Natalie Portman Joins Thor

By John - July 13, 2009 - 10:55 America/Montreal

It seemed like we waited forever to get any news whatsoever about the upcoming Thor movie, but in recent days it feels like new announcements are being made by the minute… and this next one is pretty big.

Marvel studios has announced that Natalie Portman has joined the Thor project and will be playing Jane Foster, a nurse who becomes Thor’s first love.

Ok, I’m thrilled that Portman is on the film, I think she’s just top notch in every way… but I’ve been dreading hearing that the lead female actress (whoever it ended up being) would be primarily a “love interest”.

Do we really ned to see to see Thor second guessing his heroic ways for the sake of a relationship??? Man I hate love stories in my action movies.

Still… if it had to be anyone I’m more than glad it’s Portman. What do you guys think of this pairing up of Daddy Kirk with the Queen of Naboo?

Good pick. I agree she may be his weakness when Loki tries to take over the earth.

  2. methos says:

awesome. Always good to see Portman on screen.

  3. DirkAnger23 says:

I’m right there with ya about being sick of the whole love story angle in my action movies. I love Portman but would have been more jazzed if they had cast Sif instead of some generic sounding human nurse.

  4. Brendan says:

Kewl- I think she’s a good actress for the most part when her parts are written well. I would, however, remove all scenes with her from the star wars prequels- but that wasn’t her fault.

Looking forward to seeing her sharing the screen with the god of thunder.

  5. Chris K says:

Good choice, like everyone else I hope that a love story doesn’t distract from the rest of the film, but she is a welcome presence, and always so easy on the eyes.

  6. riggs says:

she wouldnt be thor’s love interest she would be donald blakes love interest no?

    • HAZMAT says:

Theyre not doing that in this movie. Donald Blake and Thor are like…the same person.

    • iknewthiswouldhappen says:

Donald Blake is the human vessel that Thor is forced to inhabit, but that is not happening in this movie. He’s just Thor, no alter ego.

  7. Phil Gee says:

I’m fine with it because the Thor I know is the one with Donald Blake and Jane Foster but I thought this movie was set in Viking times and all about fighting gods and titans and stuff.

  8. HAZMAT says:

“Do we really ned to see to see Thor second guessing his heroic ways for the sake of a relationship??? Man I hate love stories in my action movies.”

Id have to disagree there John, and Thor never second guesses his heroic ways, hes a God, he never thinks about changing for his lover like Spiderman, he wants HER to come to Asgard.
She was never a major character, she appears briefly and Thor breaks up with her and Odin sends her away from Asgard

And thats cool that you dont like romance in your action movies, especially Thor, he was never the romantic type…so i dont think you have anything to worry about here, unless they turn him into Romeo in this movie.

I personally think that a movie cannot be perfect without romance. Or “10/10″ or “4 stars”

    • Brandon says:

Or “Fabio” god forbid…they have been trying to court the female demographic more and more latley….

  9. Rocket says:

she is gonna be TINY next to mighty thor

her vageen will hang like sleeve of wizard

  10. War-Journalist says:

    1. @ Rocket: What?!
    2. I’m glad they got a decent actress for the movie.
    3. I was under the impression the majority of this would take place in Asgard, so wtf?
    4. There will be no problem with romance. Thor’s a god, not a teenager. He won’t bend for the girl like Spider-Man.
    5. I agree with HAZMAT for once. Many (not ALL) good action movies need a romantic interest at the least. Otherwise, Thor (at least early in his career) wouldn’t give two shits about Earth.

    • HAZMAT says:

3- Yes, i was also told that Donald Blake would be obsolete in this movie, apparently not.
Of course he has to be in this movie, they have to somehow tie this up with the real world Ironman lives in.

Ive always said that Master and Comander would have been an absolutely PERFECT 10 out of 10 if it werent such a sausage fest of a film.

  11. Thos says:

’Cross the Rainbow Bridge of Asgard,
    Where the booming heavens roar,
    You’ll behold in breathless wonder,
The God of Thunder, Mighty Thor!

  12. EZELL says:

she sure is cute and will keep her good looks for a long time. Yea I Sure had a thing for her in Middle School when Episode 2 came out man was she hot. LOL anyways yea she can act too. She sure plays the love interest a hell of lot.

  13. Kristina says:

She is very overrated. She was great in The Professional and not much else.

    Star Wars-nope

    Anywhere But Here-nope

    Where The Heart Is-nope

V For Vendetta- any actress could duplicate or better that performance

    Mr Magorium’s Wonder Emporium-nope

Closer-I don’t see the big deal with this performance. Whenever I bring up the Portman argument, everyone uses this and The Professional to defend her, but she wasn’t astounding here.

Now, I did LOVE her in The Other Boleyn Girl, but overall, I don’t get the hype around her. She’s a lovely, classy woman, but as an actress, she doesn’t do it for me.

    • EZELL says:

You don’t like sex symbols do you? Did you ever see Garden State?

That was grate and she was grate.

    • bigsampson says:

      great*

    • Kristina says:

I have no problem with women who are sex symbols, but don’t try to convince me that they are better actresses than they really are.

I did see Garden State and didn’t like it or her in it.

    • HAZMAT says:

She almost made me cry in V for Vendetta when she read the lesbian letter.

Or maybe she did. Youll never know.

I thought she was really good in V.

    • Dragonslayer says:

“Anyone could duplicate or better that performance”?! Are you kidding me? She was amazing in V for Vendetta! She also got really hot when they got rid of her hair.

But yes, she is bad in Star Wars.

    • Kristina says:

V For Vendetta is great, but NOT because of her performance, Dragonslayer. She cries a lot with a shitty accent. Whoopdy-doo!

    • chris...the real one (also a black guy) says:

i do agree with some parts, she was at her best in the professional, but i liked her in V and she was gold in garden state

    • Dragonslayer says:

Kristina, I didn’t say V for Vendetta was great because of her. I thought she was great, but she wasn’t the best thing about the film

    • EZELL says:

      jealousy

    • HAZMAT says:

Please dont pull the jealousy card, i freaking hate that.
I dont like Keannu Reeves and im not jealous

I want to feel safe about criticizing people without having someone say “youre just jealous!”

    • Kristina says:

Ezell, I hate to break this to you, but criticizing her acting ability does not make me jealous of her in any way. Are you jealous of actors or directors that you criticize?

    • EZELL says:

Yea I don’t acre much for him he was good in two role Neo and that FBI agent in Speed yea maybe Devils Advocate.

And I am not criticizing you Kristina I am a hypocrite I use to have a problem with Brad Pitt and then I got over it and now respect him.

  14. Ken says:

*sigh* I completely understand where you’re coming from john.I’m sick of love stories in action movies as well.for as Portman,i like her,but honestly wish there was no love interest.

  15. bigsampson says:

its cause women sometimes are a key demographic and adding her in it swoons more females do to something the can or want to relate too.

  16. Brandon says:

Thats stong…wise choice…I think this may be one of the biggest challenges Marvel has in terms of adaptions but so far I’m stoked

  17. Phil Gee says:

It’s just occured to me that maybe, just maybe, she’s only going to show up in an easter egg scene during the end credits to tease the second film, just like Sam Jackson in Iron Man.

    Just saying it’s not impossible.

    • Brandon says:

That is a big paycheck for a “short” scene but so was Jackson’s fury charachter…although I think he may be enough of a geek he did it cheap

  18. leeloo says:

    awesometh.
i was hoping she was gonna be lady sif tho.
    soeth amped for this.

  19. Brandon says:

I could have sworn that Portman said she didn’t like these typ of movies but she was offered tham a lot because of Star Wars. I could be tottaly wrong maybe she said she just didn’t like the Star Wars films…anyone remember anything like that.

Either way I’m glad shes doing it she was great in Vendetta and sexay as hell and one of the best parts of the newer/older SW films.

I am really confused about her role though since there was not supposed to be an alter ego, but that is also the Thor I know, and a better story IMO, so bring it on

  20. Jeremy K. says:

    “Man I hate love stories
    in my action movies.”

The movie is being helm’d by Kenneth “Fucking Shakespeare” Branagh! I really hope this means that Thor will be more than just an “action movie”. If anybody should know how to work a relationship into the story properly its Branagh!

  21. Roman727 says:

I love NP she was great in the professional and in beautiful girls, also Garden State.

Closer was a good movie and she broke a wall there from always playing a wholesome girl to playing a stripper with a very revealing scene with clive owen. She can do whatever she wants and if you want the wholesome counter part to the powerful Biel who will play Sif (hopefully) then you have a man torn between his Godhood and humanity. I think this will create a powerful narrative of a torn man who must always carry the weight of two worlds on his back.

  22. Thos says:

I would have prefered a real British actress in V.

  23. tzaylor says:

She’s gonna be great. Love is not the problem in action movies. I can’t honestly think all you want in an action movie is action the entire time. So take out the love story! While your at it let’s take out the comic relief, that’s not action either! Oh, remove the dialogue and anything that’s not a splosion.
