator Salvation
    6. (B-) X-Men Origins: Wolverine
    7. (C+) District 9
    8. (C+) G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra
    9. (D-) Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

One redeeming quality of the summer is that HBP was the first Harry Potter movie I actually felt tempted to go see, despite how much the first movie bugged me. I ended my Harry Potter boycott and caught up on the middle four movies just in time to see HBP. I was surprised to find that I kind of liked Prisoner of Azkaban and Order of the Phoenix and that Goblet of Fire is okay too.

Hm.. I thought HBP was the best of the Harry Potter Movies for sure. I love the books, as I grew up reading them. You should read them, much better then the movies.

I would hardly call it “The Summer of Suck”

Sure, people will remember 2008 for The Dark Knight and Wall-E and overall it was probably a better film summer than this year however that does not mean 2009 was that bad.

    • Todd W in NC says:

Yes, but 2008 also had Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Narnia: Prince Caspian, and Hellboy 2, which were all pretty good.

It seems like there were fewer bombs last year. And, while Transformers 2 made huge money this year, it met with low critical reception and very mixed fan reception. I don’t remember any hits from last year being as divisive.

Last year, people wanted Dark Knight and Wall-E nominated for Oscars, and even Iron Man made it into year-end top 10 lists of a few professional critics. The only two standouts this summer were Star Trek and Up. Almost everything else was forgettable.

Maybe that’s why 2009 seems so bad. After a stellar summer 2008, 2009 had nowhere to go but down.

      • Mikano94 says:

The funny thing is he entitled it the “Summer of Suck” and put a picture of District 9 as the headline.

  36. Aaron says:

Transformers was disappointing, but it was also pretty freakin’ bad as well… It should be in the worst of the summer. I think Wolverine also deserves a place on the disappointing list…

    • Todd W in NC says:

I agree that Wolverine was not that great, but I’d count it in the Not As Bad As People Say category. It may help that my expectations were lower than most people’s.

The beginning and end are obligatory action nonsense, but I vaguely remember enjoying the middle of the movie quite a bit.

Two of the people I saw it with thought the FX were horrible. They may not have been stellar, but nothing stood out as below average to me.

  37. JAlexM says:

The best 5 flicks of this summer for me were:

    -Inglorious Basterds
    -District 9
    -Public Enemies
    -The Hangover
    -Moon

  38. Tiglet says:

haha damn our tastes are so different.

I actually liked land of the lost. Didn’t think it was nearly as bad you say it was. Probably because I’m a huge will ferrel fan. I love almost all of his movies because I love his typ of dumbass humour. Especially stepbrothers. Damn that was a great movie!!

I agree on terminator for sure. Didn’t feel epic at all. Maybe because I prefer destruction of stuff in this era like with the other terminator films. That’s why I loved nr3 where Arnie was hanging from that firetruck and he flew trough all those buildings.

I disagree on the hangover though, the movie was okay but I didn’t have any actual laugh out load moments exept for the last scenes with that candy shop song.

Some of the movies I cant judge yet, I have to see Star trek, up, district 9 and some others for myself yet, but I think those will be great from the trailers I’ve seen for sure.

  39. Alex says:

    “Worse than Bandslam.”

    $ =/= a good movie

Just because it tanked dosent mean it was bad, it was still a success among critics becoming certified fresh on RT with a strong 80%, waaaaaaaaaaaaaay more than any of the transformers movies!

  40. melbye says:

If i am going to give the movies i have seen this summer a score:

    • Mikano94 says:

  41. David Lopan says:

    Funny People was awesome.

  42. Rachel says:

Um, G.I. Joe: the Rise of Cobra all the way, man. Best movie of the summer. Hands Down. I think between that and Shorts, my life is complete.

This totally was the Summer of Suck.

  43. Lily says:

Well, being in Australia, half of your summer won’t be over here for another couple of months!

I only have a small list of movies that impressed/disappointed me. Movie going time is unfortunately limited:

    Impressed With:
Vicky Christina Barcelona (don’t look at me weird: Oscar season movies come here late!)
    Coraline
    Drag Me To Hell

    Disappointed By:
    Wolverine
    Termiator Salvation

Both had things in it I liked that where overbalanced by things that made them absolutely suck.

  44. theRZA says:

Think your a little harsh on Danny Mcbride.
Three words -> Eastbound and Down

  45. Grave says:

Personally I say all the big time movies i.e. Terminator, X-men Origins, Transormers 2, Harry Potter, G.I. Joe were dissappointing. I give the award to Transformers 2 thou, no excuess for same shitty points from the original film returning in the sequel and making it worse.

  46. tzaylor says:

Wow I’m surprised at how many people ended up hating this summer of movies….I’m just wondering…what did you all expect?

It seems like you all had set impossible expectations to have your hearts broken like this. I admit it is more fun to complain than to compliment but wow…

The only disappointment was transformers II. And even then it wasn’t that much of a surprise, just sad.

I enjoyed the rest of the summers flicks.

  47. Tiara says:

    District 9 was garbage!

  48. alfie says:

just saw final destination 3d so you can add that to the list as well..

seriously i still don;t see how this summer was any worse than most others….in fact I rate this one quite highly.

  49. thematticus says:

    best
    1-District 9
    2-The Hurt Locker
    3-Inglorious Basterds
    4-Up

Star Trek was INCREDIBLY overrated, felt like I was watching a CW show with a bigger budget and retarded plot. Sorry to disagree withyou, but as much as I enjoyed UP, it too is overrated. It was good, but I feel a lot of people give it more credit than it is due because it is a Pixar film. I thought Wall-E trounced it in every way. The little kid was the first Pixar character I was genuinely annoyed at seeing. It was still good, which is why I have it on my list, but not a masterpiece.

  50. King is a Fink says:

I love movies but wasn’t inspired to brave the AC to see too many this summer. Saved myself for District 9 and Inglourious Basterds and loved loved loved them.

Looking forward to spending time in the dark with popcorn this fall…

  51. Chris-movieplace.blogspot says:

IMO “Inglourious Basterds” will become a classic. I think you underrated it.
